The three of them headed back to their motel after a long hard job in Indiana. Dean was the one who wanted to take the job that at first didn’t seem like much. Both Sam and Liam had been skeptical, but Dean had talked them into it. Of course, his ex girlfriend Lisa just also happened to live there. Liam just barely restrained the urge to punch something when Dean wanted to drop by Lisa’s house to say hello. Something had been brewing inside him ever since he saw Dean kiss that lust demon, and this was really not helping.
It turned out they’d dropped in on a birthday party for Lisa’s son Ben. Dean introduced him to Lisa as his friend, and that stung pretty bad. Liam said nothing though, just stood on the sidelines. He saw how Dean looked at Ben when it seemed there was a possibility the boy was his. It was like Dean wanted Ben to be his. Liam’s day was just getting worse and worse.
As it turned out, there was a job there. There was a changeling epidemic. Once they figured that out Dean was able find out that the real kids were being kept in unfinished house. They rescued the kids and destroyed the mother changeling with fire. Once they did that all the changeling children died with her and the real kids were given back to their mothers.
Dean lowered himself onto their bed and sighed. “What a day.”
“You know what,” Liam swallowed hard. “Why don’t you go stay with Sam tonight? I wanna be alone.”
Dean looked up at him with an annoyed look. “You’ve been a frigid bitch all day. What the hell crawled up your ass now?” he growled.
“You did, you son of a bitch!” Liam shouted.
“Now what the hell did I do?” Dean shouted back, standing up.
Liam stood there shaking, his arms crossed. “You wanted so bad to investigate a table saw accident that just happened to be where an ex girlfriend lived. You tell me you love me so much, but around her I’m just a friend? That’s just… Never mind, I’ll just get my own room.”
When Liam turned to storm out Dean grabbed his wrist and dragged him back. “Like hell you will!”
Liam slapped Dean hard and Dean shoved him against the wall, gripping his wrists tight. “Don’t you fucking dare!” Dean got right in his face.
“Admit it, you’re ashamed of me! Sure, you’ll fuck me every chance you get, but a pretty lady comes around and suddenly I’m a friend!” Liam spat and kneed Dean in the crotch.
Dean doubled over in pain for a second before punching Liam in the cheek. Liam tried to leave again but Dean grabbed him and threw him down on the bed, pinning him there. “You’re only alive right now because I sold my soul to a demon you freaking idiot! What more do you fucking want from me?”
Liam went limp and started to cry. “Oh no, please don’t start that,” Dean begged as his features softened.
“I need to know that you’re not gonna change your mind,” Liam sniffed, tears streaming down the side of his face.
“Why would you even think that?” Dean asked as he got off his mate and sat on the bed beside him.
“Because,” Liam wiped his eyes and sat up, rubbing his wrist. “All your life you were straight until you met me. You said something in your brain rewired itself. How do I know it’s not gonna wire itself back the way it was someday? How do I know you won’t wake up tomorrow and decide to dump me and go chase Lisa, who you just had to see and not tell you are involved with me? Dean, this has been in the back of my mind since we got together. It was brought right to the forefront when I saw how much you seemed to enjoy kissing that lust demon. Don’t lie to me, I know you liked it.”
“Liam, if this was bothering you why didn’t you say something sooner? I mean, yeah, part of me liked kissing a hot chick. I’m a red blooded American male, what exactly do you want? And yeah, I was, and still am very physically attracted to Lisa. That guy in Chicago, tell me he didn’t make your insides melt.”
“I can’t tell you that because, yes, I was very attracted to him,” Liam looked way from Dean and at the floor.
“Alright, so it’s okay for you to be attracted to another person, but perfectly reasonable for you to lose your shit when I’m attracted to someone else? How in your fucked up head does that make any sense?”
“It’s just different,” Liam insisted as he looked back Dean.
“But how?”
“Because I told Ethan I have a boyfriend, and I’ve never not been gay, okay? I’m very insecure about your homosexuality. When you told Lisa I was just a friend, that hurt worse than when you clocked me a minute ago.” He gingerly touched his now swollen cheek.
