It took almost an hour to reach the main vessel in orbit, and to dock with it, and his hands were itching to wrap around his captors necks when they were released from their bonds. He restrained the impulse, if he killed them now, they would kill him in retaliation, and he wasn’t ready for that right now. He kept his head down as they dragged him out of the transport and along the corridors of the main ship, keeping quiet as his captors signaled at a door.
“What?” A rough voice snarled from the other side of the door.
“Captain, we have the prisoner we thought you would be interested in.” One of them called.
“Fine, bring it in.”
The door opened, and Jack was shoved inside. He finally raised his head, and looked up at the Captain defiantly. He was probably the ugliest man Jack had ever seen, corpulent, his face knarled and scarred, his hair long, stringy and tangled, and the smell of him was almost enough to turn Jack’s stomach.
“Ah, you really are very pretty, your holo images do not do you justice. I would have enjoyed your body. Pity.” The man sighed, clicking a couple of buttons on the console to the side of him.
“Unfortunately, the very hansom reward for your capture offered by your former masters insists that you be undamaged, and that would be unlikely if I had my fun.” He said, stroking his crotch, and Jack shuddered at the thought. The captain turned the screen on his console round, and Jack saw a picture of him in his uniform, and the impressive number of credits offered for his return to the time agency.
“Now that I am sure I have the right person, I will send the signal and summon them to collect you. This really is a very lucky planet for me. Enough Diamonds that my crew will never have to run cargo again, and a very nice sum of money for you, Captain Jack Harkness.” He said, rubbing his hands together gleefully.
“You will stay in here until they come for you. The door will be secured, and a guard placed outside, so I would suggest you do not attempt to leave these quarters.” The captain said, levering himself from his chair and waddling toward the door. He reached out as he passed, his hand grabbing and caressing Jack’s cock intimately through the fabric of his trousers.
“Such a pity.” He said again, fetid breath close to Jack’s ear and wafting across his face. Jack swallowed hard against the surge of nausea, forcing himself to hold his ground until the man was out of the room, then he crumpled to his knees on the floor, his hands cradling his belly protectively, feeling the slight swell under his hands, and the light flutter of movement of his child inside.
“Don’t you worry, there’s no way I’m going to let them get hold of either of us. We will get back to Daddy somehow.” He promised his baby softly.
He got up and pressed his ear to the door, listening hard. He could hear muffled voices outside indicating his guard was talking to someone. He maintained his position, listening. He would take on one guard, but there was no way he was risking two until he was armed. While he waited, leaning against the door, he opened his wrist computer, and started a scan of the ship. There were ten of the slavers aboard this ship, most clustered up the front in what he assumed was the bridge. Two outside this door, and another two whose readings indicated were probably sleeping. Also he picked up a half dozen life signs that were clustered inside an energy reading, prisoners, he deduced, probably from the planet below. He would have to get them out too. He heard an alarm start sounding, and listened harder at the door.
“What is it?” One of the two outside yelled.
“There has been an explosion at the mine, stay at your post, I have to get to the bridge.” One of the life signs moved away rapidly, and Jack grinned wolfishly, there was only one left outside the door, and he had a diversion to keep them all occupied. This was his chance. Jack triggered the door with his computer, and was upon the guard before the man had chance to turn around, snapping his neck with a single twist. He dropped the body carelessly on the floor inside the captain’s quarters, and took his gun, stepping carefully out into the corridor and relocking the door. Heading down the corridor away from the bridge, he shot a stray pair of the slavers who were approaching down the corridor, the two who had been sleeping, he confirmed with a check to his wrist computer. He almost passed the door without seeing the sign beside it, but a quick glance earned a wolfish grin. Auxiliary Control, the sign on the door proclaimed proudly.
“Oh yes.” Jack said, softly, his eyes almost seeming to light with a soft glow as he opened the door, hints of gold flecking his pupils.
