Daryl waited until Hershel was outside in the garden before he asked Bob to check up on Beth. He asked the doctor to keep everything a secret, for now.
Bob had Beth lie down on the bunk, then he measured Beth's stomach, and felt around her abdomen. "Yup. Congratulations. I'm guessing you're about fifteen or sixteen weeks along. You need to get plenty of rest, and we'll make sure you get extra portions of food."
Daryl helped Beth back to the sitting position, and wrapped his arm around her. He gave her a kiss on the forehead. Bob leaned against the wall, and said "Do you guys have any questions?"
They both had a million questions; how to manage a pregnancy through the end of the world, how to deliver a baby, what happens if there's a problem, how are they gonna tell Hershel, and what to do from this point on. Beth was the first one to talk, "is sex okay?" Daryl chuckled, and Bob looked embarrassed.
"Yes, sex if fine until you're about 35 weeks. We'll monitor you as closely as we can, but keep in mind that we can't do much here."
"Please don't tell Daddy. Not yet."
"No problem. That's none of my business anyway."
The three talked for a while longer, until Hershel came in from a long morning farming. The Atlanta heat was brutal that day. Bob quietly left the cell, leaving the privacy curtain open as a hint that Daryl not stay long, alone with Beth, in the cell.
"We're gonna need so much stuff." Beth said.
"Well, we have everything we got for Lori. That's gonna be tough for her though."
"This is gonna sound mean, but I'm glad we're already on the ground floor." Beth remarked. "I mean, I don't wanna fall."
"Yea. That's good." Daryl said, thinking of how he's going to convince her switch rooms with Merle, who is on the top row, in order to have the privacy a growing family needs.
"We should go out...they might get suspicious if we're alone in here. It's almost time to start dinner anyway." Beth said, with a smile.
Daryl nodded, and followed her out of the cell. His mind was spinning; his father was such an asshole, his mother a bitch. How the fuck will he be able to be a good father? How will everyone react? And how will he tell Beth that he wants to marry her?
At dinnertime everyone was in a good mood, talking about their day. It was mostly the same old story; Hershel would farm, some would take watch, some would clean up inside and keep track of everything in the storage room. But it was as close to normal as dinner conversation could get. Daryl was sitting right next to Beth, keeping a hand on her leg the entire time. He gave her half of his dinner, she initially refused, but one look he gave her told her not to protest.
Later, Lori took Beth into her own cell, and gave her a hug when she heard the news was confirmed. Beth told her friend that she was terrified. Lori was heartbroken, thinking of what could have been, but put on a brave face for Beth. She talked to her about what to expect, everything from back morning sickness to back pain. She said that Daryl seemed very attentive and loving, but if he ever changed, come see her. She'll need more emotional support than she thinks she will. She'll support her no matter what. Neither woman knew that Rick was about to walk by, but stopped near the cell door and heard everything. He grimaced when he thought of the way he acted. Lori asked if Daryl talked to Hershel yet, and Beth said no. Lori nodded, and said she'll get together with Carol and make sure Daryl gets cleaned up with a haircut and shave. She told the younger woman, "Now, the best thing you can do for yourself is rest. Fortunately, we already have a safe place. Get as much rest as you can, fatigue hits you like a ton of bricks. Nobody's done a run for months, so we don't know what it's like out there, but I think in the storage room you'll find some of my maternity clothes. You won't start to need those around the fifth month, but they're there. We'll wait to set up the crib the guys got. Let you dad have the news sink in first. We'll take care of you. I promise."
Beth gave Lori a tight hug, and had a wide smile when she thanked her. She left the cell, bumping into Rick on the way out. Rick gave her a hug when he heard the news, and she went off to find Daryl. Rick walked into his cell, to see Lori sitting on the bunk and staring at the ground.
"Hey" he said, breaking her out of her trance.
"Hey" she replied, doing her best to give him a smile.
He walked over and sat next to her. His hand found hers, and he wrapped his fingers around hers. She was holding back tears. He released her hand to wrap his arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. He whispered "You know I love you, right?" All she could do was nod. She was crying silently, her whole body shaking. He knew. He knew why. They sat together for a while, both crying over what happened in the two years that they wasted, and the almost three years since they heard Carl's voice.
