Dean sat on the back porch with Sam having a beer. “Liam’s been a little weird since our last job, even for him,” Dean commented. “What do you suppose is up with him?”
“He doesn’t think you trust him,” Sam answered.
“What? That’s crazy. Of course I trust him. He wouldn’t be hunting with us if I didn’t.”
“You didn’t hear this from me, but you not wanting to do a job with just him, it upset him. Made him think you don’t trust him to have your back.”
“He told you this?”
“Yeah, and I can’t disagree with him. You never send him to do anything alone, you keep him leashed to you.”
“Maybe that’s because I want to keep an eye on him. He’s competent, I know that, but you’ve seen for yourself how injury prone he is.”
“Yeah, I saw him get stabbed, but instead of just falling over like most people he dumped salt and finished the incantation before falling over. He’s tough, and knows the job, maybe even better than we do. I think you should consider doing a job just you and him. It would make him happy, you could see how he performs under pressure, and I would get more family time.”
Dean nodded. “I’ll think about it. It really wasn’t a slight against him, it’s just, you and me...”
“I know,” Sam patted him on the shoulder. “But things do change. We both have significant others and I have a kid. It’s crazy, but it’s really happening.”
“Sam! Dean!” they heard Natalie shout.
They ran into the kitchen and saw her kneeling over Liam’s unconscious body. He had been making a sandwich and had just fallen over. “What happened?” Dean asked.
“I don’t know,” Natalie shook her head. “I was reading to John and I saw a bright light and the house shook a little. Then he just fell.”
“It’s happened,” Castiel appeared in the kitchen. “They’ve taken him.”
“Raphael?” Dean looked up to the angel.
“Yes. He is winning, and Astiratu has been carted off to his cage in hell.”
“His body is still alive, so go get him back!” Dean shouted.
“I wish I could, but I can’t,” Castiel frowned. “He’s locked up tight.”
Dean sat there on the floor with his head in his hands. “No, just no. I do not accept this. I….” Dean got up and headed to grab his keys and jacket.
“Where are you going?” Sam asked.
“Probably to do something stupid.”
Dean found his way to an old doctor friend of his dad’s. “You’ve done this a lot?” he asked before handing over a wad of cash and getting on the table.
“Oh, yeah, lots of times!” the doctor assured him.
“And your success rate?”
“About seventy five percent.”
“Let’s do this then,” Dean said before he got comfortable.
An IV was placed in his arm and a drug injected into his vein. Less than a minute later he was dead and standing in the Asian grocery store below the office. “This better work,” he sighed before chanting the incantation.
“Hello, Dean,” Death stood before him. “To what do I owe the uh, this encounter?”
Dean swallowed. “I have something of yours.”
“You mean my ring? I recall loaning you that temporarily.”
“Well, if you want it back...”
“I'm sorry, you assume that I don't know where you've hidden it. Now we've established you have hubris but no leverage, what is it you want?”
“Astiratu has been caged in hell. I need him back, and I need to be sure they can’t just take him again. I figure you’re about the only one with the juice to do that.”
“You would be right about that. Astiratu, I don’t know… He’s tried to kill me, more than once.”
“Yeah, but killing horseman, that’s his job. It’s not like he gets any jollies from it. And he hasn’t been able to kill you, so...”
“I suppose. He’s actually quite likable if you get him to let his guard down. It’s only happened twice, but...”
“So you’ll do it?”
“If you’ll do something for me. Now, when you fetch my ring, put it on. I want you to be me for one day.”
“Are you serious?”
“No, I'm being incredibly sarcastic. Take the ring off before the twenty four hours are up, and you lose. No Astiratu. Clear?”
“Okay. Yes. But why?”
“Simple, Dean. Because-”
Dean’s eyes opened and he was back with the doctor. Dean called Sam to tell him everything. “I just gotta be Death for twenty four hours and we get him back.”
“Are you crazy?” Sam asked.
“Sammy, it’s the best shot we got. I’d do the same for you. Now, I’m off to Bobby’s to get the ring. You just take care of the body for twenty four hours, okay?”
“Yeah, Natalie has a doctor here that’s hooking him up to fluids and stuff. Just… good luck I guess.”
Sam watched over Liam the rest of the day. Dean returned in the early morning hours. “I failed,” he looked like he was about to cry.
“So, what do we do now?” Sam asked, looking at Liam.
“We keep digging,” Dean looked determined.
“Dean, we can’’t just keep a live body here hooked up to machines for months on end.”
Dean’s eyes narrowed. “So, you just want to kill him and be done with it? I can’t do that, Sam!”
Sam shook his head. “It’s not like I want to either, but right now it’s just a body. He’s not there, he’s, well...”
Dean swallowed hard. “Sam, just give me a few days, okay? Maybe a week. If I can’t find anything in a week, we’ll revisit the conversation.”
