Chapter One-Distractions, Attractions and Agreements
Jim Brass came into work that hot August night. It was Friday and tomorrow he would have off. As he got out of his car he saw the new girl in dispatch park her 1968 copper colored Mustang. For a month she had been there on the radio. She had wished him a good day often enough with that honey rich, Spanish flavored voice of hers. Plus he had seen her many times at the desk she worked from. She wore skirts with her uniform. A treat in this day in age when so many women had traded the skirt and heels for the pants and shoes of a police officer. She hadn’t though. He saw her get out of the mustang. All 5 foot 7 of her legs first out of the car. “She has to have the longest, shapeliest legs I have seen in a long time.” He said to himself.
At that point he hadn’t realized he was staring at her. But he really couldn’t help it. She was beautiful and a real treat for an overworked, underpaid, middle aged, Captain Detective grade. God knew that Captain Jim Brass needed a diversion. Looking was all he ever intended to do with her. He knew his chances of a woman that…..built even acknowledging he was a live was slim at best.
While he was watching her exit car car she caught him doing so. She didn’t acknowledge his presents as of yet. She bent down into the car letting him catch her bending over. Brass blinked a few times and composed himself. “Well she has the goods for sure.” He said shaking his head and putting his coat over his arm. It was too hot to wear the suit coat outside or inside. He had placed his badge on his belt for the mean time. When she turned around he was still watching her. She smiled at him. It shocked him. “Busted.” He said to himself. That wasn’t all she was coming over to him. He got a smile on his face with somewhat of a strained look under toning it.
“Buenos Noches Capitan Brass.” She said greeting him that accent almost hitting him like a stone.
“Good Evening Lieutenant.” He managed.
“How was your day?” She asked.
“Long but fine.” He said. He realized he might be describing her legs at that point.
“As was mine. Are you ready for the night at hand?” She asked.
“Do we have a choice?” He shrugged. “Shall we Lieutenant?” He said gesturing that they should go on in.
“We shall Capitan.” Said Nevada. They walked to the door and he opened it for her.
“Gracious.” She said walking though the opened door.
“Your welcome.” He said. Not only was it a treat to watch her get out of the car he was right behind her watching her walk. In heels she met his eyes. Something he didn’t mind. Because her eyes were like the rest of her. Gorgeous. They were an unusual color. That closest to Topaz, the brown kind and Amber. She was the finest looking redhead next to Catherine Willows he had seen in a long time. Although, her hair was more auburn brown and curly as Catherine’s was almost a strawberry blonde. There was no doubt about it. Jim Brass was smitten with the new dispatcher. Why was obvious. Jim had taste and his own brand of class. Nevada was a thorough bred. She had breeding and class that of which he hadn’t seen. But she was Spanish. From Spain with a little Irish on her mothers side as her file had told. She had been born in Madrid and lived there until she was a teenager.
He walked down the hall to his office, her at his side. As they got to his office she stopped.
“I hope your day goes well Capitan.” She said sweetly.
“Thank you Lieutenant. I hope yours goes well too. Talk to you on the radio.” He said.
“Thank you Capitan. We most assuredly will.” She said smiling at him. That smile. The one that he couldn’t help returning. He stood there smiling back at her.
Grissom and Catherine stood watching the exchange.
“What’s got into Jim?” Asked Grissom.
“Nevada has.” Said Catherine. “He’s smitten.”
“You mean our new dispatcher?” Asked Grissom.
“Yes. Her name is Nevada Cintrone. She transferred here from The Texas Rangers. She told me that she needed a break and a new start.” Said Catherine.
“You know Catherine I think your right. He’s been smiling at her for about 5 minutes now without saying anything.” Said Grissom.
“She’s talking to him. He’s responding the best way he can at the moment. If she were talking to you wouldn’t you be a little well………off guard for lack of better words?” Catherine asked.
“Maybe.” Said Grissom. “A woman like her eats men like Jim for breakfast. I hope he is prepared to be eaten and swallowed.”
“Oh Gris you have Nevada pre judged as a man eater. She is hardly that. She is very sweet and helpful. She gets things done fast or haven’t you had that pleasure of hearing her voice on the radio?” Asked Catherine.
“I have but I didn’t pay attention really. I guess if you think she is ok then she is.” Said Grissom.
Catherine shook her head. Even Nevada in all her beauty couldn’t budge or distract Grissom. Catherine got a mean streak in her about that time and reached over and pinched him.
