Summary:
His faith is rocky, his love and jealousy clash, and his grip on
sanity is slipping. This is Ben's journey into the darkness.
A/N:
A Ben centric fic, this story features Alec, Max, Logan and Zack as
well. The pairing is M/A but while the story revolves around them in a
sense, it's focus and emphasis is on the troubled twin.
A/N
2: Please
be aware that this story is meant to be dark. Not only dark, but
sexually explicit and in a few instances both hardcore and
frightening. Some scenes will include non-consensual sex. Please
proceed with caution.
This is an AU story. The setting is Season One where Max and Logan are
just friends, Logan has not been paralyzed, Alec has gone AWOL after a mission - met and got
together with Max - and Zack stayed with Max after 411 on the DL. This
is Pollo Loco rewritten Shay's style...

Part
1
They
lounged lazily on the worn couch in the living room of their
apartment. It was a cold, wintry night. The wind whipped through
the bare trees, tossing the branches in a frenzy against the
window, tapping to an eerie tempo.
Max was
snuggled close to Alec's chest, her head tucked under his chin
as one of his hands played with a strand of her hair, the other
tracing idle circles on her lower back. Zack was stretched out,
his head resting on the back of the sofa, his legs propped up on
the old coffee table they'd found in an abandoned house.
Ben was
huddled in the corner, knees bent, arms wrapped around almost as
if he were trying to protect himself from the cold pervading his
bones. He watched his family, content in their presence,
enveloped by the warmth and comfort their nearness provided.
It was
a typical evening scene. After dinner they had sat down to watch
a movie; some pre-Pulse horror film that suited the ominous mood
that dark, winter nights somehow managed to affect. It was his
kind of night, the type he enjoyed most. There was a magnetic
force that beckoned to him when the moon rose and the sun faded
into the gloom that spread across the city.
He rose
quietly from his place and turned to his siblings. "I'm
going for a walk. I'll be back late; don't wait up." He
lowered the hood of his sweatshirt to cover his face and pulled
on his jacket.
Their murmured acknowledgements left him feeling empty. It was at times like this that he felt as if he were only a ghost; like he wasn't there, never was and never would be.
Facing the chill, he stepped out into the driving snow and embraced the night.
| O | O | O |
The
movie was interrupted for a news break. Glancing around the
room and noting his brother's absence, Zack broke the stillness.
"Where's Ben?"
Alec
shrugged. "I think he said something about taking a
walk."
"In
this weather?" Max asked, surprised. She hadn't really paid
much attention to Ben all evening, too wrapped up in Alec to
care about the goings on around her. She felt a bit guilty at
ignoring her brother, but it wasn't as if they hadn't included
him in their activities.
Zack
stilled. "Alec," his urgent tone commanded the two
lovers' attention. "Turn up the volume," he said,
pointing at the television. Alec
increased the volume with the remote and the three of them
stared intently at the screen.
"This is Carol DeSarrio bringing you a breaking
news bulletin from SLN News, live at the scene. Earlier this evening, after two long and frightening days, the search for the missing Father Ian Grummins' has come to a tragic end. The late Father Grummins' body was found right here just
hours ago. This is what could only be described as the work of the devil; a brutal and gruesome act of violence perpetrated on a man of
the cloth.
"This is not the first murder of its kind. Our sources reveal that three other bodies have been found
earlier this month. Police have indicated that we could be looking at a new serial killer.
"These markings are believed to be the murderer's calling card."
The
camera zoomed in on the distinct lines of a barcode. The number
was indefinable. Max looked at Alec in panic and Zack rested a
hand soothingly on her arm.
"I'm
calling Logan. Maybe his buddy at the SPD can shed some light on
this," Zack said softly, rising from the couch and moving
toward the phone. He picked it up and dialed Logan's number.
"Logan?
Zack. You watching the news, buddy?" he glanced at the
television to see the reporter interviewing the police captain.
Alec
and Max had jumped off the couch and came to stand behind him.
They leaned in to listen to both sides of the conversation.
<<Hey,
Zack. Yeah. Kind of creepy. Got a look at that barcode, too. We
know the guy wasn't transgenic. Think it's Manticore trying to
scare you guys?>>
"Wouldn't
put it past them to try something like that. Probably hoping
we'll get sloppy. Any chance your buddy Sung at the SPD could get us
some info?"