Dean stroked Liam’s hair. “I’ve already explained this to you. I fell in love with the person you are on the inside. The physical attraction just kinda followed I guess. I don’t really understand it, and I’ve just been going with it. I tell strangers because they don’t know me from Adam, and they make their assumptions and I never see them again. Me not telling Lisa had nothing to do with me being ashamed of you, because I’m not. It’s because I don’t fully understand the situation I find myself in. I have a history with her. It was only a weekend almost nine years ago, but still, I was straight as an arrow then, or I thought was. I don’t know… Me not knowing is the point I’m trying to make. It was easier for me to not have to stand there and try to explain to someone else what I can’t explain to myself. All I know for absolute sure is I love you very much. I’m sorry that hurt you. And for the record, I’m very sorry I hit you. It’s just kind of a knee jerk reaction to getting nailed in the junk.”
Liam sighed and leaned in to rest his head against Dean’s shoulder. “Apology accepted. And I’m sorry I slapped you and nailed you in the junk.”
“Apology accepted,” Dean kissed the topped of his head.
“But I also saw the way you looked at Ben when you thought he might be yours. I could tell you really were disappointed when she told you he most definitely wasn’t. Dean, I can’t give you kids like a woman could. It’s biologically impossible.”
“I know,” Dean nodded. “It’s true, I won’t insult you by lying to you. Now that there’s a short time limit on my life I’m starting to regret things like not having kids. My dad died with Sam and I as his legacy, and I don’t have that. It actually crossed my mind that we could get a surrogate, but there are two major problems with that. One, it’s expensive as hell, and the money we got we need for food, gas, and motel rooms. Two, we bounce around from place to place killing monsters and demons. We can’t go bringing a baby into that madness.”
“A woman could stay home and raise a baby while you hunted,” Liam pointed out.
“So could you if it came down to it, but I’d miss you like crazy, we need the help, and you practically threw a fit when I told you to stay put until your ribs healed. Liam, I’ve accepted that things are the way are. I didn’t fall in love with a woman, I fell in love with you. I’m gonna die in a little less than ten months and I’m never gonna have kids. But you’re alive and with me now, so I don’t regret it. In fact, come on,” Dean stood up and motioned for Liam to follow.
“Where are we going?” Liam asked.
“We’re going back to Lisa’s.”
“No, you don’t have to,” Liam shook his head.
“If it upset you that much, then yes, I do. Get your ass in the car.”
Liam gave him a small smile and followed him out to the car. They drove to Lisa’s house and knocked on her door. She looked a little confused when she answered the door. “Dean. What brings you back?”
“Liam here,” Dean motioned to him. “I told you he was my friend, but it has been brought to my attention that that really upset him, so I came back to right the wrong.”
“He’s not your friend?” she looked really confused now.
“No, he’s my boyfriend.”
“Wow,” she blinked. “Yeah, if I had a boyfriend that told someone he had a past with that we were just friends, that would really upset me too. But your boyfriend? Wow… I really didn’t expect that,” she gave him a little smile.
“Yeah, me either really. I guess I’m not as straight as I thought I was. We met and it just kinda hit me out of left field.” He reached to rub Liam’s back. “Anyway, I just came to tell you that to make him feel better.”
“Okay, well, wait a minute, his cheek wasn’t swollen like that before. What happened?”
Dean sighed and looked at the ground for a moment. “Well, you can’t tell because he’s been really uncharacteristically quiet around you, but we’re both very passionate people, and we had a fight that got really, really out of hand...”
Her eyes narrowed. “Are you trying to say that you hit your partner?”
Dean’s shoulders dropped. “Yes. I’m not proud of it, but he got me in the family jewels, and I lost it for a split second. Part of me coming here and telling you that I’m his now was to make it up to him for that too.”
“I really shouldn’t have kneed him in the family jewels,” Liam sighed and shook his head. “We both lost it a little.”
“You lost it a little. From the look of your face Dean lost it a lot,” she shook her head.
“It’s really okay,” Liam tried to assure her. “Like he said, we’re both very passionate people, and things got really out of hand really fast. I slapped him first and put fuel on the fire. I’ve been hurt a lot worse from opening my big mouth.”