“Ouch why did you just pinch me?” Asked Grissom rubbing his arm.
“I wanted to see if you were alive and breathing. I can’t believe you!” She said walking off shaking her head. Grissom took off after Catherine leaving Jim and Nevada still conversing in the hall.
“See you later then Capitan.” She said as she was preparing to walk off toward dispatch.
“I sure hope so……..I mean I’m sure you will.” Said Jim correcting himself. She smiled one last smile at him and walked off down the hall. Him standing there watching the show. She disappeared down the hall into dtch tch and he went into his office a little happier to be at work than usual.
Later that night Jim was still in his office looking over and doing paperwork. A knock came on his office door. He looked over to see Nevada standing at his door with papers in her hand. He motioned her to come in.
“Pardon the intrusion Capitan. I have papers you must sign.” She said as she walked over to his desk. He smiled at her again. She smiled back. She put the papers on his desk prepared to walk away and for him to continue working. But he didn’t.
“Ah, Lieutenant what the hell am I signing and where?” He asked as she stopped her turn.
“They are from the Medford case.” She said stooping a little over him. Her hand over the back of his office chair almost touching him and the other poised to show him where he would sign. “Sign it right there.” She pointed. She was so close he could smell the perfume she had on. A mix of spice and earth with a little floral mixed in. He looked up at her as she was pointing. For a second or two he was face to face with other parts of her anatomy he wasn’t familiar with. He looked down quickly to where she was pointing. He looked the papers over and they seemed to be in order. She had risen up from her stooping position by that time.
“Please wait and I will sign them so you don’t have to come back.” Said Jim as she stood there. He was still able to smell the perfume although it was faint. He signed the papers handing them to her.
“You are a real asset to the department catching all this.” Said Jim. “Nothing gets by you does it?” He asked.
“Thank you. Some things do. But the majority does not.” She said. She took the papers from him and started another turn.
“So you know that I have been admiring you?” He asked.
“I do.” She said. “I do not mind admiration.”
“That’s good. I was going to apologize for it but seeing you are already on to me….”
“No need for apologies.” She said looking over her shoulder at him. “I welcome the distraction.”
“Well ok Lieutenant. I certainly don’t mean anything lewd, crude or socially unacceptable about it.” Said Jim.
“I know you do not Capitan.” She said. “A woman knows when her virtue is in danger. I do not feel threatened by your gaze.”
“That’s good because that is the last thing I need is a sexual harassment suit.” said Jim.
“You are not that kind of man Capitan.” Said Nevada turning again. She picked a spot on his desk and moved the paperwork over. Then she did something quit to Jim’s shock. She sat on the place she had moved the papers from and crossed her legs. All two miles of them. She was testing him. He knew it too. Not that he minded it. It let him know that she was interested in him. She wanted to know just how far he was willing to take things.
“So you don’t take me as some kind of nut?” He asked as he glanced at the beautiful shapely legs before him.
“No sir, I do not.” She said. “Besides if you were that kind of man you would be all over me by now.”
“What makes you think I’m not going to do just that?” He asked.
“Because, you have values. Because when you have looked at me it is not with lust in your eyes. It’s admiration. There is a difference and I am well old enough to know that difference.
“Your wise beyond your years.” Said Jim. He hadn’t moved an inch since she sat on his desk.
“How old do you believe I am?” She asked leaning over a bit.
“My guess…….humm I’m not good at women’s ages but late 20’s?” He asked.
She giggled. “You flatter me.”
“I take it that I was wrong?” he asked.
“You were.” Said Nevada. “I was born September 28, 1963. I am 40 almost 41.”
“Well, you don’t look a day over 28 to me. But that is still 10 years difference in our ages.” He said.
“You hold your age well yourself Capitan.” She said getting off the desk wiggling a little. He had passed the test with flying colors. He hadn’t moved or made a move toward her. That in her book meant to her that he was harmless and the looking for him was all the engagement there would be without her say so. He was a gentleman. She was glad too. She didn’t want to fend off advances. But she had been doing some looking of her own at him without that suit coat on that he usually had plastered to him, hiding his body and his build. It was the first chance she had, had to admire him. He had felt like she might have been but he thought it foolish. Why would a woman like her look at me? Was his thought.
“Thank you Lieutenant.” He said her eyes still looking him over. “Now that we have the formalities over and done with why don’t we just go easy huh? Sitting on my desk is ok with me but hey, no sitting on my lap for a while.” He joked chuckling a little.
