“Why do you keep arguing with me?” Liam grumbled as he entered the kitchen where Sam was having breakfast.
“Because it’s crazy, okay!” Dean followed him. “And it’s not going to happen. How many times do I have to say that this is a horrible idea?”
“And you have a better one?” Liam shot him a glare.
“Not yet.” Dean poured himself a glass of orange juice. “But how do you know these dreams just aren't night terrors about all the crap coming to the surface? Why and how would Lucifer reach out to you?”
Liam let out an exasperated sigh. “I don't know, but it's not like every dream is exactly the same. Last night he talked about joining forces. Then he tried to corner and kiss me. I punched him.” The blond showed his husband his bruised knuckles. “Looks and feels real enough to me. Sam, help me out.”
Sam took a moment to choose his words. “Dean, doesn’t it make sense? I mean, Lucifer would know how God ended the Darkness. He was there.”
“You too?” Dean was upset.
“I'm sorry, I have to agree with Liam, the timing is a little... I mean, I doubt his intentions are pure, but shouldn't we turn over every stone we can?”
“And how exactly are we going to get to him?” Dean asked. “Lucifer is the biggest monster ever hatched.”
“He was, until I let loose a bigger one to save you. Obviously we have to go to Crowley, since he is the King of Hell.”
“Because we can really trust him,” Dean's tone was sarcastic.
“Hey, this affects him too,” Liam pointed out. “Amara is a threat to everyone and everything. He tried to get her on his side, but that didn't exactly work out from what you told me.”
“Alright, fine,” Dean gave in. “We'll go meet with Crowley. But we're gonna be careful about this.”
They met with Crowley later that night under a bridge. When they told him everything he seemed surprised. “I’d say you’re making this up but I never think of you as imaginative.”
“We’re not saying it’s going to happen. We just want to know if it's possible,” Dean said.
“The cage is a can of worms you do not want to open. I believe this conversation is over.” Crowley moved to snap his fingers and disappear.
“Is it?” Dean said quickly. “Crowley, you know that the Darkness is going to pound on everything, and that includes you.”
“And you had a shot at taking her out when she was with you, but apparently you thought that sucking up was the way to go,” Sam added.
“And that didn’t work out so well,” Dean pointed out.
Crowley looked Dean in the eye. “Because she chose you. And you couldn’t control your girlfriend. What happened in that room? Why did she insist on sparing you? What is she to you?”
Dean didn't say anything for a moment. “Wanna know what she is, Crowley? How about God’s sister!”
“God’s sister? He has relatives? I had that kind of leverage under my thumb and I let it slip away.”
“Can we focus on the big picture here okay? Can Liam meet with Lucifer or not?”
Crowley thought about it a moment. “There may be a way. Clearly, if your special friend enters the cage he’s gone. And yes, it’s on my bucket list, now is not the time to be selfish. Need a secure site, a way to neutralize Lucifer’s powers.”
“In hell I take it,” Liam crossed his arms while he listened.
“Yes, in hell. So we have a modicum of control. You think I want that abomination running a muck upstairs?”
“Is it possible to control the situation because if Liam is not safe it’s not happening,” Dean insisted.
“Goodness mummy, loosen the grip. Theoretically it’s possible, with challenges. I can arrange for transit into hell. Opening the cage, that’s another matter.”
“You’re the king of the joint. Don’t you have a key?”
“It was sealed by God himself. Of course I don’t have a key. The mechanisms of divine manufacturer, I believe its secrets, along with the spells for warding Liam were recorded where many such mysteries are found; the Book of the Damned.”
“That your witch of a mother has. Super,” Liam sighed. “Not to mention only she can read it.”
“Just leave that little detail to me,” Crowley said before he disappeared.
Crowley was seated on his throne when two demons dragged Rowena in. “Mother. Good of you to stop by.”
“Unhand me you goons,” Rowena tried to push the demons away, and Crowley motioned for them to leave. “So, Fergus. Think you’ve won? Lay a hand on me and my followers will swoop down on this tin can palace of yours with all the power of the Book of the Damned.”