“You shouldn’t make excuses for him.”
“No, he shouldn’t,” Dean agreed. “But the man is a saint. That’s one of the things I love about him.” He wrapped an arm around Liam and hugged him. “This was our first major fight and something really bad happened. Anyway, we’re gonna go.”
“Okay,” she nodded. “Bye,” she shut the door.
They drove back to the motel and got ready for bed. “Your face looks like it really hurts,” Dean frowned and kissed his other cheek.
“It does, but as usual, it’s my own stupid fault.”
Dean shook his head. “I am not your father...”
“Umm… I know that. Our arrangement would be a little gross if you were.”
“No, what I mean is you said he abused you. I don’t wanna do that because you don’t deserve it, but I did, I put my hands on you in anger.”
Liam shrugged. “I put hands and knees on you in anger too. You’re right, I really do bring it on myself. I pushed my father’s buttons and I attacked you when I got pissed.”
Dean sighed and shook his head. “Just come here,” he said as he climbed into bed.
Liam got into the bed and let Dean pull him close. “I really do love you, and I am so very sorry.”
“I know,” Liam said as he nuzzled close and closed his eyes.
The next morning Sam knocked on their door. Dean answered it and gave his brother a smile. “Hey, little brother, we don’t really feel like going out for breakfast this morning. Could you run and pick something up?”
“Umm.. yeah, I guess,” Sam nodded, looking a little confused and concerned. “Everything okay in there?” He poked his head in to check and saw Liam sitting on the bed. “Whoa...” he said at the sight of his face. “What happened in here last night?”
Dean sighed. “I told Lisa Liam was only a friend because I didn’t want to have to explain. That upset him and we had our first fight over it. Things got physical.”
“You mean you hit each other?”
“He nailed me in the junk, and I saw red and I slugged him, yes.” Dean nodded.
“Dean-”
“Sam, I know… Until his face heals I’m gonna feel like a pile of shit every time I look at him. I really don’t wanna get into it. Just please go get breakfast. Oh, and don’t tell Natalie. I don’t need the third degree from her on top of it.”
“Okay,” Sam sighed. “But you do know that if any of us thinks about it around her she’ll know.”
“Then don’t ever think about it again. Let’s just all completely forget it ever happened and move on. I apologized, he accepted, that should be the end of it.”
Sam went and got breakfast. They ate in silence and then got in the car to discuss where to go next. Suddenly a phone started ringing. It wasn’t any of theirs. “Must be Dad’s,” Dean said motioning to the glove box.
“Dad’s?” Sam raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, I keep it charged up in case any of his contacts call to ask for help.”
Sam answered it quick. As it turned out John had a storage facility in Buffalo, New York that had been broken into. “I guess that’s where we’re going,” Dean said as he fired up the engine and pulled onto the road.
They found the place and went to investigate. The place was well warded. There was a trip wire and blood on the floor. Whoever had broken in and been shot. In the back in a little caged area were lots of weapons and warded boxes that no doubt housed cursed items. “This looks like a dumping ground,” Liam commented as he looked around.
“Yeah, it does,” Dean agreed while he looked the boxes over. His flashlight beam hit an empty space on the shelf where the dust wasn’t there in a rectangular shape. “And one of the boxes is gone.”
They managed to get a look at the security footage, and the dumb ass thieves didn’t even bother to cover the license plate on their car. Sam tracked them down and they went to retrieve the stolen object. They broke in guns drawn, only to find the box had been opened. It was a rabbit’s foot of all things. They tried to get it back but something really weird happened. No matter what they did they couldn’t touch the one guy. Freaky things happened until they were all three unarmed and on the floor. Sam managed to grab the rabbit’s foot and suddenly the tides changed and the thieves wound up unconscious on the floor.
They left and called Bobby to see if he knew anything about it. He did. It was a genuine cursed rabbit’s foot made by a hoodoo priestess to punish people. While it was in a person’s possession they would have incredible luck. As soon as they lost it however, their luck would turn so bad it would kill them. Sam had touched it. Dean of course, ran off and bought a bunch of scratch off lottery tickets and gave them to Sam to scratch off. There was a pretty good prize on every single one of them. Dean happily cashed them and they went to get something to eat.