When Dean went downstairs Death was sitting at the kitchen table. “Dean. Join me. Brought you one from a little stand in Los Angeles known for their bacon dogs. Sit,” he handed Dean a hot dog.
Dean took a seat. “Boy, what's with you and cheap food?”
“I could ask you the same thing. Thought I'd have a treat before I put the ring back on. Heavier than it looks, isn't it? Sometimes, you just want the thing off. But you know that. Not hungry?”
Look... I think you know that I flunked. So there. Oh, and by the way, I, uh, I sucked at being you. Really screwed up the whole natural order thing. But I'm sure you knew about that, too.”
“So, if you could go back, would you simply kill the little girl? No fuss, no stomping your feet?”
“Knowing what I know now, yeah.”
“Today, you got a hard look behind the curtain. Wrecking the natural order's not quite such fun when you have to mop up the mess, is it? This is hard for you, Dean. You throw away your life because you've come to assume that it'll bounce right back into your lap. But the human soul is not a rubber ball. It's vulnerable, impermanent, but stronger than you know. And more valuable than you can imagine. So... I think you've learned something today.”
“Want to know what I think? I think you knew that I wouldn't last a day.”
“I have no idea what you're talking about.”
“I lost. Fine. But at least have the balls to admit that it was rigged from the jump.”
“Most people speak to me with more respect. Especially when I have something they desperately want,” he motioned to a little black bag.
“Wait, you mean you did get him?”
“Weren’t you there for our first conversation? He was only doing his job in trying to kill me, and he’s actually quite likable once you get under the shell. He serves a purpose, and I don’t happen to like what Raphael did. It was cowardly.”
“So, you were always going to do it, you just wanted to teach me a lesson first?”
“Precisely. Now, let’s get him back where he belongs, shall we?” Dean nodded nodded and followed Death up the stairs to the bedroom. “Life is a funny thing, isn’t it,” Death commented while looking down at Liam’s body. “So fragile, and yet, at the same time, so resilient.”
“Please just put him back in the body,” Dean begged.
Death sighed and reached into his bag to pull out an aqua blue light. He released it and it flew on its own back into the body. “There.”
“He isn’t waking up,” Dean looked concerned.
“He’s just been tortured in hell. Give him a minute,” Death disappeared.
Dean sat there for about five minutes before Liam opened his eyes and looked around. “How long this time?” he asked weakly.
“Just a day,” Dean stroked his hair. “And welcome back. I missed you. Do you um, remember anything?”
Liam looked up at him. “Do I ever?”
Dean smiled softly and kissed his forehead. “Let’s get you unhooked, okay? You hungry?”
Liam nodded. “Starving.”
Dean nodded. “We’ll see about getting you some food.”
“You’re not going to tell me what happened or why I’m hooked up to an IV are you?”
“No. I know it frustrates you, but it’s better you live in your happy little world of not knowing a damn thing. I was doing some thinking though. You said you wanted to work a case, just you and me?”
“Yeah, but you were against that.”
“But I changed my mind,” he said as he pulled some leftovers out of the fridge and started making Liam a plate. “You find one, and I’ll go with just you.”
“Really?” Liam looked a little happier. “Okay then. If you’re sure.”
“I am,” Dean said as he pulled a steaming plate out of the microwave and set it in front of Liam. “I’ve been thinking about it since you mentioned it. I know, I’m dependent on my brother, but I’d say it’s about time.”
Liam smiled and ate. Dean sat up with him and watched some TV before they went to bed. Liam was up before him and on his laptop while munching a waffle. “Wow, you’re taking the whole case thing seriously,” Dean commented when he got up.
“Yeah, and I think I found one. Bloomfield, Kentucky either has a cannibal or a rugaru.”
“Okay, let me eat please. I haven’t eaten since breakfast yesterday, so…”
Liam went to pack and Dean sat at the table. “You’re making his day,” Sam said to him. “He woke up in a very good mood. This is a good thing.”
Dean shrugged and took a bite of waffle. “It makes me nervous. Not because I don’t have faith in him, but because I think you and me, we are a little co dependent. I mean, it was just us growing up and we had to look out for each other. I’m not used to not having you.”
Sam shrugged. “You’ll be fine. He is very capable and smart. He loves you. You’ll kick its ass.”
Dean nodded and finished eating before packing up to go. They said their goodbyes and got in the car. “The passenger seat is nice,” Liam settled in. “Much better up here than the backseat.”
“Glad you like it,” Dean gave him a little smile and pulled out onto the road.
They returned three days later. “Success?” Sam asked as they came in the door.
“Oh, yeah,” Dean smiled at him. “He was all over this case. Damn good hunter when his head in the game. Almost too good. I had to make him stop for food and rest, but yeah, we got the sucker.”
Liam came in and kissed Dean passionately. “I knew we’d make a good team.”