<<Better
than that. A friend of mine, Dr. Beverly Shankar, will give us
access to the morgue. We can go tonight. She'll contact me when
it's safe.>>
"The
morgue? That's great. Let us know as soon as you can. We need to
find out who's barcode that is," Zack looked at Alec and Max who
nodded. "Thanks, Logan. I really appreciate this."
<<Anytime,
Zack. Say hi to Max and Alec for me.>>
"Will
do."
He hung
up the phone and shrugged. "Not much we can do but wait
until this Dr. Shankar gets in touch with Logan. You guys up for
watching the rest of the movie?" he indicated at the
television that displayed a screaming woman being chased by a
masked man wielding a sharp knife.
"Not
really. Whaddaya say, Maxie? You up for a ride?" Alec
raised an eyebrow as he looked at his girlfriend.
She
smiled gratefully. He always knows what I need. "Just the thing to clear my head. Let me
go change." She hurried off to their room and closed the
door behind her.
Zack
tapped Alec on the shoulder and the other man whirled to face
him. "Alec, I don't want to scare Maxie, but I'm thinking
maybe someone's got something on one of us. And I don't think
it's Manticore that's trying to smoke us out." Alec nodded
dumbly. He agreed with Zack on that. "I'm gonna head out. It's my turn to patrol. You guys
have fun. Keep your phones on. I'll let you know as soon as
there's any news."
"Sure
thing. And when Ben gets back, fill him in, will ya? This isn't
exactly the kinda thing you wanna go telling a guy over the
phone. Especially someone as - sensitive - as Ben."
Zack
clapped Alec on the back, nodded and exited the apartment.
| O | O | O |
Alec
settled down on the couch to wait. Hitting the 'power' button on
the remote, he leaned back, worry etched across his face.
The
only ones on the outside are the '09ers. Well, and me. To what
purpose would Manticore brand an Ordinary? It doesn't make
sense.
He squeezed his eyes tightly shut. If Zack's right though,
Maxie will take this hard.
Alec
tried to focus on something less stressful, but failed
miserably. If it wasn't Max he was worrying about, it was Ben.
The two of them were ticking time-bombs, each in their own way.
With Max he never knew what would set her off, though he'd had
great success at sparking her with his words and actions in the
past. I'm glad we're finally past that, he thought with a
wry smile. Since they'd started going out, she'd been less
abusive toward him.
Ben.
Alec didn't know how to categorize his brother. For years
he'd been the bane of his existence. Manticore had put Alec
through hell when his twin had escaped. At first, he'd held it
against him, blaming Ben for all his pain. But after getting to
know Max, he'd changed his estimation of the man. Being on the
outside so young, not knowing how the world worked, had done a
number on Ben. But looks could be deceiving and Alec knew that
his twin wasn't as happy as he pretended to be. If there was one
thing Alec knew, had himself perfected over the years, it was
the clever facade of 'I'm always alright'. And Ben was sporting
the same mask.
| O | O | O |
Night
shrouded the city in dark shadows. Two figures emerged from the
darkness surrounding the decrepit building and climbed on
identical motorcycles. He watched as they nodded to each other,
a sliver of moon filtering through the falling snow, dancing
across their faces to reveal the two
lovers' shining eyes and shy smiles.
Ben
watched as Alec reached out to caress Max's cheek, and when he
strained, he could hear her answering purr. In synch, they kick
started and revved their engines, speeding off into the inky
blackness. His eyes narrowed to tight slits as he watched them
fade into obscurity.
Ben
pulled back into the bushes, deep in thought. When he'd first
come to Seattle, he'd been tailing Zack. His big brother, his
CO, his friend; the one he'd looked up to for as long as he
could remember. Zack had taken off in the middle of the night
without saying a word, leaving Zane in charge. Zane,
he thought. Always someone
else, never me. I was never the one allowed to shoulder
responsibility. He knew what they thought of him, how they
saw him. I was
the sensitive one, not strong enough to stand on my own. For
years he'd been known as nothing more than a follower. But what
hurt Ben the most was that his own family didn't believe he was
capable of leadership. Were they right? I'm beginning to wonder.
He
glanced idly around, noting the silence of the winter night. Had
he looked closely he would have seen the figure on the roof,
would have noticed the man's eyes squinting in concentration.
But Ben's mind was on other things, namely Zack and Max.
Zack
had made a complete ass out of himself. He'd applied for work in
Seattle, hoping that as a bike messenger he might have better
access all 'round and somehow, find Max in the throngs of people
milling about the city. Ben had followed him, standing as he
always did, the loner in the shadows, watching and always
listening.
