Sam paced the sitting room floor with John snuggled up against crying inconsolably. “I know, buddy,” he said soothingly. “Nobody likes needles.”
“What’s wrong with him?” Dean asked.
“I took him to the doctor,” Natalie answered. “He got his first shots. As soon as they poked him he freaked and hasn’t stopped.”
“Can’t blame him,” Liam reached to stroke John’s head. “Shots hurt. He doesn’t understand it was for his own good. From his point of view Mommy took him to someone who hurt him.”
“Do you know how to make him quiet again?” Sam asked.
Liam pointed to his arm sling. “Little one handed here, but...” He reached out to manipulate the way Sam was holding John. “Okay, rock him like this,” Liam made a gesture.
Sam did as told and John slowly quieted down. “Holy… You are a freaking baby genius! How did you…?”
Liam smiled. “Experience. Lean back and soak it in.”
“Speaking of soaking things in,” Dean looked at them. “Martin contacted me. The Glenwood Springs Psychiatric Hospital has had a whole slew of suicides recently. He thinks there might be a little something to it.”
Liam’s eyes lit up. “I’ve always been told I belong in a nuthouse.”
“You do,” Dean shot him a look, “but you’re not going to this one. You’re healing, remember?”
“Look, you need someone who speaks crazy for this. I’ve healed up pretty good, and I’ve adjusted. If it makes you feel better I won’t do much more than investigate, but I am going. When I set my mind to something you can’t stop me, remember?”
“Usually to your own detriment,” Dean sighed. “But fine, whatever. Help find it, then leave the killing to us.”
Two days later they arrived in Oklahoma and sat across from Dr. Fuller, who read over a file and looked up at them. “You were referred to me by a Dr. Babar in Chicago.”
“Yep,” Dean nodded. “I don’t know what to do with my brother and my boyfriend. I don’t know if it was the water or what, but they’re both a little,” he made a crazy gesture with his finger.
The doctor looked to Sam. “Why don't you tell me how you're feeling, Alex?”
Sam sighed. “I'm fine. I mean, okay, a little depressed, I guess.”
The doctor took some notes. “Okay. Any idea why?”
Sam shrugged. “Probably because I started the apocalypse.”
“The apocalypse?” Dr. Fuller raised an eyebrow. “And you think you started it?”
“Well, yeah, I mean, I killed this demon, Lilith, and I accidentally freed Lucifer from hell. So now, he's topside, and we're trying to stop him.”
“Who is?” Dr. Fuller asked.
“All three of us,” Sam motioned to him, Dean, and Liam. “And this angel.”
“Oh, you mean, like an angel on your shoulder?”
Sam shook his head. “No. His name's Castiel. He wears a trench coat.”
Dr. Fuller took more notes. “And what about you, Jeremy?” he turned to Liam.
Liam shrugged. “I’m a little hurt that I got dragged here, but otherwise I’m fine. All I did was kill demons for them.”
“You kill demons, do you?”
Liam nodded. “Yeah, I touch possessed people and concentrate and the demon inside them burns up. Of course, the black outs bother me a little.”
“Black outs?” Dr. Fuller scribbled some more things down. “How long do these black outs typically last?”
“Not long usually. Maybe a day. The first one happened when a big demon attacked us and an angel possessed me to fight him off. I woke up the next day in the hospital, the doctors thought I got hit by a bus.”
“I see,” Dr. Fuller gave him a little smile. “How long was the longest black out?”
“Ten days.” He pointed to Dean. “He told me our angel friend, not the one in the trench coat, but the one that possesses me, he did it again to trap an archangel. That only took two days, but then for eight days I couldn’t remember who I was. I woke up in a cage with a dog collar.”
Dr. Fuller looked to Dean. “You told him that?”
“Well, yeah,” Dean answered. “That’s what happened. But see my main concern with him is he got injured fighting demons again, and last time he was injured like this he tried to kill himself. I need these two fixed up so we can get back to monster hunting.”
