Astiratu looked to where Rowena and Crowley had been standing, but they were gone. “Rowena had something to do with this, didn't she?” he turned back to Lucifer. “She knew.”
“You catch on quick. Did as she was told. Groupies, they’re always so eager.”
“So you did all of that just to what, jump my bones?” Sam asked.
“One of you, yes. Of course, now I know that it has to be you. A shame really. All that power, and the vessel can't handle it. Always hate to see that.”
“Well, you wasted your time then.”
Astiratu got between Sam and Lucifer. “I said my body was breaking down, not that I was limp. It might cost me, but I can still kick your ass. And I'll only have to hold you off for a little while, because you do realize Dean will come get us out of here, right?”
Lucifer chuckled. “You’re betting on Dean?”
“And why shouldn't I? Sure, he can be an idiot, but at least he's loyal and he cares.”
Lucifer pulled his hands to his chest in a dramatic action. “Ouch. You can quit with the barbs now. I know you're still angry, but really, Dean is what trips your trigger now? I really don't get that. And rumor has it he wasn't so loyal when the mark was on his arm. Maybe you're dumber than I give you credit for.”
The half angel lunged to attack Lucifer in anger, but again he was outmaneuvered. His arms were pulled roughly behind his back and an invisible force kept them bound. “You son of a bitch!” Astiratu growled as he was tossed to the floor of the cage.
“Your temper has always been your weakness,” Lucifer said as he turned his attention to Sam. “Now that he's out of the way, you and I can have a little bonding time.”
Sam took a step back so that his back was against the bars. “So what, you're gonna torture me until I say yes?”
Lucifer closed in. “Oh Sam. You got me all wrong.”
“I doubt that.”
“No. I’m not here to torture you. I mean I could. I could inflict pain like you can’t even imagine. I could inflict such delicious perfect pain. But that was so five years ago. No. I’m not going to harm a glorious little hair on that glorious little head.”
“Then what?”
“Sam, have I ever told you how much I respect you? Or at least, how much I used to.”
“What?” Sam was suddenly very confused.
“Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't like you. I never liked you. You're sort of prissy.”
“For the record, I really hate you,” Astiratu said from the floor.
Lucifer sighed. “I've figured that out for myself, funnily enough, but this doesn't concern you. Although, for the record, I will point out that there is a very fine line between love and hate. You're very good at walking those lines, like the one between genius and pure insanity.”
“The latter is correct, the former, you wish.”
Lucifer turned back to Sam. “You used to be bold and decisive. Anything to save the world. You have saved the world many times. And our last meeting, you and Dean put yourselves in harm's way to get me out of your friend. I mean, Dean was the one I went after, but you were there. That’s not you anymore. You’ve gone soft, Sammy.”
“I hate to agree with the bastard, but he's right on that one,” Astiratu commented.
“How can you even say that?” Sam was upset by that.
“Handcuffing demons instead of killing them?” the half angel reminded Sam. “Your determination to save everyone affected the release of the Darkness, even though you apparently nearly killed yourself in the process. You're going way above and beyond to save people you can't actually save.”
“I found a cure for that sickness!” Sam snapped back.
“Yeah, but what about the demons? They aren't going to let those bodies go until they're too damaged to be of use, and you know that. Killing the person along with the demon would've kinder, but no... You have to be the savior now.”
Lucifer knelt down next to Astiratu, but not close enough to be reached. “It just kills you to argue my point for me, doesn't it?” Then he turned back to Sam. “But this is more than just a recent problem. It goes all the way back to when Dean was stuck in purgatory. You didn't do anything to look for him.”
Sam clenched his jaw. “We didn't know what else to do. But I don't need to defend myself to you.”
“So why did you let Dean talk you out of closing the gates of hell? Because the old Sam never would’ve done that. Not ever.”
“I didn't...”
“No wait, here’s my personal favorite, you doing every stupid thing you could to cure the mark, even after you knew it would go bad.”
“My brother was dying!” Sam shouted.
“Yes! And you’d do anything to save him. And he’d do anything to save you. And that is the problem. And then of course you dragged my ex into the insanity. Oh, how the mighty beast has fallen; fallen for humans of all things. You’re so overcome by guilt that you can’t stand to lose Dean again. Dean would never be able to stand losing either one of you. Astiratu here refuses to let go of his treasured pets. And so instead of choosing the world you choose each other, no matter how many innocent people die.”
Sam growled. “You’re going to lecture me about hurting people? You?”
“I'm on Sam's side again,” Astiratu said. “Sure we are very attached to each other, but we didn't try to kill of the entire planet because we didn't get our way a very long time ago.”
