A/N: Here’s chapter nine. A little episode rewrite this time around. It has a little filler feeling but to be honest, a lot of the original episodes had that too. It was comedy after all. XD”I hope you’ll still like it.
Notes and comment responses are at the end of the chapter.
Please leave a comment; even if it is criticism, I’m striving to get better after all. Enjoy!
Chapter 9: Ice Shack
Point Place, Wisconsin
December 29, 1977
Location:
Burkhart mansion
In the last few days Jackie and Hyde both had to work, and since their work times were so different and Jackie’s parents were back home again, they barely saw each other. When they did, it was mostly at Eric’s basement, with the others around them. But today Steven surprisingly came over, to accompany her to work, because Leo closed the Photo Hut ealier. He would also sleep over later, since her father were attending an conference with an overnight stay in Madison, and this time he actually took his wife with him.She had already changed into black, tight pants and a black and red AC/DC. She left it at the normal length, but she strategically planted scissor cuts in the arms and the lower part of the shirt, so you could see a little skin through them. Nothing too high, she wanted to look sexy, not slutty. Also Steven didn’t like it too much when other guys saw too much of her, not that he would ever admit it.Right now he was sitting on her bed reading, while she put the finishing touches to her make up. That was until her phone suddenly rang. Sighing she fussed with her hair a second longer, before finally standing up and taking the call.“Hello. Burkhart mansion, Jackie speaking.”“Jackie! It’s me!” a boisterous voice answered.“Hello, Michael. What can I do for you?” She said, a lot less enthusiastic, seating herself across from Steven on the bed, who arched an eyebrow at Michael’s name.“Ehm … well. You’re alone right? Hyde is working?” he asked, a little unsure.Somehow she got an inkling where this was going, but for now she played along, curious. “Yes. I’m alone.” She lied. Now Steven looked really suspicious, but she winked at him and held a finger up to her lips, signalling him to keep quiet. Luckily he complied and stayed silent.“Good! I mean, I got good news! Keep your day tomorrow free for me—ah! I mean us. Me and the ussers. I mean, others!”“Why?”“My uncle allowed us to stay in his cabin in the woods. It has a hot tub and everything. I already invited the others. There’s no need for you to ask anyone! I mean, no work here for you, I’m planning everything and it’s gonna be great. Seriously, no need to talk to anyone else but me!” Michael answered, probably thinking he was being suave about the whole thing.Oh God, it really was what she thought it was. The ice shack! She should nick this in the bud … or they could have a little fun with this. No, she couldn’t just decide this on her own, she didn’t want Steven to think the wrong thing. Even though thinks weren’t as strained as in her time, that Michael was her first boyfriend was still a sore spot for Steven. Michael’s constant comments weren’t helping either.“Oh, well … wait a second I need to think about it.” She answered. Holding her hand over the phone so Michael couldn’t hear them, she turned to Steven.“You want to play a little joke on Michael?” she asked him.“… what do you have in mind?” Steven asked back, intrigued now.“Michael just invited me to his uncle’s cabin with a hot tub and everything, while acting like he asked all of you to come with us. He obviously didn’t ask you and I’m not even sure he asked the others.” She said. She would have to lie a little here, or it would be hard to explain how she knew some things.“No, he didn’t.” Now Steven’s tone sounded a little pissed. “That little weasel’s still trying to make a move on you.”She sighed. “He’s just bored and his pride is hurt. Look here’s the thing. I met all of Michael’s siblings and they have big mouths, because of that I know that their uncle doesn’t own a cabin with a hot tub, he only owns an ice shack. So not only is he trying to lure me away from you, but he is also lying about the destination to tempt me.”Steven barked a laugh and she shushed him. She had a pretty good grip on the phone, but she didn’t want to risk Michael noticing anything.“An ice shack? Yeah, that’s just the place for you. Why the hell would he think that freezing your ass off would make you go back to him again?”