Dr. Fuller picked his phone up and dialed a number. “Irma, cancel my lunch.”
A little while later a nurse was leading them down the hall. “The doctor would like to keep you all under observation for a couple of days.”
“Me, too?” Dean faked looking surprised.
“Yes, Sugar,” she nodded. “The doctor thinks that would be best.”
They were each led into an exam room and checked out. They met outside wearing patient scrubs and blue robes. “I can’t believe we did this,” Dean sighed. He saw Liam looking around. “You look a little too happy you freaking psycho.”
“I’m just drinking in the irony, that’s all. We got landed in here for telling the truth. Personally, I think I could’ve scared the crap out of him. Maybe I will.”
Dean started over toward an older man who looked up at them. “Sam, Dean, wow. Wow, you boys got big. You look good. Who’s the blond?”
“My boyfriend,” Dean answered. “Long story, but he hunts with us now. He should be at home resting that arm, but once he sets his mind to something...”
“Uh, well, thanks for coming,” Martin nodded. They each pulled up a chair and sat with him. “In the old days, I could've taken care of this thing with both hands tied behind my back, but well, now..”
“What do you think it is that we're hunting?” Sam asked.
Martin shrugged. “I don't know yet. A ghost, demon, monster...animal, vegetable, mineral. Hospital's had five deaths in the last four months. Doctors keep calling it suicides, but they're wrong.”
“Has anyone seen this thing?” Dean asked.
“Well, a couple patients have, uh, had glimpses, but there's not a lot to go on. I know you boys think I'm a bag of loose screws. Now, you wouldn't be wrong, but I wouldn't have called you unless there was something here. I can feel it in my gut.”
“We believe you,” Sam nodded. “Have you checked any of the bodies? Found signs of an attack?”
“Well, uh, no, I don't go around dead bodies anymore.”
Dr. Fuller walked up behind them. “Alex, Eddie, and Jeremy. Well, I'm glad to see you're making friends. Why don't you and, uh, Mr. Creaser join us for group? Please. Right this way.”
Sam, Martin, and Dean got up to follow him. The doctor stopped Dean. “Actually, I'm gonna be putting you in the afternoon group.”
“What? Why?” Dean asked.
“Well, to be frank, uh, the relationship that you have with your brother and your boyfriend seems dangerously codependent. I think a little time apart will do you all some good. Now, come on, Jeremy. Time for group.”
Liam huffed. “Don’t wanna and you can’t make me!”
Dr. Fuller sighed. “Not the cooperative type I see.”
Dean laughed. “Doc, I don’t think he knows what the word even means.”
Dr. Fuller looked at Liam. “Jeremy, we can make you, but I’d much rather you come along willingly. It’s really for your own good.”
“You’ll have to make me. I didn’t do anything to be here, Prince Ferdinand even said so!”
Dr. Fuller knelt down in front of him. “And who is Prince Ferdinand?”
“My pet dragon.”
“Do you see him now?”
“Well, duh, you moron!” Liam pointed to the space right beside the doctor. “He’s right there!”
Dean leaned over to Sam. “Is it just me or is he having way too much fun with this?”
Sam shook his head. “I think you landed yourself a big bucket of crazy. He fits in here a little too well.”
Dr. Fuller motioned for some orderlies to come over. They picked Liam up and started dragging him. “Hey! I have rights, people!” Liam shouted. “And I didn’t do anything!” He kicked one of the orderlies in the shin, but they continued dragging him into a little room and sat him down in a chair.
Five other patients came in and they all sat in a circle. Dr. Fuller looked out at the group. “Alright, so, who would like to start us off?” A man named Ted raised his hand. Dr. Fuller ignored him until it looked like he was about to explode. “Alright, Ted. Calm down.”
Ted lowered his hand. “I am calm. And I'd very calmly like to talk about the monster that's hunting us.”
Dr. Fuller sighed. “Ted, we're not going to have that discussion again. It's not good for group.”
“I agree,” Ted nodded. “You know what else isn't good for group? A monster eating all our faces off. I saw it when it killed Susan.”
