"You might wanna duck." The boys looked at each other quickly before falling to the ground under a hail of gun fire.
The demon flinched back and groaned as it was pelted with bullets again. Itsnewly acquired gunshot wounds smoldered angrily; the demon tried to claw at them briefly before it vanished. The Winchesters rose up from their crouched position on the ground, staring at the place the demon had been. That shouldn't have worked, Sam thought. Didn't work for us. How the heck did it work forthem? "That shouldn't have worked," He said as much as they turned to face their rescuers.
"Holy water," explained Nicki, holstering her hand gun in the back of her pants. "We soak our bullets in it for a week before we load 'em. Gets 'em all extra sacredy. Very effective with consecrated iron, nine out of ten success rate for most big bad scaries that pass this way." Her sister dashed past her and the still-stunned pair to the victim on the ground. "So, you boys shoot at things like this often?" Nicki asked, her tone completely inappropriate for a situation regarding demons, gunfire, and other spooky things.
"What was that about non-psycho vibe and trigger-shy?" Sam mumbled to his brother.
"Hey, I've been wrong a lot today, back off!" Dean hissed back, embarrassed that they'd had to be saved, and saved by girls no less.
"She's unconscious but still breathing. Her pulse is a little erratic, probably from shock." Audrey said methodically over the woman, "Her neck wound is superficial, it won't kill her, but it will leave a scar. She should be fine. Your head is bleeding by the way." She added as an afterthought, glancing up at Sam who touched his scalp.
"Damn," he cursed, looking at the blood on his hand.
"It's probably nothing major. We need to get out of here though. Cops will be here any minute." Audrey said standing and walking back to the group, not even pausing in stride as she and her sister made their way to leave.
"Wait, whoa! We can't just leave her here!" Sam argued glancing between the victim on the ground and their erstwhile rescuers.
"She'll be fine. She's not in any immediate danger and it won't come back now. The cops will be here soon; they'll take her to the hospital. How do you think we would explain her condition if took here there? Found her on the side of the road?" the auburn haired woman reasoned.
"She's right Sammy. We gotta get out of here. That much gunfire is bound to attract some attention that we don't need." Police sirens could be heard closing in from a distance confirming this.
"God dammit," Nicki hissed, "I'm not goin' to jail for you, so move your ass or I'm ditchin' the lot of you." With that, the blonde took off, her sister following.
After a moment of hesitation, so did the Winchesters.
The group made their way out of the other side of the park without being seen, but far away from the bar and the Impala. So after a few blocks, and a couple fence hops for good measure, Sam and Dean wound up following the girls back to their house to wait until the cops had left the area.
"Are you sure this is ok? We don't want to put you all in any trouble." Sam offered, ever the compassionate one.
"It's fine. Couple hours tops, and you can be on your way. I doubt that thing's gonna follow us. Getting shot at is a major deterrent, even for demons."
"Besides, this place is like a supernatural fortress. Safest place in the world," Nicki echoed her sister as Audrey dug out her keys and opened the door.
"Back so soon? Nothing interesting out tonight?" The cheerful tone of Cordeila asked, announcing her presence before she entered the room. "Oh my goodness! What happened to you?" She asked, concerned over the slightly busted up boys and her serious looking nieces.
"Something interesting happened alright, just not at the bar. Though somebody wouldn't know about that because she was late," Nicki complained, closing the door behind them.
"Demon attack; we're fine, but they're a little banged up. Keep some pressure on that," Audrey reminded Sam before moving past all of them further into the house, ignoring her sister's complaint.
"Oh dear! Here? That's certainly an interesting turn of events. " The silver haired woman pondered, pausing for a moment to think to herself before snapping back. "Oh well, right now I supposed it can't be helped. You all go on into the living room for a spell. I'll make you all some tea."
"No tea!" A chanted unison between Corbin sisters echoed through the house, and seemed to reach almost everything except Cordelia's ears.
"Crazy old tea junky, never listens to a damn thing," Nicki muttered to herself, "Come on, let's go. Might as well get this over with," Dean and Sam looked at each other curiously before following after the blonde as requested.
The room, like the previous one they had been in together, was overly decorated. Knickknacks and souvenirs from all around the world covered almost every free space. It all looked rather old, worn yet still in pristine condition. Like the other room, the very oddity made it all somehow fit.
"Sit where ever you like," Nicki said in an offhanded tone, choosing a seat onthe arm of an antique sofa that looked very beautiful, but not very comfortable.
"That's ok. We'll stand." Dean replied, still a little on edge about being in this house, unarmed, and pretty much all an all defenseless, given the circumstances.
"Well you standin' around lookin' like a snake is about to jump up and bite you in the ass is makin' me nervous, so can you be suspicious and anxious while sitting?" Nicki complained, crossing her arms.
Dean furrowed his brows at the blonde's question, but with a grumble sat down in one of the matching chairs. "Thank you," she added sarcastically, and got a frown from the oldest Winchester.
Sam had to smirk at him. Dean didn't like to be bossed around, and he was actually a little amazed he didn't put up much more argument. He figured that since this was their house, their turf, Dean wasn't going to pick a fight over something petty. It was still kinda cute how he grumbled like a two year old who'd been scolded, though.
"Sam." The taller Winchester turned around as the other Corbin returned with a first aid kit, "Come here, let me check that head wound," she said, gesturing to the chair across from her.
