Chance wrote a few more lines of his daily log and sighed out of boredom. He looked over to the outer cage door and stood up, grabbing the keys from his desk drawer and making his way over to the door. Reaching inside and unlocking the outer cage, he opened the door and stepped inside and made his way around the corner to look at the most recent prisoner. He sat down on the edge of the table and stared hard at Vin Tanner, who leant against the bars, his arms resting on the support bars. "Took long enough to find ya, although you really didn't hide yerself very well. Hidin' out in the territories?"
"I needed a job, and it was a good a place as any." Vin cocked his head to the side and stared back at his jailer with the same cool stare he was given. "Why is it you wanted me here instead of goin straight to the noose?"
Chance shifted. "No reason. I just wanted to see the man I've been hearin' so much about. I figured you and your friend, the judge, might have time to compare notes and find the best defense." He shrugged and watched how his statement registered on Vin's face.
Vin scoffed and shook his head. "Fat chance of that happenin'; Eli Joe's dead. The people of Tascosa ain't too fond of seein' me, no matter the truth."
Nodding and looking away for a moment to glance back at the outer office, Chance turned back to look at the young man, standing calmly at the bars, as if waiting for the hanging party procession to start. "No witnesses?"
"Nope."
Again, Chance shifted and stood up, stepping closer to the man. "Well, as it happens, I may know of one. The question is, would you accept their help or not?" A small smile came to his lips as Vin only stared at him with a questionable glare.
Vin pushed back, off of the bars but keeping his eyes focused on Chance. "You knew Eli Joe?"
"Eli Joe? No. Just so happens I knew the man that was killed. He was a good, hard-working man that didn't deserve to be killed. But, that isn't the reason I wanted you in my jail. I know a lot more than what the handbill says about Vincent Tanner than you think. I know about your mother and how you got to Tascosa. Even met yer pa, down the road but we'll talk about that later." Chance paused as the shock of familiarity had become present on Vin's face. He heard the door to the office open and close and the sound of footsteps stepping into the room. Dude called to him. "In any case, welcome back to Texas." He turned and made his way out to the outer office to greet the two men standing in the middle of the room. "Dude, thought you were asleep?"
Dude absently stroked the front of his shirt before nodding over to the older gentleman who stood beside him. "On my way, just wanted to bring the judge over to talk to his client. Chance, Judge Travis from the territories." He waited for both men to nod to one another in greeting before he continued and turned to the door. "Now, if you don't mind, I'm gonna get somethin' to eat and some shut eye. Judge." He nodded as he turned away and made his exit, not waiting for Chance to ask any more of him.

Buck stood at the bar of the Burdett Saloon that was under new management, now that Nathan and Joe were no longer owners. He sighed and anticipated the taste of the forthcoming cool beer the bartendre was serving to other patrons, there before him. He smiled as Charlie stepped over to him and waited for him to announce his order but was halted as Colorado made his way over to stand beside him and place a tall mug of beer down in front of him.
Waving Charlie away, Colorado took a sip of his own beer and set the glass back down onto the bar before he spoke. "Just curious again." Colorado stared at the bottles on the back countre, in front of the mirror. He had removed his hat and placed it on the countre to his right, as Buck stood on his left. The silence between them lasted well into three minutes but he was patient.
"Well, that's a natural happenin'." Buck picked up his glass and sipped at the cool amber liquid.
Colorado sipped at his drink and let the liquid mill around in his mouth before swallowing it. He gave Buck a sideways glance but said nothing to the acknowledgement of the retort. "Well, you all didn't see it happen, the murder, I mean, so how do you intend on proving him innocent?" He removed his tobacco pouch and papers and started to roll his own smoke before patting himself down for a match and finding a shot glass full of them, on the countre in front of them. Striking the match, he lit his cigarette and looked over to Buck, who shrugged and took a drink of his own beer.
Buck didn't answer but instead asked his own question. "I was just sittin' here wonderin', why does this sheriff wanna see him, if Vin doesn't even know the man?" Tossing his own glance over his shoulder to the younger deputy, Buck watched Colorado nod and take another drag of his cigarette.