“That's enough,” Dr. Fuller chided him. “There is no monster. Now, Ted, do you need me to call the orderlies, or can you behave?”
“Behave,” Ted nodded.
Liam huffed. “I wanna go home.”
Dr. Fuller turned to him. “Jeremy, you need to be here. Please don’t cause any more trouble.”
“But I wanna go to the other dimension in the microwave!” he started stomping his feet.
Martin leaned in to whisper to Sam. “So, that’s your brother’s boyfriend, huh?”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “He was actually a vampire for over three hundred years, Dean and I cured him. He had a shockingly abusive father and he turned into a bit of a nutbag because of it. Right now he’s just screwing with the staff… I think...”
“Jeremy, calm down please,” Dr. Fuller urged him. “Don’t make us take measures to calm you down.”
Liam whimpered. “I’m sorry, please don’t stick my feet in the fire!”
“Why would you think we would do that, Jeremy? Has anyone done that to you before?”
Liam nodded. “My daddy when I was really bad.”
“Okay,” Dr. Fuller nodded. “Now we’re getting somewhere. What else would your daddy do to you when you were bad?”
Liam shrugged. “Lots of stuff. He used to like to fill the bathtub up and hold me under until I nearly passed out. But mostly he just hit me. Sometimes he held a knife to my throat.”
“And that scared you didn’t it?”
“When I was really little. Then when I got older I was used to it.”
“Jeremy, that sounds just awful. No child should be used to that kind of treatment. Why were child services never called?”
Liam shrugged. “Good question I suppose. Maybe because no one wanted to believe anything bad about the town preacher. Hell, I was a pain in the ass kid with no mother that just happened to be really clumsy.”
Dr. Fuller sighed. “Okay, I think that’s enough for group today. Jeremy, I want to talk to you more in private.”
Sam pulled Liam aside for a minute. “You were making up that part about your dad sticking your feet in a fire, right? You’re screwing with him?”
“Screwing with him? A little,” Liam confessed. “Making that part up? Only wish I was.”
“Jeremy,” Dr. Fuller looked at him. “Come on, my office.”
“No, I wanna go home damn it!”
Sam went to go find Dean. “You doing okay?” Sam asked his brother.
“No comment,” Dean sighed. “Tell me you found something.”
“Other than the usual scary glimpse into Liam’s warped mind… Yeah, a guy says he saw the creature. We should talk to him. You wanna meet here in an hour?”
“Yeah, sooner we take care of this thing, sooner we can get gone. This place gives me the creeps.”
A woman walked up to Dean and kissed him. “Hi,” she smiled. “I'm Wendy.”
Dean turned to Sam. “Don’t tell Liam. He’ll murder me.”
Liam ran past naked from the waist down. “I’m flying!” he shouted as he dodged orderlies.
Dean shook his head. “Way, way too much fun with this.”
They watched as the orderlies finally managed to corner and grab him to put pants back on him. Dr. Fuller came out to stand over him. “Jeremy, don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing. You had better start behaving for me. I am not your father.”
“Bite me!” Liam shouted and kicked the doctor’s legs out from under him.
“That’s it!” Dr. Fuller looked a little angry. “You need a nice long time out to think about things.”
Liam was taken to a padded room and tied down to a table. He was left there about four hours until Dr. Fuller came in and found him sitting up with a pencil, lightly rubbing the ridged eraser end over his fingertips. “What the? How the?” Dr. Fuller just stared at him.
“I’m just full of surprises. You wanted me to calm down.”
“And that calms you down?”
“Yeah. Gonna read something into that too?”
“You’re hyper sexual, aren’t you?”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Here we go. Yeah, I am, yay for you guessing right. What is so wrong with liking a lot of sex? For the past two years or so it’s only been with Eddie. He’s pretty hyper sexual himself, it’s a good fit.”
Dr. Fuller sat on a chair in the corner. “I can tell you’re a very intelligent individual that really enjoys acting out too. Does it give you a sense of power when you’re doing the string pulling?”
