Chapter Seven
Kristien was on her tennis court. She was busy sending the ball back past Carsten at one hell of a speed, who was just tapping it over to her for her to practise. Her tennis court was state of the art, all electronic and read outs from the speed of the ball to the position of it on the court. Sayid walked down and watched for a few moments. He kept looking at the computerised speed read out of the tennis ball with surprise. Most of the time it was well over one hundred miles an hour.
Carsten saw Sayid stood at the side at the same time his blackberry went off. “Why don’t you play? I need to take this.” Carsten held out the racquet to Sayid whilst he went and sat up in the umpires chair to read his blackberry.
“Would you like the first serve?” Sayid asked.
Kristien shook her head. “You will need all the help you can get so you can take first service.”
“Best of three game then?” Sayid asked hoping to have a longer chat with Kristien during the game.
Kristien nodded. Carsten chuckled to himself, this was going to be fun.
Sayid served the first serve and Kristien returned it into his body with deadly accuracy. Sayid looked back at Kristien not believing how she returned it so quickly, nor how she had managed to get so much top spin on it either. Did she deliberately aim for him?
“Love fifteen.” Carsten started to keep score even though the computer automatically did it, Carsten always felt that at times like this humiliation by speech was needed.
Sayid changed sides and served again. This time Kristien returned across court again with extra speed. Sayid ran to the ball to meet it as a volley. He managed to hit the ball but to the bottom of his side of the net. Kristien didn’t even bother watching and was already stood to receive the next serve.
“Love thirty.” Carsten chuckled.
Sayid started to get frustrated and served a very weak serve to Kristien. She returned it again with deadly accuracy right down the tramline leaving Sayid just standing there with disbelief.
“Love forty.” Carsten actually allowed a laugh to escape. “Break point.” Sayid glared at Casten’s laugh.
Sayid served but it went direct into the bottom of the net. Frustrated and getting riled by Carsten, he served a double fault.
“Game Kristien.” Carsten announced. “Kristien to serve.”
Kristien served a deadly ace right down the centre line.
“Fifteen love.” Carsten was loving this.
“Kristien I need to talk to you.” Sayid shouted across the court to her.
Kristien served another deadly fast ball down to Sayid’s backhand, he managed to miss hit it due to the speed and spin that she had created that it went over the high fence that surrounded the court. One of the protection dobermanns ran over to grab the escaped ball and promptly laid down to start to chew it.
“Thirty love and dead ball.” Carsten watched the Dobermann make short work of breaking the tennis ball into bits with his powerful jaws.
“It’s about Friday.” Sayid shouted across the court.
Kristien served another deadly ace this time the ball reached 125 miles an hour and whizzed past Sayids ear without him even managing to raise his racquet.
“Shit.” Kristien muttered under her breath as she realised she missed him.
Carsten looked down from the umpires chair knowing what Kristien was up to and smiled. “Forty love and championship point.”
“Please Kristien.” Sayid pleaded with her to talk.
Kristien ignored the plea and served another 100 mph serve at Sayid who somehow managed to return the ball, more a fluke than an actual hit. The ball came back to Kristien without any lustre at all. She sized it up and then returned the ball with such a forceful forehand the ball firmly went past Sayid and lodged itself firmly into the fence.
“Game, set, match.” Carsten announced and jumped down from the umpires chair and started to walk over to Kristien.
Sayid ran over to Kristien’s side of the court and met Carsten. “Who the hell taught her to play tennis?” Sayid asked Carsten.
“Oh It’s usually Jimmy Connors but lately its Andre Agassi.” Carsten replied. “I think Kristien has the hots for Agassi as he has a pony tail.”
“Oh.” Sayid replied and walked over to Kristien with Carsten. “Please I just want to talk.”
Kristien looked at Carsten and he walked back to the net and waited. She stood with her dark sunglasses on and folded her arms over her racquet. “What about Friday?” she demanded.
“I have reconsidered.” Sayid told her.
“What the marriage?” Kristien asked hopefully.
“No, that will go ahead as planned.” Sayid told her. Kristien threw a ball up and did another massive serve. “I have reconsidered the wedding night.” He told her hoping to get some reaction from her. “I will allow you to choose the time and place that you will come to me.”
“What?” Kristien snapped with surprise. “You won’t throw me over your nethanderal shoulders and drag me kicking and screaming to the chains in your cave?”
Sayid looked hurt with Kristien’s cave man comments. “I would never do that.”
“Huh, that’s not what you said the other day. You said you would consummate the marriage on Friday regardless of my wishes.” Kristien repeated word for word what was said. “Now tell me that is not what cave men used to do.”
“I have reconsidered.” Sayid confirmed to her again. “You have the choice to come to me.”
“And if I don’t?” Kristien asked directly. “Then what?”
“There is no time limit, Kristien.” Sayid started to walk off to leave her.
“So you are telling me that I have the choice and no time limit?” Kristien asked again for confirmation.
Sayid turned around before leaving the court. “That is correct.”
Carsten smiled to himself knowing that Hawke had managed to persuade Sayid.
“What the hell is going on here?” Kristien asked. “One minute I am going to be dragged off by Captain Caveman here and the next I get to chose if he will ever come near me.” Kristien said openly. “Something is going on here, no Arab man backs down especially over a woman.”
“You are very persuasive, Kristien.” Carsten complimented her.
“What did you lot do, hold a gun to his head?” Kristien asked shaking her head in disbelief.
Carsten looked innocently over at Kristien and pointed to himself. “Moi?”
“Yes you!” Kristien replied and at that time both her blackberry and Carsten’s blackberry went off. Kristien reached into her pocket and pulled out and read the email. “Oh fuck, that’s not good.” Kristien looked up at Carsten.
“What now?” Carsten queried not bothering to get his blackberry out.
“A US Aircraft Carrier has gone down in the Indian Ocean.” Kristien repeated the information on the email. “They are sending some destroyers over to see if anyone has survived.”
Carsten looked at Kristien with disbelief. “What do you mean it’s gone down? Carriers just don’t sink, not unless they are called the Titanic. They are designed to stay afloat.”
“Not when the iceberg is a nuclear warhead.” Kristien replied.