“Stow it, you lying bitch. If you could do that, you’d have done it. If I wanted to kill you, I’d have done that.”
“Not that you haven’t tried.”
“You tried to kill me twice.”
“What is it they say? Third time’s the charm.”
“And I thought my family was screwed up,” Liam commented as he came through the door with Sam and Dean behind him.
Rowena was taken aback. “Oh, you’re not handing me over to them. It’s beneath even you. They’re your enemies as well.”
Dean stepped forward. “Alright Rowena. We get it. We're all enemies, okay. But right now we’ve got bigger fish to fry. Then we can go back to killing each other.”
“Ah, the chicken’s come home to roost. This ghastly force set free when the mark was removed.”
“So you know?” Sam asked.
“I’ve heard whispers. As bad as they say?”
“Well, let’s just say that everyone in this room might hold a piece of the puzzle to corking it back up,” Dean said.
“Oh, really, and what happens to me once the danger is past? How do I know that I can trust any of you? Especially him,” the witch pointed to Rowena. “He's already tried to kill me once.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “A love tap.”
“That doesn't help your cause. I don't know what you are, but...”
“I know what he is,” Dean spoke up. “And as long as you don't pose a threat to him or anyone he cares about, you should be fine.”
“You know?” Liam was upset about that.
“Not the time. Just don't worry about it and keep being you, okay.”
Crowley sighed. “Mother, this is what's called a devil's bargain, but it needs to be done. The Darkness, she needs to be locked away again, for all our sakes.”
“Really? And what makes this threat worse than any other?”
“She's God's sister,” Dean spilled the secret.
Rowena looked stunned. “Can this be true? His sister! In my day we’d all be burned at the stake for even thinking any of this.”
“You see then, Mother, the need for urgency,” Crowley said to her.
“Well, if my deciphering of the book is so pivotal, I’d like to know what’s in it for me.”
“You mean, other than your life?” Dean was only about half surprised at her reaction.
“Speaking of which, I’ll make you a little deal Mommy. You pitch in like a good girl, and I’ll call off my assassins. No more looking over your shoulder, for now,” Crowley offered.
“I’ll need the Codex, of course. And the code breaker Charlie devised,” Rowena seemed satisfied with that for the moment.
“Yeah, you’ll get limited access. Supervised.” Sam said.
“We're not just gonna hand them over, no strings attached,” Liam added. “We've done some dumb things, but we're not that stupid.”
“We need to know exactly this how to open the cage, and how to protect Liam once it is,” Dean spelled out their goal.
“Just what’s in this cage that’s so dangerous?” Rowena asked.
“Lucifer,” Sam answered.
“Lucifer? The original Dark Prince?”
Dean nodded. “Yes, an archangel so bad assed that he was personally dumped into the cage by God himself.”
Rowena seemed thrilled by that. “Well, let’s get to it then lads.”
Rowena was of course chained to a table with the cuffs that would prevent her from doing any magic. Sam went to get the codex from its hiding place in the bunker. Dean caught wind of a massacre at a church, and decided to go check it out. He thought it might be related to Amara. Dean actually wanted Liam to go with him so they could have some alone time to discuss things. But in a strange twist, Liam insisted on staying. He was very invested in getting some face time with Lucifer, as much as Dean hated that.
Dean called Sam to check in after he'd been to the crime scene. “Hey Sammy. Sorry to stick you on witch duty, as hard as that sounds.”
“Every bit. But the stuff we’re looking for is definitely in the book.” Sam noticed Rowena trying to sneak a look at a different page. “Hey! No snooping around there. Focus. You find anything at the church?” he turned his attention back to Dean.
“I just got here. The cops said that the last time the victims were seen alive, one of them, a priest, they were talking to some mystery woman. She was not killed.”
“Amara?”
“Probably. The place is covered in blood.”
“She’s upping her game. She’s going to pass the point where we can deal with her.”
“Well, at least past the point where the two of us can deal with her. Are you sure that you’re okay with this whole deal?”