Liam narrowed his eyes. “You can shut up and walk right out of here now.”
“Touched a nerve, did I? I’m sorry, but in order to do my job and help you I have to touch nerves. Most of what has come out of your mouth, that’s play acting. But the stuff about your father, by the look in your eyes I could tell that was real. I mean it, no child should ever have to endure those horrors. And you, you stuffed all that pain in a little box and buried it deep. When it starts to come back you do one of two things. You drown it out with feel good chemicals that come from sex and what you’re doing right now, or you act out and cause trouble, which you find funny. Anything to keep it from hurting, am I right?”
Liam chuckled softly. “Who wants to hurt? You know the saying, Doc. Life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. That’s all I did. I mean, you have no fucking clue. What was I supposed to do? Please, enlighten me. Beaten, starved, and tortured for kicks… Got my first broken rib when I was two. My brother turned his back on me just for a second and I went into our dad’s study and peed on his rug. I was too young to know better, but that didn’t stop him from beating the snot out of me in a fit of rage.” A tear slid down his cheek. “Made potty training me harder because I was afraid to pee period for like two weeks. So what exactly was I supposed to do?”
Dr. Fuller gave him a very sympathetic look. “Well, your method worked in helping you to survive. You were a young child with no available tools. But now you are a very dysfunctional adult who believes you can kill demons because it gives you the sense of power that you severely lacked growing up. Don’t get me wrong, what you’ve told me, it would screw up anyone. Hell, the fact you have any sense of clarity at all proves you’re much stronger than most people. Now I want you to use that strength and dig up that pain. The only way to get better is to face your pain head on and feel it.”
“No,” Liam shook his head. “Trust me, it is better off under twenty feet of dirt.”
“Jeremy, you’re not going anywhere until you grab a shovel and start digging.”
A little while later Liam walked up to Dean, his eyes puffy and red from crying. “What happened to you?” Dean asked.
“I officially hate this place and really do wanna go home.”
“The good doctor ruined all your fun I take it. Well, we know what we’re dealing with now; a wraith.”
“Goody.”
Dean wrapped an arm around his partner and pulled him close. “Hey, now that we know what it is we can find it and get the hell out of here so we can go back to being emotionally unhealthy people that drown everything out with sex and booze.”
“Sounds pretty good to me right about now,” Liam sighed.
Dr. Fuller came around the corner and Liam shot him a death glare. “Keep it PG you two.”
“Just giving my man a little comfort since it looks like he needs it,” Dean said as he glanced up at the mirror he was standing by. “Holy crap,” he whispered. “Let’s go find Sam.”
A little while later Sam handed Dean a letter opener. “Alright, I had to raid three nurses' stations to get these. They're only silver plated, but they should work.”
Wendy started walking toward them and Dean tensed, but she pushed Sam against the wall and started kissing him. “I want him now. He's larger.”
“That’s true,” Liam looked at his companions. “But wait, now? Have I missed something?”
Dean sighed. “Yeah, she kissed me yesterday. But Babe, I instigated nothing. I still really love you, okay?”
Liam wrenched the letter opener out of Dean’s hand. “Don’t,” he said when Dean went to say something. “I know I said I would leave the killing to you, but if it’s Dr. Fuller, I need to do this. The emotional torture he put me through, apparently for the sick thrill of it… I’m one handed, but I’ll manage.”
Dean sighed deeply, but nodded. “Okay, just be careful.”
Liam stalked the halls after lights out. He found Dr. Fuller in the hall coming around the corner. Liam hid until the last minute and then jumped out to strike. Dr. Fuller put an arm up and Liam only got his arm. An orderly tried to grab him and Liam fought him off to run after the doctor. He tackled Dr. Fuller and raised the letter opener. Martin grabbed Liam’s arm from behind. “No! Look at his arm. That cut's not burning. It's not him.”