Once he was in, he secured the door and started to explore the controls, overrides for the transmat, and oh yes, his grin grew more feral. The Self Destruct override. He quickly slipped control of those two systems away from the bridge, and as an afterthought, the control for the security fields where the prisoners were, he set up the sequence of commands he wanted to start with, and laughed as he hit the switch, watching his computer to confirm it had worked. The prisoners were gone, transmatted to the safety of the planet below, close to the town. There was the sound of thumping on the door, someone on the bridge had noticed they had been locked out of certain controls. He ignored the noise for the moment, calmly setting up a second command sequence. He triggered it as the door finally gave way, and as the captain raised his gun in Jack’s direction, Jack grinned, they were far too late. He transmatted away, appearing on the planet a mere heartbeat before the light of the ship exploding brightened the night sky.
“Bye bye, Captain.” He sneered up at the fading glow. People appeared at his side, hands grasping at his arms.
“You saved us.” One said.
“It was nothing.” He said with a grin, adrenaline still flooding his system. He knew he was going to crash hard when it ran out, and he needed to get back to the TARDIS before that happened.
“Look, the town should be just over that way. I have to go.” He said, pointing them in the right direction, and heading away in the direction of where the TARDIS had landed when they arrived.

Ianto turned sharply as the Doctor’s wracking cries stopped, concerned something might be wrong with the man. He saw him kneeling in the same spot, slightly breathless, his face wet from his tears, and a puzzled look on his face, a hand pressed lightly to his temple.
“What is it? Are you all right?” Ianto asked in alarm.
“The mating bond is intact.” He said, sounding confused.
“What? What’s a mating bond?”
“When I took Jack as my mate, our minds were joined, he could feel my mind, and I could feel his. When one partner dies, usually you know its coming, you can dissolve the bond at the moment of death so that the surviving partner isn’t severely damaged by the death of his mate. In the case of accidental death, or death by violent means, the bond should have shattered. I should be in a coma now, or dead, but I’m not. I can still feel his mind against mine.” The Doctor said, hope starting to lighten his face. He pushed himself to his feet, spinning to face the console.
“What does that mean?” Ianto asked, moving closer and wondering if the Doctor was maybe mad from grief.
“It means, Ianto Jones, that my mate is still alive.” The Doctor grinned, dashing around the console.
“Come on Jack, where are you, let me know where you are.” He whispered desperately, pointing every scanner he had at the planet that still turned placidly below them.

Jack reached the spot where the TARDIS had stood, and felt his heart sink at the empty depression in the grass.
“Not again. Please not again.” He prayed, feeling tears pricking his eyes. Then he shook himself, pulling himself together, and dashing them away. No, not again. He knew the Doctor wouldn’t leave without him again, he wouldn’t have left the last time if he had had a choice. He flipped open the cover of his wrist computer and activated the locator beacon that he had modified. It would lead the TARDIS to him, instead of the time agency, which had been its original function.
Aching and exhausted, he found a tree to lean against, a few yards from where the TARDIS had stood, and sat down in the darkness to wait. The last of his energy reserves finally deserted him, and he drifted off into unconsciousness.
*
“Yes.” The Doctor crowed after a few minutes of silent but frantic activity, making Ianto jump.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Jack’s locator beacon, we have him.” He grinned, grabbing Ianto in an exuberant hug and spinning him around. He released him and spun back to the console, setting a course for the source of Jack’s summons. They landed just yards from the spot that had been in before, and he dashed for the door, grabbing a torch on the way. He opened the door, and shone the light out, expecting to see Jack hurrying for them. There was no sign of him, but as he flashed the light around again, he saw Jack slumped against the tree.
“Ianto.” He called, tossing him the torch and leading him out to where Jack was.
“Is he all right?” Ianto asked as the Doctor knelt and checked Jack’s pulse.
“Yes, just exhausted I think. We’ll just take him to the med bay and make sure everything is OK though.” He said, gathering Jack up in his arms, and carrying him to the TARDIS with Ianto lighting the way.
“Full scan, and ultrasound, please.” He said to the TARDIS as he set Jack on the medical couch. She complied, the familiar blue light surrounding Jack’s stomach as she checked his vital signs. The results of her scan flashed up at the same moment the ultrasound image appeared. The image of the baby floated in mid air, sucking its thumb and shifting slightly as it slumbered securely.