"I'm fine. It's nothing serious," he said, like he had scraped his hand instead of spilt his head.
"Don't give me that ''tis but a flesh wound' crap. Sit down," she told him more forcefully, getting things out of the kit and setting it on the table. Sam still didn't move.
Audrey looked up at him fully now. And looking directly in his eyes, her almond shaped, honey orbs locking with forest green, she said in complete seriousness, "You can sit down or I can put you down. I don't have a problem with either, but I would prefer to have less work to do." Sam furrowed his brows at her, but cautiously did as he was 'asked'. "Thank you. Now was that so hard?" Sam scoffed a little at her as he slumped in the chair.
Audrey smiled softly at him out of the corner of her eye as she did some final prep. Sam looked down at the floor, entranced by the intricate pattern of the Indian rug. He was still worried about the woman in the park, where the demon was, and what he and his brother's next move would be. The girls had saved them, which was a pretty good indicator that they hadn't summoned the demon. So that meant that someone else had, which meant they had to find this person and stop them before any more people got hurt. That was all he ever wanted out of this. That no more people got hurt if he could help it. That no one else had to end up like him or his family.
The younger Winchester was drawn out of his thoughts when a hand gently touched his hand and moved it from his forehead. "This is gonna sting a little," he heard her say, as she carefully moved his bangs out of the way with one hand and brought a cloth to his head with the other, but he wasn't pay attention, suddenly distracted by her face instead of the floor.
It was something in her eyes, something that held him there. He didn't think he had ever seen eyes like hers before. They seemed so vast and mysterious, like the whole world was figured out behind them in rubiks cube fashion. They sparkled, almost like shiny copper in the light, and when she smiled he'd noticed. It was like there was magic there. And yet, she seemed….lost. Somewhere deep in those eyes, behind some place that he was sure almost no one could see unless they were this close, was something like a sort of sadness in the back of those warm amber orbs. He felt bad for her. He knew that look. He lived it. And somewhere in his mind he thought to himself that an emotion like that should never mar such a pretty face.
Sam hissed a little as the alcohol was dabbed over his cut gently, bringing him back to reality. "Sorry," Audrey apologized genuinely, pulling back a little before carefully patting the wound again. Sam flinched less this time now that he was paying attention. "It looks ok. You cracked it pretty good when you went down, but nothing too serious. Head lacerations always bleed a lot, even when they're minor. You don't need stitches; just a couple of butterfly sutures should do the trick. You'll have a pretty nasty goose egg on your head, though."
Sam gave her a wry smile. "You seem pretty good at this."
Audrey smiled at Sam's compliment before switching to a new gauze pad to stop the bleeding.
"I should. Wouldn't want those six years in Columbia to go to waste,"
"Yeah, your aunts said that you spent some time there. What was it for? Peace Corp or something?"
Audrey laughed lightly at his question as she picked up a pack of the adhesive sutures and applied the ends to either side of the cut. "Columbia University…"
Sam closed his eyes and sighed in embarrassment, laughing at himself quietly. "I'm an idiot."
Audrey giggled at him again as she applied a second tab in the same fashion. "You're not an idiot. It's an…honest mistake.. I guess," she said, putting the supplies away back in the box.
"So….Columbia, that's a nice school. You studied medicine. I hear their medical school program is like in the top five in the country or something." Sam asked, trying to change the subject, and noticed that Audrey flinched before smiling at him again.
"Yeah, they have a great program. And I, uh, didn't finish." Sam grimaced a little at the sad tone that crossed her face and voice as she snapped the case shut.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to-"Sam stopped when Audrey held up her hand.
"Don't apologize. It's…nothing, just…some stuff came up and couldn't finish my last year. I'm, uh, gonna go put this back." The dark auburn-haired woman didn't give him a chance to say anything further as she quickly stood up and exited the room.
Sam watched her leave for a moment before getting up and going over to where his brother sat, still pouty and quietly staring at his boots and the blonde in an alternating fashion.
"So, now that your head's not bleeding profusely, commence the interrogation." Nicki said flippantly as her sister took a seat beside her.
"Well, I have a question," Dean said, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "Now this is gonna sound a little personal, and I do apologize, but what the fuck?" Nicki snickered at him a little before clamping her hand over her mouth. "What, you think this is funny?"
"No, no, it's not funny," she replied while attempting to keep a straight face that nevertheless broke out into a smirk. "Well, it's a little funny."
"Nick," Audrey warned glancing up at her sister.
"What? Come on, it's a little funny! Hunters always think they're so freakin' stealthy, that they can ninja through anything. You even gotta admit that it's a little funny."
"You knew we were hunters?" Dean asked seriously. Nicki smirked at him with a look of superiority.
"Oh yeah, it wasn't hard to figure out. All you hunters have that same look about you of 'oh I'm such a bad ass 'cause I kick demon ass in my free time'. Not a scrap one of you original in the bunch," she chastised. "Plus you're not the first ones to show up on our doorstep. You just happen to be some of the few that weren't gunning for us personally."
"Gunnin' for you? Why would hunters be after you?"
The sisters looked between each other and then back at the brothers in confusion.
"You really don't know? Like seriously?" Audrey asked, genuinely surprised.
"No, what?" Sam replied.
Beside him, his brother sighed angrily, connecting the dots and realizing the truth that had been whispering to them since they started.
"Because they're witches Sam."