She cringed a little at that, remembering Fez’ stupid game which got her hopes up for them again. “No idea.”“Just tell that idiot no. Oh, and tell him I’ll punch him on both arms this time.”“I could do that … or we could teach him a little lesson by playing a trick on him.” She had to grin a little, as a plan started to form in her head.Putting his book away he looked at her again. “What do you mean?”“Well, Michael doesn’t know that I know all of this and he thinks only those are coming who he invited. If he even invited anyone but me.” She could hardly tell him, that she knew everyone but he would be there. “So how about giving him a little surprise? You would have to take the day off tomorrow though.”Steven started to smirk. “Hm. I’m beginning to see where you’re going with this. I wasn’t looking forward to tomorrow anyway. Leo made this flyer about free stuff, it might be better if I don’t open the Photo Hut at all. I could try asking him.”“It’s Leo. You could always tell him that he already agreed to it. He would believe it.” She joked.“How devious of you, doll.” He grinned, pulling her closer to him.“I’m learning from the best.” She leaned into him, mindful of the phone in her hands. “So what do you think?”“Yeah, it’s cool. Let’s play the jerk.” He agreed. He would still punch him though, they both knew it.She gave him a short kiss and tried to hold in her laughter as she went back to the phone. “Sounds good Michael. I love hot tubs. Why don’t you just pick me up here tomorrow?”“YES! SCORE! I mean— great, that’s great Jackie. See you tomorrow.”“Bye Michael.” She put down the phone and laughed. “We’re mean … but he did that one to himself, trying to trick us.”“You got that right.” Steven looked a little angry again, but the promise of revenge calmed him down again. It had been a good idea to ask him about all this, so he wouldn’t feel left out or betrayed again. She leaned in to kiss him again, when her eyes fell on the clock on the wall. “Shit! I’m going to be late!” she sprang up and grabbed her things. “Come on Steven. Hurry up!”“Yeah, yeah…”
The next day Kelso is driving his van. Donna is sitting next to him and Eric's in the back.
Kelso chuckles: “Well. Okay. Now that we're all in the van and you guys can't change your mind, I just want you to know that we're not exactly on the way to my uncle's fabulous cabin in the woods. It's really more of an ice shack.”Donna turned her head to him: “Did you say ice shack?”
Kelso keeps chuckling. “Hmm? Yeah. Oh, and, uh, the hot tub … It's really more of a garbage can. Oh, but it's also the bathroom, so-“
Donna, angry about this development, ordered: “Kelso, turn this van around!”
“No, Donna, wait. Is there beer?” Eric asked.
“Tons. Hey, and we don't even need a refrigerator... 'cause it's so freakin' cold.” Kelso answered self-satisfied.
“Paradise.”
Kelso nodded. “Yeah. Oh, and, uh, before we pick up Jackie... I just want to make sure everybody knows what this trip is about.”
“The fabulous hot-tub toilet?” Donna asked sarcastically.“No” Kelso denied, “Eric, tell her about my master plan.”
“Oh. Yeah. See, Kelso, when you start a sentence with the words ‘master plan’, I just kind of know it's gonna be stupid, so I just naturally tune out.” Eric declined.
“Okay, well, my master plan is...Eric! Pay attention!” Kelso shouted disgruntled. “This is about a romantic double date. It's you and Donna and me and Jackie.”
“Kelso, you do know you're not actually dating Jackie, right?” Donna asked disbelieving.
“That's why it's a secret double date.” Kelso confided. “See, I told Jackie that the whole
gang was coming, but then I didn't invite Hyde, especially not Fez. He's all over
Jackie.”
“Look. I'm not doing this. Turn this van around!” Donna demanded. She didn’t saw the problem in Fez, she couldn’t believe that Kelso still didn’t take Hyde and Jackie’s seriously and thought it was some kind of trick to make him jealous or something.
“No! I need you guys. See, if you're there...You guys are, like, the perfect
couple. And-And if you're there then, I can just copy all the sissy, loser things that Eric does for you.” Kelso explained, really not seeing that what he was doing was wrong.
Eric laughed: “I really do enjoy your sissy, loser things. Yeah, like when I had first dibs on that seat, but I took the hump. It's a small price to pay to keep my lady happy.”
Kelso nodded excitingly. ”Exactly. I want to be that dork.” Then he spotted something in the mirror and sped up.
“Hmm. Kelso, why are you speeding up?” Eric wondered.
“I gotta beat this light.”
“Why?” Donna asked.