“Agreed. I will not sit on your lap for at least a little while.” She shot back she was not as jovial shooting it back either. Her agreement not to do so meant that she wasn’t going to for a while but she was going too eventually.
He thought to himself. She’s doing a little looking too but why? Then he hit recognition with the lap sitting exchange. “Lieutenant what did you mean by that agreement?” He asked.
“Only that I will not for a while. Not that I will not eventually do so. When you least expect something is usually when it happens.” She said letting a small purr out with the accent.
Jim cleared his throat. “I guess that will remain to be seen.” He said. “Did you have other matters to discuss with me?” He asked.
“No sir. I feel as if I may have gone a little far just now.” She said.
“You didn’t. So don’t worry about it. Your feeling out the situation for the lack of better words and that’s ok. Besides…….umm, it will give me something to look forward too.” He said smiling at her.
“Me also Capitan.” She said smiling at him. “Now I must go back to work.” She said getting up and starting to leave.
“Oh Lieutenant? Aren’t you forgeg sog some things?” He asked rattling the papers at her she had brought for him to sign. Every moment passing his smile taking a little wickedness into it.
“Dios Mio! I am sorry.” She said retrieving the papers from him to him bringing them back so she couldn’t. It was his turn to tease at the moment.
“Now say please.” He said almost wickedly. She crossed her arms and let a evil smile out herself. He was looking at her with a really pleased look on his face at the moment.
“Please sir may I have the papers?” She said almost giggling.
“That’s better. Here ya go.” He said smiling at her and handing her the papers.
“You are a big flirt.” Said Nevada taking them.
“Oh, you have no idea what I’m capable of. Just ask around. You’ll find out or wait and fall into something.” He said nonchalantly with a little power behind it.
“Oh, of that I am sure of. You are a bad boy.” She said in almost a scolding tone but playful.
“Mother always said I needed more spanking than I got from her.” Said Jim chuckling a little.
“Oh, I bet you were a real live wire. Probably made her gray before her time. Probably you will do the same to me also.” She said.
“Probably.” Said Jim a Cheshire cat smile starting on his lips.
“See you later Capitan.” Said Nevada. “Or do I need permission to go now?”
“You may go. See ya later Lieutenant.” Said Jim. She walked out of his office.
Jim smiled and shook his head as she was doing also down the hall. The ice was broken. They could at least now be themselves around each other cordially and respectfully though at work. However; he though getting her out away from work he might have just now bit more than he could eventually chew.
“That is some woman. So she has plans to sit right here on my lap does she? The next time she comes in here I’ll clear that place off for her on my desk to sit down and trump her.” Said Jim to himself.
She walked down to dispatch and sat at her desk. “I bet he will clean that place I sat down on off so I can sit there. I have him. Be prepared Capitan Brass. I plan on sitting on your lap fairly soon.”
The rest of the night had been routine a couple of calls out of the building for Jim but nothing really gory for a change. Which was welcomed. He had called back to the station a few times, Nevada taking the calls but they had been all business. When his lunch break came he walked down to the break room to get his lunch. She was there warming hers.
“Hi Lieutenant.” Jim said as she turned around.
“Hello Capitan. Breaking for lunch?” She asked.
“Yes.” He said going to the refrigerator and pulling out a brown paper sack.
“Care to have lunch with me?” She asked as her lunch in the microwave stopped heating.
“Ok. But I was just going to go back down to my office.” He said.
“Let me guess Bologna sandwich and chips?” She asked.
“Yes.” he said. She brought out from the microwave something that smelled heavenly.
“I have more than enough Carne Guisada for the two of us. Would you enjoy eating a hot meal instead of that cold one?” She asked.
Jim smiled and put the sandwich back into the refrigerator. “It sure smells good. You make that yourself?”
“I did.” She said getting a plastic fork and giving him a taste of the dish she had.
The meat melted in his mouth and the spices tickled his taste buds. “Oh this is good Lieutenant. You are a very good cook.” He said as he put his fork into the container she had for more.
“Gracious.” She said as she took a bigger spoon and gave him some of the dish on a plate.
“No, thank you for keeping my day out of the ordinary.” Said Jim.
Just then Greg Saunders came racing down the hall. He had smelled the Carne Guisada also. “Nevada is that what I think I smell?” He said popping his head into the break room.
“It is Greg. Come have some with us.” She said sweetly. “I know you love this.”
