It has been three days since I found Emma out here in the woods and she still hasn't regained control and I'm still just sat around waiting for her to speak to me. She hasn't told me anything yet and she only becomes more frustrated with each passing moment. The only reason she allows me to be here is because I've been feeding her.
"You are going to have to say something eventually," I sigh, tossing her a grilled cheese sandwhich. "Clearly working through whatever is bothering you on your own just is not working. You should have gotten through this by now, I am not sure why you have not but sometimes it is easier to speak to a stranger than it is to speak to anyone else. If you want me to get someone else then I can do that, I can protect anyone that you might want me to bring here. I gave my word that I was going to do something and I have not been able to do it, I am not angry. I just want to figure out why it has happened this way, I have never seen anyone get this stuck for this long before. Ths process is never easy but it is usually a lot faster, you have calmed down considerably. Your magic should be calming down along with you, I do not like it when things do not work the way that they are supposed to."
"You want to know what the problem is?" Emma spits. "The problem is you, or at least it was you but I don't even care about that now. You showed up and you saved the whole town, twice, in the space of like ten minutes, I'm supposed to be The Saviour. Now you're out here saving me but it turns out that I actually like you so I don't know why this is happening. I just want this to be over, I want to get back to my life, I need to see Gold."
Emma tears into her sandwhich, looking everywhere but at me and I can't stop staring at her. I've noticed something, it must have been there the whole time but I've only just seen it. A rage boils up inside of me and I know exactly what's happening but more that that I know who's responsible. A shout of pure rage rips from my lips, a crude signal but one that I know will be followed. Before the echoes of the cry has fully faded Rumplestiltskin appears before us. It only takes one look for me to tell that the man standing in front of me is not my brother. The entity that calls itself The Dark One has broken free of it's confines and bubbled to the surface.
"It has been a long time," my voice is dripping with venom as I turn on the man. "You are well aware that I know who you are and I see that mark on her arm. I know what you have done, the only thing that I do not know is why you bothered with it, if you wanted to speak with me then all you had to do was say so. I am angry with my brother, not with you. You only do what your nature dictates that you must, he chose to taint himself with his association with you. You want to make a deal, that much is clear, you have no other reason to curse Emma. I have a feeling that I know what you want but I want to hear it from you, there is just one thing that I need first. Put a temporary hold on that curse so that we do not have to shout over random blasts of magic. If we really must do this then let us at least be civillized, this is unnecessary."
"Fine," he giggles and with a wave of his hand the pulses of raw magic that emenate from Emma stop. I know from experince that when dealing with you I need to concentrate, dearie. You have this rather annoying habit of only making deals that are weighted in your favour. That's not going to happen this time, no, no, no, because it doesn't matter to me how long it takes. You see I am here and the True Vessel is here and even you don't have the power to change fate. We will be brought together, little bird, and there's nothing that you can do about it but that doesn't change the fact that I don't want to hang around in this pathetic meatsuit any longer than I have to. I want you to tell The True Vessel the truth of who they are and get me out of this useless lump. His very nature fights against what I am, even tearing out his Grace wouldn't change that. Tell The True Vessel and I'll make sure that curse mark never comes back, I know it's not enough. That's why I brought something else with me, you can have this once I'm where I belong. I might even let this meatsack have access to enough of his memories to help you identify who's in the church."
"Let me see that," the words choke out of me as he holds up a coin made of honey coloured metal. "You have my word that I will return it to you, I need to be sure that it is real. There is only one way that you could have gotten your hands on this and that is if you went to Lilith. It must have been in a previous form, you would not be walking around in that body otherwise. Tell me, what did you have to give her in exchange for such a relic?" He places the coin in my hand. "It is real, you did not have to give her anything did you?" I grudingly hand back the coin. "This is the only thing that can bring back the only thing that she has ever feared. She gave it to you because there as no way that you could use it and she already had me locked away. She wanted that thing as far away from her as she could possibly get it and you were her best shot at doing that. She never would have imagined that I could get it out of you, let alone that you would offer it to me willingly."
"I notice that you still haven't agreed," The Dark One grumbles. "Whoever it is they must be very important to you, dearie, a lot of people here have to be very important to you. You opened a portal to The Lower Realm, someone will have noticed, there will be things coming to this town now. You and I both know what would happen if they came here now. You would be the only one who even knew what was happening but I have something else to offer. Something that can change all that, allow you to train all your little newbies the way that you always used to. You used to have the most feared army in all the worlds."