Just Sam’s luck, they were the one millionth customers at the restaurant. Balloons fell and pictures were taken. Their meal was free. Dean celebrated by pigging out on an ice cream sundae while Sam decided to do his own research on the rabbit’s foot. A waitress came up to give them more coffee and she spilled a little by Sam. She mopped it up while flirting with him and walked away. Sam went to take a drink and spilled it all over himself. He stood and collided with a waiter who had a tray full of food.
Sam checked his pocket and the rabbit’s foot was gone. They ran out to try and find who took it but Sam tripped over his own feet and fell. Liam helped him up and they walked back to the car. They went back to the thieves’ apartment to find out who hired them only to find out that the one who had touched the rabbit’s foot had been killed in some freak accident. Dean managed to get it out of the other one who hired them.
When they were walking out of the building Bobby called Dean. Sam stepped in a wad of gum. He went to try and scrape it off on a broken sewer grate but Liam stopped him. “So much shit could go wrong with that. Let me.” He knelt down and took Sam’s shoe off him, scraping off the gum himself.
Sam suddenly lost his balance and fell. Liam tried to catch him, but Sam ended up falling on him and the blond bashed the side of his head on the sewer grate. “Oh, Liam, I’m sorry,” Sam frowned when he saw Liam’s bloody temple.
“It’s okay,” Liam insisted. “You’re just very accident prone now.”
Dean hung up and turned around, frowning at Liam. “Babe, you’re hurt.”
“Just a scratch. It was an accident.”
“Well, if we can get the rabbit’s foot back, Bobby found a heavy duty cleansing spell that might destroy it. He also thinks he knows who took it. We were right, she gave the thieves a fake name. Her real name is Bela Talbot.”
They got Sam in the car and drove back to the motel. Bobby called again to tell them he found Bela in Queens. Dean parked and turned to Sam. “I’m going to get the rabbit’s foot. You two are staying here so Sam’s bad luck doesn’t get us all killed.”
They walked into Dean and Liam’s room and Dean pulled a chair into the middle of the room. “Sam, sit.” Sam sighed and lowered himself into the chair. “Okay, Sammy, don’t do anything. Just sit there. Don’t even scratch your nose. Liam, your very important job is to watch him.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “Watch him do nothing?”
“Yes, make sure nothing happens to either of you. I’m counting on you to protect him from himself.”
“Okay,” Liam sighed and sat on the bed.
Dean left and Liam and Sam just stared at each other. “How’s your head?” Sam asked.
Liam shrugged. “It hurts, but I’ll live.”
“Your cheek looks a little better.”
Liam looked away for a moment. “I thought we were going to forget about that.”
“Yeah, that’s what Dean said, but geez, Liam. I know my brother has always had a little bit of a temper problem, but I never thought he’d...”
“When you put somebody with a temper together with somebody who has a big mouth sparks are bound to fly once in a while. This little ding is nothing compared to what my father used to do to me for breathing too loud.”
Sam’s eyebrows raised. “Your dad used to beat you?”
“Yeah, I told Dean, but I guess you didn’t know. My mom died giving birth to me, and my dad hated me for it. Hell, I was thrown through a window at three years old.”
Sam shook his head. “My god… No father should ever do that. If Dean knew about your past and he still hit you...”
“Please, just drop it. I’m sure he wasn’t thinking about my past when he swung at me. All that was on his mind was the pain between his legs, which I caused. I’m just some kind violence magnet.”
“Did you have any siblings?”
“Yeah, I had a brother who was nine years older. He took care of me. He tried to protect me from our dad, and patched me up as best he could when his efforts weren’t successful. That actually inspired him to become a doctor. You and I are alike in that way, we had older brothers that looked out for us. Hey, you think if I had developed a thing for you instead of Dean that you and I would have gotten together?”
Sam chuckled and shook his head. “I don’t think so. I care for you as person, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t see myself doing that. Although, I have to be honest, you’ve got me curious.”
“Curious, huh?” Liam smiled.