“I just- I gotta!” He interrupted himself because he had to step on the breaks at the last second, making them squeal. “Damn it!” he cursed.
Not two seconds later the door opens and Fez jumps in, right on Donna's lap.
He’s panting: “What are you doing? I've been chasing you for six blocks.”
“I'm sorry, buddy. I didn't see you.” Kelso answered.
“Yeah, nice try. I know all about your master plan. Now drive, you sneaky
son of a bitch.” Fez bit out.
“What the hell?!” Kelso shouted, when Hyde jumped into the back of the van behind Jackie.
He should be saying that. He couldn’t believe that Kelso actually had the guts to try and seduce his girlfriend on a trip away from him. That he would even ask her! He wanted to go and beat the crap out of him yesterday, but his shocked and a little scared face was worth the wait. That idiot really thought his plan would be working.Donna and Forman were smiling, actually they were more like grinning at them. Obviously amused that Kelso’s little plan failed. They probably hadn’t known about it until they got into the van. He couldn’t imagine Donna agreeing to something like that beforehand and … hell while Forman wasn’t Jackie’s biggest fan, he wouldn’t do that to him. He was too good of a friend for that.Fez on the other hand looked nearly as disgruntled as Kelso. From the look Kelso through the both of them he had the feeling that Fez hadn’t been invited either. Kelso really wanted Jackie all to himself. Forman and Donna were no competition for her attention, but Fez as her admirer would be in his way. And Hyde, as her boyfriend, would definitely be in his way. Ha! So Fez also found out and came anyway and now the little bastard was also pissed that Hyde was here. He must have planned on crushing Kelso’s plan and winning Jackie for himself. Now they were both pissed at him for being here, when he was the only one here who had the right to be angry. He already hated it when the guys at the bar flirted with her, but that was mostly harmless. This was different. They were his friends and still those two horny dogs were chasing his chick. He would put them in their place, all right! He and Jackie would be glued together today, he couldn’t risk letting her out of his sight.“What do you mean?” Jackie asked innocently, as if she had no idea what Kelso as talking about. He was glad she gave him to chance to freak Kelso out like this. He hated how much the other boy could rile him up sometimes, just because he was Jackie’s first boyfriend. He shouldn’t, after all she had been young and naïve, she didn’t know better. Now she did and she obviously chose him over Kelso. It still didn’t hurt to make Kelso pay a little.
“Steven picked me up at work yesterday and of course we talked about today. I mean a cabin and a hot tub? I just love stuff like that. And you know what? You forgot to call him! I mean I get it, all that planning was a little much for you alone, right? At least you managed to call the rest of us and luckily I told Steven about it. I bet you would have angry with yourself as soon as you noticed you forgot to tell your friend, right?” She let out a little laugh, patting Kelso on the head, like you would a dog.“Right…” Kelso laughed nervously.“Yeah, thanks buddy.” He said grinning, also reaching for the front seat, but he hit Kelso in the arm. The jerk would get a lot more of that later.“Ouch! Ha—hahaha. Sure.” Kelso laughed nervously, starting to drive again.“About that hot tub…” Donna began, but Kelso laughed again. This time very loud as if to cover her words and put on the radio— loud of course.“HEY! LET’S HAVE SOME MUSIC!” he shouted and drove faster.“Fine with me.” Jackie smiled, snuggling up to him and he threw an arm around her, sending not only Kelso, but also Fez a very smug grin.Kelso was clearly trying to hide where they were going, he must have told the others already since Donna tried to warn them. Little did they know that Jackie already guessed where they were going and told him about it. As if the loud music would suddenly transform the ice shack into a nice cabin as soon as they got there. Sometimes he had to wonder about Kelso’s logic, but then again his friend wasn’t known for being a genius. The rest of the drive Jackie sat in his lap and they shared little kisses, only talking to each other by whispering in the others ear. Not that anyone would have heard them over the music anyway. Forman and Donna went with the program, exchanging amused glances with them while hey hold hands and flirted with each other. This left a very pissed off Kelso to drive the car and a silent Fez, who sat in the back of the van with them. He refused to look at them, except for throwing Hyde a poisonous look now and then.To make it short: He had a lot of fun on the drive.