Sam turned to face the wall. “Not even a little,” he lowered his voice. “But what choice do we have, you know? If Lucifer is somehow able to reach out, there must be a reason. He must know something.”
“Okay, well for the record, I hate it. Just wait for me. Don’t do anything until I get there.”
“Right now it’s just research, but, you got it, nothing without you.”
“You talk about trust,” Rowena said when Sam hung up.
“No, I don't.”
“You and your blood thirsty brother say we’re partners in this holy war against Amara and yet,” she held up her shackled hands, “trussed like a chicken.”
“You’re sitting there with the Book of the Damned and the means to read every word, and you think I’m going to set you free? Like Liam said, we're not that stupid.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Just quit playing the victim and get back to work. It's not like we have a lot of time to play with here.”
Rowena sighed, but turned her attention back to the book. “Ah hah!” she stood up.
“What?” Sam asked.
“Well, I’ll need some ingredients, but you may summon Fergus. And tell him to bring a hand cart.”
“A hand cart?” Sam raised an eyebrow at that.
“We're going to hell.”
Sam nodded. “Okay, Liam, you try to get a hold of Dean. I'll contact Crowley.”
“Why do we need Dean?” Liam asked.
“Because you know how worried he is about this whole thing. Would you want to be on the sidelines if he was doing something you really didn't like?”
“I suppose you have a point,” the blond pulled out his phone.
When Liam couldn't get a hold of Dean Sam tried. Rowena stood in the corner looking impatient. “Sam, everything is in order. Fergus is coming.”
“I promised Dean I’d call.”
“I promised Lincoln a fun night at the theater. Things change. It’s now or never.”
“Whatever he's into, he's not picking up for either of us,” Liam pointed out. “That worries me, but all the more reason to get this over with.”
Sam gave in, and a little while later Crowley was leading them down a dim corridor with high brick walls lit by torches. There was no ceiling, only a constant storm overhead. “Flop sweat sonny? Dread of what’s to come?” Rowena commented as they walked.
“Can it,” Crowley snapped back at her. “Your barbs may amuse your circle of hags. You have no idea what you’re tampering with; what Lucifer is capable of.”
“Well dear, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of hell. I must say it’s not as scenic as I’d expected.”
“We are in the furthest reaches of hell, limbo, where I send unruly souls for timeout. What it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in security.”
They came to a large empty cage, and Rowena started to paint sigils around the base. “You sure you really want to do this?” Sam asked Liam.
“Yes and no,” the blond answered. “I may not like it, but I feel it needs to be done.”
Sam nodded and looked around them with a little shiver. “Makes your flesh crawl, doesn’t it, Moose?” Crowley said. “I get it. I’m the king of this place. It’s still not my cup of tea.”
“I don’t know, Crowley. I’d say it suits you. Dark. Empty.”
“Fascinating, the utter contempt when I’m in the midst of saving the Winchester’s bacon again.”
“The point of this is to save everyone’s bacon, including yours. Let’s just hope she knows what she’s doing. This cell won't hold crap if the warding is not right.”
“Don’t you worry about me, Samuel. I’m a professional,” Rowena said as she finished.
“Are you certain you can do this without actually opening the cage?” Crowley asked her.
“We are about to find out, aren’t we.” She started chanting and the sigils lit up. Then a ring of fire surrounded the empty cage. Rowena seemed pleased with herself. “Now, let’s have a go at that cage.”
“It begins,” Crowley was nervous as his mother began chanting again.
A cloud of smoke formed inside the cage, and as the figure of a man with glowing red eyes appeared, Liam's turned red as well. “I knew you'd come eventually,” Lucifer stepped forward and smirked down at Astiratu.
“Cut the crap,” the half angel growled. “You've barely let me have a moment's peace. I'm giving you what you want, so I better get what I want in return.”
“Can't we just stop and enjoy the moment? I never get visitors.”
“For good reason. What do you know about the Darkness?”
“You still just get right down to it. I’m aware of what she was, but that was eons ago.”