“Yeah. I mean, I’m not in any way attracted to guys, I just sometimes find myself wondering what it would be like. You know, to kiss a guy and stuff. When you kissed me back in Nebraska, it was a little interesting.”
Liam sat back and started telling Sam funny stories about his childhood. Young Liam had gotten himself into quite a bit a trouble. Sam’s sides hurt from laughing. “You really are trouble,” Sam chuckled.
Liam sighed and stood up. “If you think you can look after yourself for a minute, nature calls.”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Go ahead and go, then it’s my turn I think.”
Liam went to the bathroom and suddenly the air conditioner in the wall started making grinding noises and started smoking. “Oh, come on!” Sam’s head fell back. When he looked again it was on fire. “Liam!”
Liam came out. “What?” he asked before noticing the flames. “Oh, shit!” he rushed over and grabbed the comforter off the bed to extinguish the fire. He waved his hand to push away the smoke from his face. Then he opened the window to let some fresh air in. Two men were standing just outside the window and they looked over at him. The older light haired man saw Sam and a wide grin appeared on his face.
Liam quickly closed the window and the curtains, and ran over to Dean’s bag to grab a gun. “I really don’t like the way he just looked at you.”
“Me either.” Sam agreed. “Another demon you think?”
“I don’t know,” Liam swallowed hard and grabbed some holy water just in case.
“Open up!” the older man shouted as he pounded on the door.
“Go fuck yourself!” Liam shouted back.
The door was forced open and Liam threw some holy water at the older man who stepped inside with his own gun drawn. Nothing happened. “I’m not possessed you idiot,” the man growled, wiping the water from his face. The second man came in armed and they both aimed at Liam.
“Liam, don’t do anything stupid,” Sam warned.
“Yeah, Liam,” the older man smirked. “Don’t do anything stupid. You’re outgunned and we don’t have anything against you.”
Liam sighed and slowly set the gun on the dresser. The older man grabbed a roll of duct tape out of his jacket pocket and turned to his companion. “Tie up the other one.”
The older man started binding Sam with the duct tape while the companion pushed Liam down on the bed. The second man moved to tie Liam’s feet with rope and Liam kicked him in the face. Then when the man fell back Liam rolled off the bed and tackled the older man, punching him in the face. The two men fought to reach the older man’s discarded gun first. Just as Liam was about to take it a shot rang out and a bullet hit Liam in the upper arm. Liam hissed but grabbed the gun and shot the second man in the chest. The older man wrapped his arm around Liam’s neck from behind and squeezed while pressing his thumb into the bullet wound and forcing Liam to drop the gun as he cried in pain. “You did something really stupid, my friend,” the man whispered in his ear.
Liam was forced back on the bed and was tied up. “You know, I wasn’t gonna hurt you, but you killed my friend. Now things don’t look so good for you either.”
“Who are you, and what do you want?” Sam asked.
The man turned to Sam. “I used to think your friend Gordon sent me. He asked me to track you down and put a bullet in your brain.”
“Great,” Sam sighed. “Yeah, that sounds like Gordon.”
“But, as it turns out, I’m on a mission from God. You were part of that demon plan to open the gate weren’t you?”
“We did everything we could to stop it,” Sam argued.
“Lie! You were in on it. You know what their next move is too, don’t you?”
“No, I don't, okay? You're wrong about all of this.”
“Where are they gonna hit us next?” Sam was quiet so the man slapped him hard. “Gordon told me all about you, how you were hand picked by some demon to be part of the master plan.”
Sam sighed. “That’s over with now. The demon is dead. We killed it. Well, Liam over there killed it.”
“Liar!” the man punched Sam. “Now, no more lies. There's an army of demons out there pushing at a world already on the brink. We're on deck for the endgame here, right? So maybe, just maybe you can understand why we can't take chances.” He aimed his gun at Liam’s chest. “I think maybe I’ll make you watch me waste your friend who tried to protect you before I kill you.” Liam closed his eyes and tensed.
“Whoa, wait a minute!” Sam cried. “You said you didn’t have anything against him. Let him go, take a breath, and think about this for a minute. Whatever it is you think I am, you’re way off.”