When they finally arrived at their destination, everything around them was white. Ice was everywhere and when they left the van he was glad that Jackie put blankets in their bag, which they could use later. He doubted it was much warmer in the ice shack. The frozen lake was surrounded by trees in the distance, but Kelso parked directly in front of the little wood house.“You brought me to an outhouse?” Jackie asked with distaste, as if she didn’t already know what to expect. She was a pretty good actress. Of course it could also be that she earnestly didn’t like the ice shack, despite knowing what was coming.Eric came closer to them: “Actually, Jackie...” he bangs on the can next to him, “That's the outhouse.”
Kelso tried to save the situation. “No! No, it's an ice shack, for fishing. I...This is gonna be a blast. I me- It is so beautiful out here. Plus, I brought lotion.” He failed miserably of course.
“Ooh, it's kinda cold.” Donna interrupted, before Hyde could kick Kelso’s ass for even mentioning the use of lotion to Jackie.
Eric took off his jacket and handed it to his girlfriend. “Here, take my jacket.”
“I love you.” She said
“God, we are such the ... perfect couple.” Eric commented. It was clear they were messing with Kelso’s head.
Jackie shivered a little next to him. “I'm cold too.” She complained.
“Well, damn, Jackie. I can't control the weather!” Kelso said rudely. That guy really didn’t need help to destroy his chances with Jackie. He’d done it before and he would always do it again, but now Hyde wouldn’t let him get another chance.“Here, Jackie, take my coat.” Fez —the thorn in his side— offered.
Jackie smiled at their foreign friend. “Ohh, thanks, Fez”
For a moment it looked like she would take him up on his offer, but then she shook her head. “It’s not necessary though. I brought blankets. For the emergency that we wouldn’t have enough wood to keep the fires going in the cabin or something like that. I guess we can use them now.” With that she gave Steven another kiss, only this time she made it last longer, throwing her arms around his neck, pressing into him.Wrapping his arms around her, he could feel little tremors shaking her body. She was cold, but she still wouldn’t take Fez’ jacket. She also prolonged her time outside just to kiss him, fully aware that the others were watching them. If he listened carefully he could practically hear Kelso grinding his teeth. Damn, his girl was good.He held her closer to warm her up while he deepened the kiss. Their tongues playing together things got a little heated. To himself he could admit that he used some dirty tricks to make her moan. It was petty, but it wasn’t like he was only doing it for their audience, he also did it because Jackie was hot like hell and he wanted to make her feel good. Of course, he also enjoyed it himself. When they had to catch their breath, he let her go off her. Jackie’s face was a little red from embarrassment, but she smiled at him with some kind of wonder in her eyes. Finally she cleared her throat and went back to the van to grab her bag. He really enjoyed the view when she bent over to get it. Sadly so did Kelso and Fez. Assholes. He barely noticed Forman and Donna picking up their own game after their little display.“So, sweetie, what do you want to do?” Eric asked.
Donna smiled diligently as she answered: “Whatever you want to do, honey.”
“I want to go inside.”
“That's what I want to do too.” Donna gushed.
Eric let out a fake gasp: “Oh, my God! Let's go!”