“They’re both fine, Jack’s exhausted, but he’ll be up and about in no time with a bit of rest.” The Doctor confirmed to Ianto, leaning over to kiss his unconscious lover lightly.
“What do you think happened?” Ianto asked.
“I suspect Jack had a hand in the ship blowing up. We can ask him when he regains consciousness.” The Doctor said, dimming the lights and covering Jack with a blanket before ushering Ianto out.
“We’ll bring Bobby in first thing in the morning, whether Jack is awake or not. He needs to see that his mama is safe.” The Doctor told him.
“Yeah. I’ll just check on him before I go to bed, make sure he’s still asleep.” Ianto said. The Doctor put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently.
“I’ll check him, Ianto. You go and get some rest.” The Doctor said, turning Ianto in the direction of his own bedroom.
Ianto wasn’t surprised to see the Doctor dozing lightly beside Jack’s medical couch the next morning, one hand curled around Jack’s left hand. He stirred when Ianto carried Bobby in, looking round at him.
“Morning already?” He asked sleepily.
“Yeah, how is he?” Ianto asked.
“No change, still out. He and the baby are stable though, so he’s just resting.” The Doctor said, his free hand lightly stroking over the barely there bump. Bobby caught sight of Jack lying in the bed, and held his arms out.
“Mama.” He yelled, starting to wriggle hard. Ianto tightened his grip in alarm, afraid he would drop him, and the Doctor nodded his head in the direction of the couch.
“It’s ok, he can’t hurt him.” He reassured Ianto.
Ianto carefully set Bobby down on the couch, and he moved up, one hand lightly patting at Jack’s face.
“Mama.” He yelled again, putting his head on Jack’s chest. The Doctor grinned brightly as Jack’s eyelids began to flutter, and his eyes slowly drifted half open. He raised one hand weakly to stroke the light hair on his chest.
“Hey Bobby.” He croaked weakly. He looked at the others, and managed a faint smile.
“I knew you wouldn’t leave me.” He said.
“Never again.” The Doctor swore, leaning over to kiss him tenderly. They broke apart as Bobby giggled and wrapped his arms around the Doctor’s neck.
“Papa, up.” He ordered, and held on tightly as the Doctor sat back up. The Doctor grinned down at him, holding him on his lap as he looked back to Jack.
“Can you tell us what happened on their ship?” He asked.
“Not much. The Captain said that he was going to sell me to the agency, and considering the price on the wanted poster, I’m not surprised. I didn’t fancy that much though, so I got out of the quarters they had shut me in, killed my guard, went to Auxiliary Control, got the other prisoners off, set the self destruct, and got myself off.” He said, gratefully sipping water through the straw Ianto held to his lips.
“I thought I lost you when I saw that ship blow up. It was the worst few minutes of my life before I realized our link was intact.” The Doctor said quietly, his hand stroking up Jack’s arm.
“I had an unhappy moment myself, when I saw the TARDIS was gone, but I knew you wouldn’t leave me.” He said again. He rested his free hand on his stomach, stroking lightly.
“Is she OK?” He asked.
“The baby is fine. What makes you think it’s a girl?” He asked, his hand joining Jack’s over their baby. He felt a slight chill as Jack’s eyes went distant, faint gold flecks lighting his pupils again, but he said nothing as the flecks faded quickly.
“It’s a girl, I feel her.” He said softly, pulling the Doctor down into a light kiss before he drifted off to sleep again.
“What was that light in his eyes?” Ianto asked as they walked down the corridor a few minutes later, Bobby determinedly toddling ahead of them.
“I don’t know.”
“Could it be something to do with his immortality?”
“I don’t know, I….. somehow I don’t think so. I think that is something that has always been there, I seem to remember I saw it, much fainter than that, once before. On the game-station, before he went to fight the Daleks. There was a very faint hint of gold when he said goodbye.”
“So it isn’t something we should be worrying about?”
“I don’t think so.” The Doctor shrugged. Whatever was buried inside Jack, the TARDIS would let him know if it was something really dangerous. He hoped.
