Chapter Seven
Airwolf cut through the night skies at over mach one point five. Hawke had said very little to Dominic who knew better than to challenge Hawke when he was in his deep brooding mood. The silence between the two men was only broken by the electronic sounds of the EDCC where Dominic monitored all of Airwolf’s on board systems. Dominic accessed the Starlight Amplification System again that Hawke was using to fly less than fifty feet off the floor. He knew they were headed to a meeting that Hawke had organised but that was it. Hawke had kept tight lipped over this. Not even Archangel was contacted which didn’t surprise Dominic as sometimes Hawke kept the FIRM out until it was absolutely necessary.
Airwolf’s computers blipped into action.
“We’re coming up on those co ordinates String.” Dominic told Hawke.
Hawke just glanced at the computer screen. “Anything down there?” Hawke asked in a firm voice.
“Checking.” Dominic pressed a couple of Airwolf’s touch screens. “We got a couple of trucks heading towards this location five miles out and what appears to be a heavily armoured Jeep with them.” Dominic read off the screens. “You want me to trace them?”
“No.” Hawke was short with Dominic. “Check what’s on the trucks. Scan for Nuclear Weapons.”
“Nukes?” Dominic raised his eyebrows. “Oh, checking.” Dominic changed the scanners and found what Hawke was looking for. “Four nukes found on those trucks heading our way and I will say it again String, I don’t like this not letting Archangel know what we are up to.”
“It’s Carsten’s idea.” Hawke finally admitted to the older Italian.
“Oh, since when do you listen to him?” Dominic queried now engrossed as to why Hawke was even talking with Carsten let alone doing a mission planned by him. Hawke remained aloof, not giving anything away.
Down below the jeep and the two trucks all parked up and several heavily armed soldiers got out and checked the area. Out from the Jeep two men stepped out.
Hawke watched the computer screen. “ID them Dom.” Hawke instructed.
Dominic typed into Airwolf’s on board computers and the ID came up on the screen. “We have a KGB Arms dealer named Stavilav and another arms dealer known only as the Minotaur.”
“Combat Mode.” Hawke ordered.
“What weapons?” Dominic asked selecting the ADF pod and Chain guns.
“All of them.” Hawke said and he pressed the side of his helmet and the TADS appeared on his visor.
“You got it.” Dominic replied after pressing all the buttons on the combat panel.
Hawke guided Airwolf in at Mach One and reversed the engines over the trucks and jeep below. All of the soldiers had their mouths wide open in admiration of the helicopter as dawns early light shone down. Stavilav and The Minotaur stood firm. They knew that this was the helicopter promised to them.
Hawke hovered Airwolf down less than eighteen inches off the ground as if coming into land. At the very moment Hawke would have deployed the landing gear he tugged at the Chain Guns. Airwolf burst into life and instantly killed several soldiers, the rest hit the deck trying to aim their meaningless automatics at Airwolf’s armour plating.
Stavilav and The Minotaur both headed for the armoured Jeep when Hawke pressed the missile button sending a Shrike missile exploding the jeep on contact, killing Stavilav and the Minotaur instantly. Hawke turned Airwolf to the two trucks and sent two hellfires to both trucks sending hundred feet fireballs into the sky. Hawke pressed his visor up and surveyed the burning scene of devastation in front of him, with stone cold eyes.
Dominic watched on the EDCC monitor in total shock, speechless.