They went inside and Jackie followed them, leaving Hyde to close the behind him. From the outside. Now he was alone with his two bonehead friends who were facing each other, not realising that he hadn’t followed Jackie inside yet. At least that’s the only explanation he had for the dumb conversation that followed.Kelso had his eyes fixed on Fez and his look wasn’t friendly. “Hey, what the hell was that jacket business, man? Uh, you're making me look bad.”“Look, Kelso, you are my good, good friend but I will stop at nothing to win Jackie and if you're in my way, I will destroy you.” He threatened.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” he asked, not bothering to hide his bad mood.“AH. Hyde yo-you’re still here my friend. Can I say your sunglasses look very good with the snow?” Fez laughed uneasily, trying to change the subject.“Yeah, Hyde man. Isn’t the ice shack great?” Kelso asked, taking a step back. His first smart move today.“Whatever. Listen to me you two. I know you didn’t invite me on purpose Kelso and I know that you found out about it, but instead of telling me about it you planned on using this opportunity to get closer to Jackie yourself Fez.” He said.He saw them flailing, trying to defend themselves but he hold his hand up to stop them. “Shut up! I don’t want to hear your excuses, you just confirmed it. I heard you talking to each other. I’m gonna tell you what we’re going to do now. You two are going to stop chasing after my girl, unless you want my fists to chase your faces on a daily basis.”“Hey! That’s not fair Hyde, she was my girlfriend first!” Kelso exclaimed.“Everyone makes mistakes Kelso. You’re hers and the key word here is: ‘was’. She isn’t your girlfriend anymore. She’s mine. You hear me? M.I.N.E. So keep your paws and everything else off her. You did nothing but hurt her over and over again anyway.” He said.It may sound cruel, but it was the truth. Kelso just had to accept the fact that Jackie wasn’t his girlfriend anymore. All his excuses and promises wouldn’t work on her anymore. It wasn’t only that, Jackie always had to be there for Kelso, but with all that was happening in her life, Jackie needed someone to take care of her for a change. The other boy was ill equipped for that.“That’s right. Jackie is a fair skinned goddess. She needs to be cherished and caressed. You never appreciated her!” Fez piped in.“You won’t caress anything on Jackie and the only thing you cherish better be your friendship with her and nothing else, Fez.” he said, turning to his foreign friend now.“Hyde, like Kelso you are my very good friend, but none of you will ever be able to love Jackie like I do. I’d kiss the ground she walks on and you know it! Why did you have to take my princess from me? She finally got over the doofus, she should have turned to the Fez!”“She turned to me, man. She likes me. Why would she turn to you? Because you danced with her once?”“She also liked my kiss the best!” Fez exclaimed, but there was doubt in his eyes. After their mini make out session a few minutes ago, he didn’t seem so sure anymore.“No. She liked you kiss better than Kelso’s, which … doesn’t say much to be honest.”“HEY! I’m the most handsome, so of course I’m the best kisser here.” Kelso protested. He rolled his eyes at this. “Dude, did you hear her moments ago? I win, hands down. Whatever. That’s not the problem here. Fact is: She isn’t your girlfriend anymore and truthfully? She never really was. You always had to have someone on the side and she was chasing an image of you that never existed, man. How much of a relationship is that? You want her because you can’t have her. Even if you got her back, you would just cheat on her again. Give it up already.”“You—that! I—damn it, Hyde! Why? Why did it have to be Jackie? You’re my friend and you go for my ex? That’s— friends don’t do that?”“No, they invite your girlfriend to get her back instead, huh? That’s worse, don’t you think?” he spit out and Kelso flinched. He couldn’t deny what he tried today.“And I didn’t go after her, man. She came to me and I took a long time before I agreed. Unlike you two, I didn’t do anything wrong here.”“Yeah maybe now, but you tried to do break up me and Jackie before. How is this different?” Kelso countered, referring to the whole Laurie debacle.“Argh I told you before, I didn’t try to break you up. How can you even compare our situations? Jackie and I are good right now. But back then? Damn it man, you were cheating on her with Laurie of all, and I thought it was an asshole move, I admit that. But I would never rat you out, because you’re my friend. I didn’t agree with what you were doing, so maybe I enjoyed your squirming more than I should. In the end, you brought it all on yourself. Everyone always warned you to stay away from Laurie, to stop cheating on Jackie. Hell, we warned you long before, with Pam Macey. You just never listened and you never learned.” He countered. He hadn’t exactly been Jackie’s fan back then, but all that cheating was just rotten.“That’s exactly it! I just wanted to safe her from Kelso’s master plan.” Fez sulked.