"That was a long time ago," I remind him as with a flourish he conjures a key that he tosses to me. "The fact that you have this is extremely troubling, I have no idea where you got it but you have yourself a deal. I do have a couple of stipulations, remove the curse from Emma now, it does not hold enough weight to make any difference to the deal. I can remove it myself but it would be irritating. I inform The True Vessel of their nature when everyone effected by The Dark Curse has awakened. At the same time as I do this I will also give you the name of that person so that you can make your appeal. Right now, we exchange the key for the dagger, to cement the deal. I believe that this should keep everyone happy and in line until we no longer need each other. Now, we both know that it would be in your best interests to allow my brother to come to the surface. He is emotionally invested in all this, you need not be concerned about how well he handles things. It took me a while to realize it but there were more voices than people in that church, it is a nexus point. Which means that over time the curse has grown, now everyone is effected by it which means that she is too. She is going to wake up and she is going to come straight for me when she does."
"Yes, yes," The Dark One drawls, holding out an imperious hand, waiting for the dagger to appear in it. "I will cede control to your brother for the time being, dearie, neither of us wants that woman getting her claws into you again. The world is far too boring without you in it. Besides, if I let her kill you I may never find out who The True Vessel is and I doubt I'd be able to figure it out. I've been in this town long enough that I must have been living right on top of them this entire time. If I haven't seen it by now, I probably never will, I'll take this carcass home and let him loose. I just need the dagger first, I have to say I'm impressed, I never thought it would be in the cards. Then again, you know that you're going to need my help, it's easier if I'm willing. I'll tell you this, my newfound hatred of fairies, there is a very good reason for it, you should be careful of them. Use your caution, you don't know who's in the church and who's missing."
With a wave of my hand I deposit the dagger in his and he disappears in a puff of smoke. As he disappears a polar bear of all things comes crashing through the undergrowth towards us. The beast skids to a halt at my side, looking around for signs of danger before relaxing and nuzzling it's nose into the side of my neck. I choose to ignore this turn of events, instead focusing on the key in my hand. Emma looks nervously at the bear but she still comes to my side when I open a portal. The portal drops us at the library and I quickly enter the building, both Emma and the bear following. I raise a hand before the bear can enter, much to the relief of a startled Henry who is browsing the books with Mary Margaret. They jump up at the sight of Emma, rushing to embrace her. None of this slows me down as I peer down every aisle I come to until I see a door at the end of one of them. Mary Margaret, Emma and Henry are all watching me curiously. I approach the door, key in hand and hoping against hope that what I think is going to happen will. I open the door to reveal a maintenance cupboard, then I close the door and slide in the key.
When I open the door for a second time we are all greeted with a very different sight. Beyond the door is a stunningly beautiful manor house, ornate but still it feels like a home. It should feel like a home, I built this place with magic for Killian and I after our wedding and just as I knew they would all of his siblings ended up moving into it. That's why it had to be so big. The happiest times of my life were all in this house but that isn't why The Dark One gave me the key. I step through the portal, leaving it open as I step into what used to be my home for anyone who might want to follow. There is a central open air courtyard and four stories of rooms in a square that surround it. I move around the lower floor, opening every door that I come to before moving on. I walk past the stable and the armoury and don't stop until I open a door that leads to a library. It spans the entire height of the building, one of the four sides dedicated to nothing but the preservation of knowledge.
"Everything is exactly as I left it," I breathe in awe. "Seven people lived in this house when I disappeared from it a thousand years ago and yet everything is exactly the same. The most powerful grimoires and most extensive collection of prophecies that has ever existed is right here in this room. This room is what helped me to build my so called army."
Henry looks like he's chomping at the bit, wanting to take a look around. I indicate that he should stay on the bottom level and he scampers away into the stacks. I wanted to see if this place had been disturbed but that isn't the real reason I'm here, there's something that I need to check on. Arrayed along the back well are different suits of armour. Each suit is displayed in a case but I go to one that's different from the rest, made entirely of black leather. A halterneck with barely any back, vambraces, leggings and hunting boots. With a wave of my hand the outfit is no longer in the case, I'm wearing it and in my hands appears something that looks like an over-sized chess board. I breathe a sigh of relief and return everything to it's proper place.
Emma and Mary Margaret both look at me curiously but neither one of them asks about what they have just seen. Henry appears to have found a book about fairies. He wanders down the aisle toward us, frowning at the book with a bewlidered look on his face. Emma instantly goes to his side, trying to get her to talk to him, clearly concerned but he just brushes past her. He hands me the book and I only have to glance at it to know what he has found. This particular book tells of the death of The Fairy Queen, she was also known as The Blue Fairy. She had sacrificed her life protecting her fellow fairies from a band of murderous humans. The book has a painting of that battle next to the story, The Blue Fairy riddled with arrows.