“I'd gag you, but I've missed your sharp tongue,” Lucifer chuckled. “You know I’m right Sam. You know it! And I know if you’re going to beat the Darkness you have to be ready to die. You have to be ready to watch the people you love die. A long time ago you could have fought the good fight kid, but not anymore. You can’t win this one Sam. You’re just not strong enough.”
“And you are?” Sam raised an eyebrow.
“Hey, it's what I do.”
“As I recall, your super power is being a giant brat,” Astiratu mumbled. “And I'm over that.”
Lucifer scoffed. “As if you're one to talk. I've seen your temper tantrums. And the little power granting stunt that got you locked away... How many people do you think that killed? I don't recall you caring much at the time. And, Sunshine, you may be pissed at me for giving you up, but I didn't make you do the crime.”
“That was then. I was given another task to do, and my perspective has changed. The fact that I love humans at all is proof that something has changed in me.”
“And you don't think I've changed a little too?”
“No. All you've done is sit in a cell. And really, how much can a person change in just a few short years after trying to wipe everyone out.”
“Sitting in a cell gives a person a lot of time to think.”
“But then there's the way you're speaking to Sam. Everything you've said is at least a little bit true. Outright lying never was your style. But you twist to make yourself look good. You're still doing it, trying to convince us you're our only hope. I think this was a mistake, because I think this was just another one of your escape attempts.”
Lucifer turned to Sam, gesturing to Astiratu. “You see how he talks to me?” Sam was sitting in the corner. “Now Sam, I know this is a lot to take in, so if you need to take some time and noodle on it, that’s cool. But, ah, world is ending, clock ticking. You follow me?”
“What do you want me to say?” Sam mumbled.
“A little word that starts with Y, ends in ES.” Sam just turned away. “Okay, you don't like me. I get it. Sometimes I don't like me either. But Gabriel and Raphael are dead. God went out for a pack of smokes and never came back. And Michael, well, let's just say prison life hasn't really agreed with Michael. These days he's usually sitting in a corner singing show tunes and touching himself.”
“Life's a bitch when you need to get permission to get what you really want, isn't it?” Astiratu was smirking. “Isn't it funny how I just don't have that problem. I've already possessed Sam once without his knowledge. It was to get Gadreel out, and I didn't get to enjoy being tall again for very long, but still... I can do a lot of things you can't.”
“But I can do one very important thing that you can't. Neither of you seem to be listening! “I'm it! And hey, I'm not the good guy, we all know I'm not, but the Darkness, she's the end of everything.” He crouched down in front of Sam. “But I can beat her. We can beat her. You and me, together. So come on, Sam. Make the right choice, the big sacrifice one more time, man. Sam, it's time to save the world.”
“No,” Sam repeated.
“What do you mean no?” Lucifer shouted angrily.
“You heard me.”
“Okay, now Sam, I gotta tell you, this is selfish, man, everything...”
Sam stood back up. “You are done. It’s over. You know what? Astiratu is right, as usual. You talk a good game. You do. Hell, you almost had me sold a few times. But then I thought what if you’re right? What if you’re telling the truth? What if you can beat her?”
“I can!”
“Even though the last time it took you, plus three other archangels. Oh yeah, and capital G, God.”
“He's got you there,” Astiratu pointed out. “You always did have trouble with people who were smart enough to see the holes in your story.”
“Shut up!” Lucifer kicked the half angel in a fit of anger. “The others were dead weight. I'm the one with the real power.”
“Well, let’s say you gank her, then what?” Sam asked.
Lucifer just shrugged. “I move to LA, solve crimes.”
“Wrong. Then you go about starting the Apocalypse, again, because you're an old dog and that's your old trick.”
“Okay, first off, you don't know that. Second, even if I did that's better than what she has planned.”
“Is it? Really? Beause this is what I think. I think that whoever wins, you or the Darkness, everyone else loses. So, no. My answer is no. This isn't because of Dean, or the past. This is about me having faith in my friends, having faith in my family. We will find a way. I'm ready to die and I'm ready to watch people I love die, but I'm not ready to be your bitch.”
“Okay, plan B.” Lucifer started punching Sam.
“Hey, ass butt!” they heard Castiel's voice call out.
They all turned to see Dean and Castiel standing outside the cage. Lucifer grinned. “Dean, ah, the other one.” He snapped his fingers and Dean and Castiel were suddenly in the cage as well. “Welcome to the party. Scared?”
“Not even a little,” Dean responded.
Castiel pulled out an angel blade, and Lucifer raised a finger to stop him. “Wait, moments like this, it’s all about ambiance.” He snaps his fingers again and the song 'Heaven Must be Missing an Angel' started playing. Lucifer started dancing as if to mock them. Castiel then lunged at him.