“Fez … man. Jackie is your friend, nothing more. It doesn’t matter if you follow her like a goddamn puppy. You’re right, none of us worships her like you do, but putting her on a pedestal and showering her with compliments is only superficial. Jackie doesn’t need that. There’s more to her than that. She needs a challenge. You two would never work out. You’re just infatuated with her because she’s pretty and forgives you for your perverted outbursts. Don’t ruin your friendship by pursuing her seriously. You could really lose her like this.” He warned. Now it was Fez’ turn to look down, of course he didn’t want that.God, he hated talks like this, avoided them actually. But the world was against him. Jackie, Bud, Kelso and Fez. The last weeks were full of serious conversations like this. He wanted to turn his back and ignore thinks, but muffing out wouldn’t do him any good in the long run. He just needed to get this over with. Preferably, before he lost his temper for good.“Okay … this is how things are going down from now on: I know you both will always make a pass at Jackie, some stupid comment, a bad touch. You always do it to Donna and she’s dating Forman. It’s just in your nature, you can’t help yourself. I can live with that. I’ll punch you for it of course, but in the end of the day, we’re still friends.” He said. It was true, that’s how they worked.“But if one of you ever tries to break Jackie and me up again, I’m going to come after you. The only thing you accomplish is hurting her and pissing me off. I’ll make you pay for it and then it’s over, I don’t need friends like that and Jackie definitely doesn’t. We won’t be friends anymore when something like this happens again. You understand? Think about that before you try something stupid.”Kelso and Fez both stared at him like he grew a second head. Their mouths were standing open in shock. It looked idiotic, but part of him could understand. He was the guy who never let a girl come between him and his friends, yet here he was, seriously putting Jackie before them. There were a lot of things that could go wrong between them in the future. They were both so fucked up and their lives appeared to be in order now, but were actually chaotic. He knew the risks, he still wanted to try. They finally nodded and he sighed. “Good. Glad we could clear that up. No need to talk about it anymore.”He knew the shock wouldn’t last. They would always hit on Jackie and Donna, and every other hot girl for that matter. Just like he told them, that’s just how they were. A few kicks and punches, a good burn here and there, and all were forgotten. Nevertheless, he hoped they took the other part of what he said seriously. Competition is one thing, but actively coming between a guy and his girl that were happy together was just wrong man. Forman would agree with him.“Let’s get inside. I’m freezing my ass off.”
Inside the shack, Donna and Eric were huddled under one of her blankets and she had them in a laughing fit. She just told them how she knew Michael’s uncle didn’t own a cabin, but this shack and how Steven was with her when he called. She curled up under her own blanket and laughed with them.
“I got to tell you, Kelso’s face was great when Fez jumped into the van, but it was even better when he saw Hyde with you.” Eric chuckled.“You know who also had a funny look? Fez. They were both pretty disgruntled.” Donna threw in.“Yes, I saw it. Seriously what did they think would happen here?” She knew of course, what Michael had hoped and how Fez had planned to destroy his plan with his little game, but this time was different. She wasn’t single here. “They know I’m dating Steven.”“They know they just don’t want to.” Donna said.Eric finally stopped laughing. “Guess Kelso is lonely and Fez is always one for high hopes. They’ll come around … eventually.”“I hope so.” Jackie sighed. She really didn’t want another contest for her affection, it blew up in her face once, didn’t need to have it twice. It was silent in the shack and she noticed that it had been a while since they stepped inside. What was taking them so long outside? She hoped they weren’t fighting.Just as she resolved to go outside again the door opened and Steven stepped inside, Michael and Fez following him slowly. They were all exceptionally quiet, but no one appeared to be hurt. She took that as a good sign and didn’t ask any questions.
For now …
She lifted the blanket for Steven to slip under it next to her. When they were snuggled together, she threw the remaining blanket over to Fez. “You and Michael will have to share, I only found three.”“Now what are we going to do here, since bathing in a hot tub is definitely out?” Donna asked.“Ice fishing. What else?” Michael answered, handing out fishing rods.“Oh joy …” Steven mumbled next to her, taking a fishing rod.Giggling she shook her head no. She would just watch. She turned to kiss Steven on his cheek. It may sound mundane and ice fishing was definitely boring, but it was still much better than the last time she was here. She had Steven with her and Fez and Michael behaved very well, no snide comments, nothing. What did Steven say to them? Well she would find out eventually. She enjoyed the excuse of the cold for cuddling with her boyfriend. She hadn’t forgotten their little kissing session, Steven really blew her mind sometimes with something as simple as a kiss. Maybe she could get a little bit more of that later. For now she would revel in their closeness and later … well later she would make sure that Michael found no other reason to jump up and down in his car.She would safe his car and would safe them all from walking home, it was a damn long way in the cold!