Over
the years, he'd perfected his abilities. He could mimic and
shadow any target, blending in so that they'd never know he was
there. It
was how we were trained, Max and I. Hunters, trackers, so
extremely capable we outsmarted our prey every time. There
had been talk, even back before the escape, that he and Max
would have topped everyone at Manticore. They could stand still
for hours without moving a muscle, absorbing, cataloguing and
storing facts for future use, and not even feel the
after-effects. We still can. Maxie and I were a team. We
should be a team.
Ben
sighed deeply. He remembered everything. He could recall every
detail. Like the shape of Maxie's eyes, the
exact color of her hair, that special smile she reserved only
for me. But Zack was a fool. He spent an entire day in our
little sister's company not even knowing who she was, when I had
no doubt from the moment I laid eyes on her. Even after
years of being apart, he knew his sister right away. They'd
always had that connection. He felt it deep inside. The ache,
the longing...meeting up with her after all this time had made everything feel
right again.
But
things hadn't been the same. Alec had escaped Manticore and come
to Seattle. He'd met Max and they'd fallen in love. His little
brother now had what Ben had always considered his: Max.
And
now, months later, Ben found himself once again cloaked in
shadow, watching from a distance as his sister, his partner, his
- desired - counterpart, lived a life in which he played
no part of consequence.
Shoving
his hands into his pockets, Ben lowered his head against the
wind and flurrying snow. He put one foot in front of the other,
setting a steady pace, as he set off down the street.
| O | O | O |
Zack
pressed back against the cold brick wall as he surveyed the
street below. He was on his usual perch, the rooftop opposite
their apartment building. It was his nightly watch, his patrol.
He was on the look out for danger, anything out of place, that
might threaten his family.
His
eyes swept the dark street and he caught sight of Max and Alec
leaving the building. He smiled to himself as he watched Alec's
gentleness towards his little sister. She deserved to be happy.
Alec was perfect for her. They'd gotten off to a rocky start,
but he'd grown to admire the other man.
Zack
spotted a lone figure lurking below. He froze, zeroing in on the
still form and sighing with relief as he recognized Ben. At
second glance, he noticed his brother's rigid posture, his
narrow slatted eyes and pursed lips. Ben's face held a predatory
look and it sent shivers down Zack's spine.
What
are you thinking, bro? Why are you spying?
Ben had
been acting differently of late and it was giving Zack cause for
concern. Ben had withdrawn even deeper into himself. Always a
loner, quiet, thoughtful and sensitive, in recent weeks he had
come to speak only when spoken to.
Tell
me what's going on with you, Ben. Let me make it better like I
always do. I can't protect you if you don't let me in.
Zack
watched as Ben stepped out of the bushes, turned and walked
away. He climbed down from his perch and after a moment's
hesitation, followed his brother at a safe distance.
| O | O | O |
Ben
climbed to the top of the Space Needle. The sight of the city
basking in twilight was breathtaking. The expanse below twinkled
brighter than the stars above. He closed his eyes, taking in the
quiet serenity that surrounded him. His mind was in turmoil and
his quest for peace was becoming a burden. His
deeds were closing in on him, the darkness threatening to
shatter his shaky faith. His self-confidence had long ago wavered, the
pressure too much to bear, and he had acceded to the cries of
his insecurities calling for a
protector.
He
thought back to when he had let the beast free and began to hunt and kill,
unbeknownst to his family and friends. He would disappear for days at a time,
moving from place to place, seeking out men of faith; faith he
had lost, faith he longed to find again. But he was beginning to
doubt that She was worthy of his devotion for She repeatedly
failed those who trusted in Her. Ben's Blue Lady was fading into
his past while he began to embrace a turbulent and frightening
new path. The path of a man who knew no remorse, who felt no
need to apologize for his deeds.
With
each day the darkness inside of him grew heavier until the spark
that once made him the brother Alec, Max and Zack knew and loved was
all but extinguished. The sweet boy who'd grown into a troubled man had
become a conscienceless killer; stalker of prey, inflictor of
punishment and enforcer of death. He was the strong one now, and
the evidence of his kills he flaunted before his former
deity.
The
snow had let up and the slope of the Needle was slippery. X5
though he was, Ben almost lost his balance. Stepping back
hastily, he climbed through the broken window and into the
abandoned restaurant, making his way to the stairwell. He had
business to attend to, and it was a perfect night for it. Not
many people would be out and about on a night like this. And
that suits me fine, he thought. The Blue Lady and I need
to have a chat.