It was then that Dean arrived, his gun drawn. “Get away from my brother and my boyfriend.”
The man kept his gun trained on Liam. “Let me guess, the pretty boy blond that shot my friend is your boyfriend. Put the gun down son, or you’ll be scrubbing his guts off the wall.”
“Oh, this thing? Okay, but you see, there's something about me that you don't know,” Dean said as he put the weapon down and picked up a pen while looking smug.
“Yeah? What would that be?”
“It's my lucky day.” Dean tossed the pen toward the man and it just happen to lodge itself in the gun barrel. “Oh my god, did you see that shot?” he laughed. “I'm amazing.” While the man tried to dislodge the pen Dean picked up the remote and threw it. It hit the man square in the forehead and knocked him out. Dean struck a pose. “I’m Batman.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “Yeah, you’re Batman,” he said sarcastically.
“Are you two okay?”
“I’m fine, but Liam was shot in the arm trying to fight off two guys with guns by himself.”
“Liam, what the hell were you thinking?” Dean shouted as he ran over to his mate to look at the wound.
“You said to protect your brother, and that’s what I was trying to do. They had put their guns down to tie us up and I thought if I could just get my hands on one of them...”
Dean sighed as he examined the bullet wound up close. “This doesn’t look too bad. I can patch it up. But do you have any idea how easily he could’ve put it in your head?” Dean kissed his forehead and Liam sighed and nodded.
Dean started untying Liam. “We can’t stay here now, we have to find a new motel. Liam, start loading up the car as best you can while I free Sam.”
Liam nodded and got up to start gathering things with his good arm. “Gordon sent these guys,” Sam said while Dean started pulling away the duct tape.
“Him again?” Dean shook his head. “And here I thought we took care of him.”
“Who’s Gordon?” Liam asked.
“He’s an overzealous hunter we ran into a while ago,” Dean explained. “Somehow he found out about Yellow Eyes’ plan, and that Sam was a part of it. He got it in his head that all the chosen kids needed to be eliminated, including Sam here. Apparently now he’s recruiting for the cause.”
“Oh,” Liam nodded. “Well, doesn’t that just suck.”
“Yes, it does, Babe. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about.”
They got everything in the car and drove to another motel. They got Sam his own room, but made him stick with them while he still had bad luck. “Okay, Babe, just let me patch you up, then we’ll destroy the rabbit’s foot.”
Liam sat on the bed and tried to stay quiet while the bullet was dug out of him. With Dean’s new found luck it came right out with ease. Then Dean bandaged his mate up and kissed him. “Do you have any pain pills left?”
“I think so,” Liam nodded.
“Good. Take one and crawl into bed. Sam and I can take care of the foot.”
Liam got up and started digging in his bag. Sam and Dean went to find a quiet field to do the cleansing ritual. They built a fire and put everything they needed in it. Then Dean dropped in the rabbit’s foot. “Goodbye incredible luck,” Dean sighed as he watched it burn. “Well, I guess we’re normal now,” he said when the fire died down.
“Guess so,” Sam nodded. “I can’t say I’m too upset about that. Umm, Dean, I know we’re in the middle of a war and all, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to go spend a few days with my girlfriend now.”
“Yeah, Sammy, we can do that,” Dean nodded. “If Liam wasn’t with us I’d probably be going nuts by now myself. You know, I think that man has natural born luck of his own.”
“Really? You think? I mean, bad stuff is constantly happening to him.”
“I know, but the stuff is never as bad as it could be. He tried to fight off two crazed guys with guns. I don’t know many people who could try that and manage to kill one and get away with only a bullet in their arm.”
“You’ve got a point. While you were gone he was entertaining me with stories about stunts he pulled as a kid. He got away with a lot of crazy shit. Well, he still wound up paying for it with his dad… Having a dad like that, that’s not lucky.”
“Yeah, but the bastard died in a fishing accident when Liam was sixteen. Justice was served and Liam was free of him.”
“I guess the universe has a way of punishing people like that. Anyway, I’m exhausted. Let’s go get some sleep.”
“Okay. When you talk to Natalie tell her we’re heading home tomorrow morning to stay for a few days.”