Shrugging and exhaling the smoke, Colorado shook his head. "Not really my business to know. Around the time we were to take Devil Jim to Yuma, your friend's handbill came across his desk and he jumped up to catch us before we left. You think he's innocent?"
"We're all guilty of somethin', but that's the pieces I'm gettin' from him." Buck exhaled and took the last gulp of beer before setting the glass down on the bar and calling Charlie back over for a refill. Besides, I could ask the same of you and Jesse. You think he'd kill his pa?"
Colorado paused in thought. He nodded as Charlie silently offered him another beer and then waited for the man to give him a fresh glass of the liquid and walk away, before answering. "I didn't think of it that way. The sheriff could be a hard man, sometimes, but Jesse has his tempers too." He finished his first beer and nudged the glass away before reaching for the second glass. "What'll you do if he's found guilty?"
Buck smirked. "You sure are curious, I'll give you that."
Colorado shared the smirk.
"Tell me somethin'. You keepin' all the women here, too?" Dropping the smile and running his tongue over his top front teeth, Buck turned away from the bar, on the stool and noticed a few townsladies passing by, in front of the old Burdett Saloon.
Colorado's brow furrowed as he took another drink and waited before swallowing. He swallowed and cleared his throat before turning around to follow Buck's line of sight. "I don't follow you."
Buck leant back onto the bar with his left elbow and looked over at the younger man. "Back in the territories, you left three women in your wake. How many you got lyin' at yer feet, here? Smooth young man such as yerself must have some kinda followin', huh?"
Colorado chuckled. "I got a gal in Denvertown."
"That's a long way from Rio Bravo, son."
"Yea. But, it keeps me goin'."

Jesse sat on the floor, next to the bed. His right arm curled beside his sleeping wife, on the mattress while his head lie on his arm. He dozed off and on for a few hours while Lyla slept, with the help of some herbal tea Nathan had given her. He snored softly, not loud enough to wake his ailing wife, but he hadn't admitted even to himself that he was exhausted from the whole ordeal. With another inhale, he felt the light weight of a knit blanket being draped over his curled legs and opened his eyes to find Maude standing over him.
Maude clasped her hands together and blinked as she stared down at him. "Why not crawl into bed with your wife?"
Shaking her his head, Jesse glanced over at Lyla's sleeping face and whispered, "I don't wanna wake her." Looking back up at the woman, his brow furrowed. "I thought you left with Mr. Jackson."
Crouching down to his level and lowering her voice, Maude smiled over at the woman on the bed. "You might need a mother's help." She looked back at him and could see the worry on his face. "Why don't we get some air?" With a tilt of her head, she waved him outside and offered him a chance to stretch from his cramped position on the floor. She stood and stepped back as he accepted and carefully, quietly stood up and followed her outside.
Night had set long ago, leaving the stars and nearly full moon to shine down on them as they sat on the porch bench. Both sat there quietly and listened to the crickets and the night sounds. "I never knew Lyla's ma. Her pa smothered her, just like her no-good brother. My own ma,... she left and never looked back. Can't say I blame her. As much as I don't want to upset Lyla, right now, I could really use my mama here." Jesse stared out at the patches of grass that blew gently in the soft breeze of the night. He hadn't really known Maude for long and she wasn't exactly the kind of lady to get terribly emotional in these kinds of situations, from what he could tell, but something in the way he spoke had given his benchmate a softness as they sat there together.
"I guess I was never really what some might call a mother, to Ezra. A lot of times, he had to find his own way and a lot of times he was just as lost as you are. Mothers always care for their children, no matter what." Maude inhaled and let it out slowly as she turned her head to look at him. "Why not write to your mama, tell her how much you love her, and ask her to come meet her grandchild." She sat stiff, like a proper lady and only relaxed as Jesse shrugged, swallowed and finally nodded in agreement. "I don't know what to say."
Maude's heart skipped a beat and her breath caught. "Just tell her you love her and that you want her near, with your family. No mama in the world can resist that." She reached over and patted his knee, a baby softly crying from the bedroom grabbed their attention. "You'll be a great daddy to that little baby. Just you wait."