While Castiel was struggling with Lucifer, Dean ran over to Sam and Astiratu. “You two okay?”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded.
“Working on it,” Astiratu answered. “He put one hell of a binding spell on me.”
“We can't win,” Sam was concerned because Castiel was getting pummeled.
Dean patted his shoulder. “We don’t have to win. We’ve just gotta last a few minutes.”
The brothers joined the fight, and Lucifer easily handled all three of them. He threw Sam across the cage, and punched Dean in the stomach. Then he grabbed Dean by the throat and started choking him. “Alright Sam, I’m gonna make this real easy for you. You say the magic word or your brother dies, and we both know you won’t let that happen.”
Astiratu suddenly lunged up and clung to Lucifer's back. With one arm he tried to free Dean, and with the other he started choking Lucifer as he bit the archangel on the side of his face. Lucifer hissed and dropped Dean. “How did you get free?”
“Easy, I'm me,” Astiratu said as he slugged Lucifer hard enough to send him flying back into the bars. Lucifer tried to hit back, but his arm was grabbed and wrenched painfully behind his back as his face was slammed into the bars. He took hit after bone breaking hit until he just slumped to floor like he couldn't fight back anymore.
Astiratu stopped the attack, and only took his attention off Lucifer for a second when Lucifer sprung back up and grabbed him in a choke hold. “Oh, Sunshine, your arrogance is your biggest weakness.”
“Oh look, the pot is calling the kettle black,” the half angel choked out defiantly.
Lucifer threw him hard with a twisting motion, and Astiratu fell to the floor limp. Dean rushed over to check on him while Castiel got a second wind and attacked again. Lucifer beat him into the corner, then stepped on the angel blade. “So, last words...” Suddenly there was a bright flash of light and Lucifer was gone.
“Is he...?” Sam asked Dean with a worried look on his face.
“The idiot is just knocked out,” Dean answered.
“Lucifer would never kill him,” Castiel said as he got up. “He couldn't do it any more than you could. The other way around, however... That I don't know.”
“Are you okay?” Sam asked the angel.
“I will be.”
Crowley and Rowena came out, Rowena with a metal collar around her neck. The cage door opened and Dean picked his partner up and they all got out. “You're welcome,” Rowena had a little smile on her face. “Anyone...?”
“Bite me!” Dean snapped.
“I can make her do that,” Crowley seemed pleased at that thought.
“So what now?” Sam asked.
Crowley shrugged. “About the Darkness? No clue.”
“We'll figure it out,” Dean tried to assure his brother.
“Or die screaming,” Rowena commented.
“This has been a horrible train wreck, so we’re done. Team up over,” Crowley said.
“What about her?” Sam motioned to Rowena.
“She stays. The rest of you lot, get the hell out of hell.”
They gladly left the same way Dean and Castiel got in. Dean put Liam's unconscious body in the backseat before turning to Castiel. “You want me to give you a lift?”
“No, you go on ahead. I’ll catch up,” Castiel answered.
Sam and Dean got into the car. “Tough day,” Dean said as he settled into the driver's seat.
Sam nodded. “Yeah. Tell me about it.”
“You good?”
“I don’t know. I mean, what if Lucifer was telling the truth, you know, what if he’s the only...”
“No, dude, the Darkness is bad. Her and the Devil, that’s a nightmare.”
“But he doesn't outright lie.”
“No, he twists the truth to his benefit. And maybe his ego is just that big. I should have never let him do that. He remembers the dreams, so I wonder how much of this he'll remember.”
Sam shrugged. “I don't know. Let's just go home.”
“You sure you're all right?” Dean was concerned. “I mean, you were in that cage with him for a while. That could screw anybody up.”
“I'm a little shaken to be honest, but I'll be okay.”
“One question though. Why was he trying to get you to say yes? I thought Astiratu's vessel was the only he could, you know...”
“Apparently not. He said something about that pact our ancestor, Liam's father, made with Michael. It opens us up to any archangel I guess. And Astiratu there spilled the beans on his body being barely able to handle just him lately.”
“So he went after you. Just great. And just when I had forgotten that Liam and I are technically related by blood.”
“That bothers you? I mean, the relation is not that close.”
“I know. Generations have passed. I just don't like being reminded that I'm descended from a giant dick. And sometimes it does weird me out if I think about it too much. I mean, what are the odds?”
Sam chuckled. “With our lives the way they are... Just don't think too much about how you're screwing your great, great, however many greats uncle.”
“Shut up,” Dean grumbled as he started heading for home.