Liam looked at the cut and sighed deeply, rolling over onto his back. Two more orderlies grabbed him and dragged him off. He was thoroughly tranquilized and left in his room. Dean entered his room and stroked his hair. “You okay, Babe?”
Liam looked thoughtful for a minute. “I don’t know.”
“They gave you something, didn’t they?”
Liam nodded. “Have you ever noticed how pretty the stars are?”
Dean chuckled. “They gave you the good stuff.”
Liam grabbed Dean’s arm. “It wasn’t the Doc.”
Dean nodded. “I know. I don’t understand it, I saw him in the mirror.”
Liam shrugged. “We’re in a nuthouse. Maybe crazy is contagious.”
“No,” Dean shook his head. “I just made a mistake. That happens sometimes. Don’t worry, we’ll find this thing.”
“It’s okay,” Liam gave him a small smile. “I still love you.”
Dean kissed the top of his head. “I love you too. Enjoy your medication and I’ll see you in the morning.”
Dean turned to leave and ran into Dr. Fuller. “You should be in your room,” the doctor gave him a stern look.
“I just wanted to check on him after what happened,” Dean motioned to Liam.
“We do not allow our patients to engage in intercourse with each other.”
Dean raised his eyebrows. “You think…? For one, as much as he would probably really enjoy it right now, he is way too toasted to consent. Two, with his mending collarbone, such activity would probably hurt him. Believe it or not, my concern for his well being is stronger than my desire to get laid. Seriously, if you can help him at all while we’re in here, please do so.”
Dr. Fuller grabbed Dean by the arm and started leading him back to his room. “Don’t worry, I’m going to try to help you all.”
In the morning Dr. Fuller visited Liam with an orderly. “How are you feeling now, Jeremy?”
Liam shrugged. “Okay, so I thought you were a monster last night. When it was pointed out to me that you weren’t I didn’t kill you. Do I get brownie points for that at least?”
Dr. Fuller sighed. “I guess yesterday I pushed you a little farther than you were ready to be pushed. For that I am sorry. Clearly your defense mechanism turned me into a monster to help you cope.” Liam tilted his head and started staring at the corner. “Jeremy, what is it?”
“I actually see a little a talking dragon.”
“And what is the dragon saying?”
“De- Eddie doesn’t really love me, just uses me for sex. He knows what my father knew, I’m a worthless pile of mother murdering crap that doesn’t deserve to be loved. I should just kill myself now. He’s got a point.”
Dr. Fuller put a hand on Liam’s shoulder. “No, Jeremy, he doesn’t. You probably don’t remember, but last night I caught Eddie out of bed checking on you. Eddie really does love you, I could tell by everything he said to me. He wants me to help you. Your mother, that wasn’t your fault. From what you told me, your placenta just for whatever reason attached to the uterine wall too deeply and she bled uncontrollably when it detached. It’s sad, but it happens once in a while. This day and age doctors can usually get the bleeding to stop, but I guess they couldn’t that time. You deserved to be loved. Unfortunately, it seems like your father’s anger and grief pushed him over the edge and caused him to do really terrible things. The things he did to you, it’s considered illegal to do those things to a convicted serial killer. Why in the world would you think you deserved any of that? When you’re calm and honest I can tell that deep down you’re really a good kid. Your father was just trying to assuage his own pain by hurting you. It was an extremely awful thing to do, but not much different than you running around with no pants. Different approaches, same goal, you understand?”
“I think so,” Liam nodded.
“Good,” Dr. Fuller gave him a little smile. “If you can promise to behave you can go out to the day room now.
They walked out to see Sam standing alone in the middle of the room punching at air and shouting, “Leave me alone!”
“Here we go,” Dr. Fuller sighed as two orderlies grabbed Sam by the arms while he tried to punch them too.
Sam was dragged off and Liam found Dean curled up in a corner looking frightened. Liam went over and knelt beside him. “Talk to me, love,” he stroked Dean’s cheek lovingly.
Dean turned to him. “Sam just went nuts. I’m seeing and hearing things.”