“I do Nevada. You are a great cook with all the Flan and other dishes you bring to share with me……..umm I mean us.” Said Greg seeing Captain Brass was sitting with a plate full of the dish himself. “Hi Captain.”
“Hi Greg.” Said Jim. “So she does this all the time?”
“Almost every night Nevada brings something new and spicy in for us to try.” Said Greg.
“I’m sure she does.” Quipped Jim. Nevada smiled knowingly at him. “Well, you are new and this is a little spicy.”
“Uh ah.” She said filling a plate for Greg who was waiting somewhat like a child, and an impatient child at that, for his portion.
“Nevada is a miracle in the kitchen.” Said Greg. She put down the plate of food for him. “Gracious Nevada.”
“Da Nada.” She said as she went to fill her plate.
“Out of the kitchen too Greg.” Said Jim his mouth half full of food. “She should gto tto the restaurant business.”
“Fellows I am still in the room.” She said.
“Oh we know. Greg and I were agreeing on our assessment of the food.” Said Jim. “Sorry if it seemed rude.”
“That is all right.” She said sitting down with them and eating.
Not much was said. They were too busy eating the wonderful food she had prepared.
“That was a real treat Lieutenant.” Said Jim as he took his plate over to the garbage can and threw it in.
“It sure was Nevada. Your husband is a lucky man.” Said Greg.
“Oh I am not married Greg. Nor have I ever been.” Said Nevada smiling at him.
“Then your boyfriend must be lucky.” Greg offered. Greg was hedging.
“I do not have one of those either Greg.” She said.
“Well then………..” Said Greg seeing his chance to move in.
“Amigo, please do not start that. We are friends. Besides I am probably old enough to be your mother.” She said as Jim started to chuckle.
“You would be surprised.” Said Greg. “I’m almost 30.”
“Well, I had you for 20 maybe. What did you say you did?” she asked.
“DNA Lab. It’s my domain.” He said. Jim knew he was trying to make time with her. It was apparent that she didn’t go for younger men. However; he hoped that she would go for a more mature man.
“Greg. I think the lady likes you but………”
“Yeah, well I know.” He said.
“Oh Greg, we are compadres. We are friends. It is not like what you think.” She said.
“I know. Same story. I’m too young for every woman here. Or I look like I am.” Said Greg.
“Oh you, your incorrigible. What am I going to do with you?” She asked.
“Well………….”Greg started. Jim shot Greg a look as to not start with the uses for him. “Sorry. I just thought that since we…….” Nevada went over to him. She hugged him. She knew that would be enough for Greg to simmer down.
“Greg you are a wonder and a good friend. Please do not take my answer negatively. There is a woman out there for you. One that will have her full heart to give.” She said. In heels she was a little bit taller than Greg. She had put his head on her chest.
“Ok Nevada. But, I still want to be friends.” Said Greg taking in all he could from the embrace she had given him. Jim pretended not to look. He knew what Greg was feeling all too well. Many a woman had shot him down over the years. But Nevada did care about Greg’s feelings. That said a lot for her in Jim’s book. She took Greg’s face in her hands and smiled at him giving him a small kiss on the cheek.
“Now Mi Amigo I know you have things to do. We will see each other again soon.” She said putting her arm over his shoulder.
“I do have things to do. You know Nevada if you ever change your mind I’m here. Just down the hall. I don’t feel bad anymore. In fact…..I feel pretty good getting all that attention.” Said Greg.
“I feel good at having given it. I never mean to hurt anyone.” She said.
“It’s ok Nevada. I’ll see ya later. You going to the picnic tomorrow for the night crew?” He asked.
“I’ll be there.” She said as she let Greg go.
“Good. Later!” Said Greg. He walked down the hall a little lighter for some reason. It was the way she had let him down. Easy, knowing he was still her friend.
“That was hard for you wasn’t it?” Came Jim’s voice behind her.
“It was. It is not that I would not go out with him. I just feel too old for him. He needs a woman that can give him children. I am too old for that now.” She said.
“Well, I think you did a nice job letting him down. He matters to you.” Said Jim.
“Everyone matters Capitan.” She said.
“I see that.” Said Jim. “All goofing off aside here. When it’s my turn to be shot down I’m not going to worry so much.”
“Why would you think that I would shoot you down?” She asked.
“It’s the way of life Lieutenant.” Said Jim. “Thanks for the lunch.njoynjoyed ever bite.”
“Capitan, you do not have to worry about being shot down as you call it. You are very welcome about the meal.” She offered.