“Well, she's loose now, and we both know you're aware, otherwise you wouldn't have reached out. And I know you're a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them. She poses a threat to even you in your cozy little cage.”
“That's true. But say, where's Dad in all of this?”
Astiratu let out a short little sigh. “Nowhere that we can find, but you probably knew that since he didn't try to stop your last little adventure.”
“But you did,” Lucifer chuckled at that. “You're a force that only Dad can stop, and I always thought it was the threat of you ending up like me or worse that kept you a good little soldier.”
“I told you to cut the crap! I'm not here for a friendly little philosophical debate. I want to know what you know, and what you can offer me.”
“Well, I did help Dad seal up the Darkness all those years ago. She’s quite a force. Determined to take over everything, even back then. Prone to tantrums. I can see why Pop is laying low. Now that sis is here, God’s not the only circus in town.”
“Is she equal to him in power?”
“Raw power? Sure. But she’s got none of the experience. God is a master strategist. I mean, there's you. Oddly enough he made you a lot like her, just with a little less power so you could be controlled. You could easily outsmart and thwart her.”
“Then why do we need you?”
“God needs me to help put the cat back in the bag. He can’t do it by himself. Seen that movie.”
“Okay, so you're willing to help. But with you there's always a catch, so you might as well come out with it now.”
“I need a ride out of here. I mean, I look swell in here and everything...”
Astiratu raised an eyebrow. “You want a vessel.”
“One who is strong enough to hold me, handy, and available now. Catch my drift?”
“Fuck no! Did you really think I'd agree to that again? The last time was to try and trick you. I still won in the end, so...”
“Yeah, you did. I made a little mistake; forgot how much of a power boost rage gives you. But, Sunshine, you're here, so that means you're out of options.”
“I am not going to just give up everything and turn you loose on the world again with my body.”
“That's certifiable!” Sam chimed in.
Lucifer turned his gaze to Sam. “Okay, hold on there a second cowboy, take a breath. You have been working with Crowley. You passed certifiable three off ramps ago. And look, I’m no fan of the ruler of the universe, but here I am, ready to pitch in. Desperate times call for desperate measures.”
“Well, you said yourself I can outsmart her,” Astiratu said. “So I'm not that desperate. My body is starting to break down with just me in it anyhow, so too bad so sad.”
“It doesn't necessarily have to be you.”
“What? The last time it did, so what changed?”
“Nothing, I just really wanted you. Fun fact though, your father's deal with my brother, it didn't open up the door for just him.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I can inhabit anyone with Daniel Spencer's blood in their veins. It's supposed to be passed on from father to oldest son, but I believe Sammy here will work as well. Do I have an invitation to look forward to?”
Sam shook his head. “No. I won’t do it. There has to be another way.”
Suddenly the sigils around the cage began to fade, and the flames died down. When they were gone both Astiratu and Sam were in the cage with Lucifer, who had a smug smirk on his face. “And now I have you right where I want you.”
Astiratu growled. “Are you really that thick?”
Lucifer only chuckled. “You're the one who told me your body is breaking down. I guess I outsmarted you that time. Unless you want your mortal self to die, you don't have the strength to fight me off. Not to mention the insurance policy.” He moved over to a terrified looking Sam and stroked the younger Winchester's cheek. “You wouldn't want anything to happen to him, now would you?”
The half angel yanked Lucifer away from Sam. “You know, I've met narcissistic humans who take rejection better than you do.”
Lucifer turned them so he could pin Astiratu to the cage bars with his body. “I admit it, I'm not over you. I'm sure if Dean were here he'd agree with me, you're like a drug. You've done some bad things to me, but I want more. I think eventually you'll see things my way.” He turned his attention to Sam for a moment. “Make yourself at home roomie. Top or bottom bunk?”
Astiratu tried to shove Lucifer away, but the arch angel anticipated his move and pulled the blond in for a kiss. The half angel bit his lip, and he pulled back, blood dripping down his chin. “Sam may be afraid of you, but I'm not.”
Lucifer wiped the blood away. “No, that's not your style. But let me remind you again that you need me, you stubborn bitch.”
