A/N: I’d like to tale this time to thank Lisa,
for reading all this and encouraging me to continue. I don’t think this story would have come so
far without you.
“Good Morning, Mr. Lyman. I’m John.
It looks like we are going to be spending some quality time together for
the next few days. Any
questions?” A young man walked
into Josh’s room with a smile on his face.
Both Donna and Josh turned to look at him.
“First off I’m Josh,
and second spending time how?”
“You my friend are scheduled for
some therapy. We gotta get you up and
moving.”
Donna stood up grabbing her bag and
coat. “I’ll be back later. I’ll give a call. If you’re good I’ll bring you a
present.” Donna smiled and walked out of
the room.
“Your girlfriend didn’t have to
leave.”
Josh didn’t like the chipperness of this guy’s voice. “She is not my girlfriend.”
“Oh so she’s fair game?” John said looking back at the door.
“Are you republican?”
“Does it really matter? Now, I’m just going to see what you can do. Then we will set up a course of action.”
After
a half an hour of testing and questions, Josh was yawning. Sensing that his charge was tiring John
decided to stop for a bit. “It seems
that your biggest hurdle will be your legs.
There isn’t much strength there.
We can work on building up the muscle.
I’m going to talk to your doctor a little later on. I am worried about the nerve damage too. That might also cause some problems.
“So
here is what we’re going to do. Starting
tomorrow I’m going to have you down in the gym twice a day. In the morning we’re going to work on your
legs. First we’re going to work on
building up muscle, and then control. In
the afternoons, we’ll work on your hands and arms. Besides getting your dexterity back, your
upper body will be supporting a good portion of your weight for a while. So we are going to make sure that they are up
for the challenge.
“Josh. I don’t lie to my patients. This is going to be hard. I’ve looked at your chart and there is a
chance that you might not walk again. I
believe that this chance is small. But
it will take a lot of work on your part.
And you have to want it. Your
friends, family, and doctors can encourage you, but this will only work if you
want it to. Do you want to?”
Josh
taught for a moment. “Of course I
do. When do we start?”
“Tomorrow. If you can get someone to bring you a change of clothes that would
be great. Maybe
two or three. Shorts
and tee-shirts. You will be
sweating.”
“I
can do that. Any idea how long I’m going
to be here for?” He liked the no
nonsense attitude that he was faced with.
It was refreshing for someone in politics.
“Depends on you.
Work your ass off and it could be less than a month. But we’re going to take it day by day. Some days are going to be hard. Just stick with it.” He patted Josh on the leg. “You look beat. Rest a while.
I’ll come back later if you want to talk.”
“Thanks
John.” Josh once again was left to his
own thoughts
He
was scared to say the least. Not being
able to walk again was the scariest thought.
The scars didn’t bother him. That
could be taken care of. But
walking? Would he be able to do his job
if he couldn’t get around? If it took too
long would they take his job from him.
His
musings were cut short by a knock on the door.
“Come in.” He called. Josh smiled when he saw who walked in. “Leo.”
“How
are you doing Josh?” His mentor sat down
in a chair by his bed.
“I
don’t know. They say I might not walk
again. And that they haven’t found the
guy who did this.”
“We
are looking for him. He didn’t leave
anything in your office.”
“I
know. He wore gloves, so there would be
no fingerprints.”
“There
is an agent outside to guard your door.
He is going to be keeping you company for a while. At least until we catch this guy.”
“A new friend. Joy.” Josh tried to joke. But inside he was terrified.
“Do
you think you could give a description?”
“Yeah. Do
we know how he got in?”
“Duct
work and a tour. There is a blurry image
of a man entering a bathroom but never coming out of it. They installed some more security measures in
the duct work and they are keeping agents around the public bathrooms keeping
track, making sure who ever goes in comes out again.”
“Is
Toby ok? This was because I was Jewish.”
“We
know Josh. Toby, as well as all the senior
staff has shadows until this guy is caught.
I brought an agent with me to take your statement if you are up for it.”
“Yeah.”
After
some questions from the agent, which Josh answered to
the best of his ability he was left alone again with Leo. “Are you okay? Do we need to call anyone for you?” He asked.
Knowing
what Leo was asking Josh answered truthfully.
“I don’t know. At this moment
they can’t even tell me if I’m going to walk again. I’m scared.
I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in a wheel chair.”
“I
understand Josh. I wish I could tell you
that it will be okay. But I don’t know.”
“Will
I be able to go back to work?”
“Why
wouldn’t you?” Leo asked shocked.
“I
don’t know. I just thought that maybe.”
“Josh. You’re mind wasn’t effective. And if you end up in a wheel chair, just
think, it will be easier to run over people’s toes if
you don’t like them.” Leo smiled. “Honestly.
It wouldn’t be the White House with out you.”
A
nurse carrying a tray came in next. “Hi Tasha.”
“Mr.
McGarry. How are you?”
“I’m
good. Better now that Josh is
awake. You brought him lunch?”
“Y'>“You
two know each other?” Josh asked as the
nurse wheeled a table over and put the try on it.
“Josh,
we got pretty friendly with the staff here while you were out. So what’s on the menu?”
Tasha made a big show of uncovering the can of Ensure. Josh made a face. “Tasha?” Making sure he got the name right. At her nod he continued. “Do you think I might be able to get
something besides liquid chalk?”
She
smiled at him. “Not yet. This stuff is good for you. Has all the vitamins and stuff that you need
to get out of here.”
“Can’t
I just have it in pill form?”
“I
can offer you chocolate of strawberry, but that is the limit of your choices.”
“Chocolate
I guess.” Josh grumbled.
“I’ll
make a note of it for dinner.” She
smiled as she walked out of the room.
“If
chalk was so healthy why didn’t they let you eat it in kindergarten?” Josh groaned as he took a sip of the foul
liquid.
“Would
you prefer a feeding tube?”
“Good
point.” He took another sip. “So when can I get back to work?”
“We’ll
talk to your doctor about that. Probably by the end of the week if you are up to it.” Josh took another few sips and then was
attacked by a yawn. “Tired?”
“A
little I guess.”
“I’ll
keep you company while you finish lunch, then you should take a nap.”
“Probably right. I
wish I wasn’t so tired all the time.”
“It
will get better. You rest. I’ll try and come back tomorrow.”
“Thanks
Leo.” He said while he closed his eyes.