“That’s good to know.” Said Jim. “Besides we kind of have a wager going on about sitting on my lap. I would really hate to miss that.”
“I am sure you would. As would I.” She said as she started to put things up.
“So you are going to that picnic are you?” He asked.
“For a little while.” She said. “It will break my day off up enough.”
“Got the cop life do you? Nothing going on but at work. I know that too well. Been doing this for over 30 years.”
“Yes. Unfortunately, that is the case Capitan. I have been doing this 16 years.” She said.
“And you never married?” He asked.
“I was never asked.” She said.
“That’s a little hard to swallow. But, I know it’s the truth. I know why too. Men are afraid to approach a woman as beautiful as you are without feeling a little……..”
“Thank you for the compliment. Yes. I know.” She began. She looked over at him. “But you do not seem the type to be afraid.”
“I’m not. Hey that’s why we are talking.” Said Jim. “I was a little intimidated by you at first but I got over that. I’m too old to let that young stud stuff bother me.”
“That is a good thing Capitan.” She said. “So is the older more mature stud stuff bothering you?”
“Beautiful and perceptive.” Said Jim chuckling and smiling at her. “Not really. I know who I am and I know what’s allowed. Tends to stop the ringing in your ears after your jaws been jacked a few times.”
She looked at him a little astonished at his honesty. But she liked that. Plus he had a sense of humor with all his maturity.
“I am sure of that Capitan. But you need not worry. There will be no jaw jacking with me. Since you have a more mature point of view then you know to ask first.” She said.
“And the wisdom to know when not too. However; since the ice has been broken between us and I do believe I’m right about that, why don’t we drop the titles? Makes for more friendly conversation.” Said Jim.
“That is agreeable with me. My name is Nevada. I am sure you heard Greg call me that.” She said.
“I did. Seems a little ironic that your name is Nevada and you are living in Nevada. By the way I’m Jim.” He said.
“Seems a bit ironic. The name and the state. All right then, Jim it is.” She said.
“I need to go and get some more paper work done but I did enjoy eating with yod tad talking a little. You’re a great cook and a fine lady, Nevada.” Said Jim.
“Gracious Jim. You are a fine caballero yourself.” She said.
“What’s that?” He asked.
“A gentleman.” She said.
“Oh well, as long as I have you fooled…..”He chuckled. “But thanks.”
“Da Nada.” She said she shoved his shoulder playfully.
“I guess you are going to have to teach me Spanish.” He said.
“I would be most happy too. Shall I see you later?” She asked.
“You can bet on that.” Said Jim.
With that he turned to go to his office. Nevada went back to her station both a little happier.
As the shift ended Jim was walking out to his car. Nevada came up behind him touching his shoulder he turned around.
“Hello Amigo.” She said cheerfully.
“Hi Nevada. So, you going home?” He asked.
“Si, I have a lot of things to cook for tomorrow.” She said.
“Oh so we will be sampling some more fare from your kitchen eh?” He asked.
“Si, I’m making some Chili Con Quaso, some potato salad and some other things I have not thought of as yet.” She said.
“If I wasn’t full of the meal you shared with me I would be hungry. Do you need any help with that?” He asked.
“No, but thank you for asking.” She said.
“I would offer you breakfast or at least a cup of coffee but if you have all that to make up then I will save that for later.” He said.
“I would go but……as you say I have things to do. But I will be there at the picnic tomorrow afternoon.” She said. “Oh here, please take the rest of this. There is only a plate full left. If it goes home with me I will forget. You can at least have lunch on me tomorrow.” She handed him the container with what was left of the Carne Guisada.
“Thanks. A prepared meal……me not having to do it is another treat.” He said taking the container from her.
“I will see yomoromorrow.” She said as they got to her car. He opened the door for her and she got in.
“I’ll look forward to that.” He said.
“As will I. Hasta la Vista.” She said.
“See ya later.” He said closing the door after she got in. She turned the ignition on and he stood back a little as she pulled out. She waved and he waved not meaning to look so silly doing it. He looked around and there was no one watching. Jim smiled and got into his own car put the container in thont ont seat.
“Yes things are looking up for you Jim Boy. How you fell into this briar patch is another thing. At least the briar patch is gorgeous. Just don‘t get a bunch of nettles in you.” He said to himself.
He turned his own ignition on and pulled out of his parking space and went on home. “At least you have lunch for yourself tomorrow and it’s going to be a good one. Nevada cooks in more ways than one.” He said.