“Yeah, me too again,” Liam sighed.
Dean looked at him shocked. “And that doesn’t bother you?”
“Not really,” Liam answered. “Something else I just got used to. I knew you were going to need me. Okay, love, breathe deep and don’t fight it. I know it sounds strange, but the trick with crazy is to embrace it. The more you try to fight it the worse it gets, trust me on this.”
“Okay,” Dean nodded and started taking really deep breaths. “You know, I think crazy is clue here. Me and Sam both losing it on the same day, that can’t be a coincidence. Maybe it’s some kind of venom. Wendy! She slobbered all over both me and Sam.”
“Yeah, but she didn’t slobber on me, and right now two vampires are feeding on a patient and giving me the evil eye.”
“Where?” Dean looked around frightened.
“Right there,” Liam pointed to the corner. “But it doesn’t matter because it’s a hallucination. My mind is using my deep seeded fears against me.”
“And you are scary calm about it.”
Liam shrugged. “What good is freaking out going to do me? I’ve been driving with one headlight since I was three.”
“What?” Dean shot him a look.
“Oh, we really need to broaden your taste in music.” Liam blinked. “Okay then.”
“What do you see now?” Dean asked.
“Everybody just hung themselves. Don’t worry, Dean, we will get through this. I am fluent in bat shit crazy. Just stay right here with your eyes closed and keep taking deep breaths while I go find us another letter opener.”
Dean nodded and did just that until Liam returned a little while later laughing. “What is so funny?”
“Barney hates me,” Liam chuckled.
“Who’s Barney?”
Liam shot Dean a funny look. “The big purple dinosaur that loves everybody? Never mind, let’s just go hunting,” he handed Dean a letter opener.
They stalked the halls, Dean walking in a funny pattern. Liam raised an eyebrow at him. “I can’t step on any cracks,” Dean explained.
They heard a woman scream and they raced to Wendy’s room. One of the nurses was sitting over her, a skewer coming out of the nurse’s wrist and into Wendy’ head. “Are you seeing this?” Dean asked Liam.
“Yep,” Liam nodded.
The wraith threw Dean up against the wall, then Liam. While the wraith punched Dean a few times Liam got loose and tried to attack. She held up her hand and Liam sliced it, the wound sizzling. She threw them both to the floor and slammed the door shut, locking them both in.
Two orderlies came along with Martin. “You two leave them to me and go!” Martin shouted as he attacked the orderlies to draw attention.
“I can’t,” Dean whimpered.
“Do what I said,” Liam sighed. “Don’t fight it.”
Liam pulled him up and they ran after the wraith. They found her in the padded room with Sam about to stick her skewer into his brain. “You get away from him!” Dean shouted.
“Do you really think this is gonna end well for you, kiddo?” she mused.
Liam lunged for her and was thrown against the wall. Dean stabbed her from behind right in the heart. She cried out as she fell. “You guys okay?” Sam asked them.
“No worse than usual,” Dean answered. “We gotta get out of here.”
They untied Sam and made a run for it into the woods. The Impala was waiting on an old dirt road. Liam leaned against the car staring back at the hospital with alarms going off pensively. “Babe?” Dean looked him worried.
“I’m really not okay, am I?” Liam looked back at him.
Dean tossed Sam the keys and pulled Liam into the back with him. “Babe, I won’t lie, you are nowhere near okay. Sam and I, we’re a little fucked up, but you are full on crazy town, population one. Somehow though, you manage to function. Consider that a win. You let those hallucinations roll off you like nothing and you helped us get the job done.”
“There really is nothing you can do you know,” Liam looked Dean in the eye.
“About what?” Dean asked.
“Me having doubts about us. The little dragon said it all this morning. I don’t think you really love me because I don’t think I deserve to be loved.”
Dean hugged Liam tight. “Oh, Babe, that could not be further from the truth. I am going to love you until you’re drowning in it, you got that?”
Liam smiled at that and kissed him. “That would mean a lot to me. I love you too.”
