*Twisted Fate*
It was going to be her fourth
year of high school and yet nothing was going to be the same as the first,
second and third year.
The first year had been rather
ordinary and Elizabeth Hawke had found herself firmly established as the
teacher’s pet, someone who was better off ignored then payed attention too. She
had been teased and even Toby Johnson, a childhood friend and the man she had a
crush on, had been completely uninterested in her. Her mother had said that
everything would get better, she would see.
In her second year, Elizabeth and
Toby had been turned into geniuses and war had been waged as each settled into
their own trios. She’d still been trying to get his attention but nothing had
worked!
During third year, things began going to hell. Elizabeth
and her trio- Verity and Garth- had once again waged war on Toby and Russ, who
had gained Toby’s cousin, Sacha, into their group as Dina left. It seemed that
everything was going to go just like it had the previous year with Toby
crushing on another girl, Nikki- but, unlike other times, another had gotten
involved. Nikki’s brother, Jack, was on Toby and Elizabeth’s tail and they were
forced to put so much energy into stopping him.
Third year just seemed determined
to get worse when, unbeknownst to everyone, Elizabeth’s mother, Colleen, had
passed away late in the year and she had been left with her father. A father
who had quickly become rather abusive.
On the other hand, Toby’s mother,
Isabelle, had returned home and been devastated to learn that her long time
friend, Colleen had passed away. Still, things had stayed quiet and the end of
the year seen Elizabeth abused by her father, betrayed by Jack, unwanted by
Toby and friendless when Verity and Garth abandoned her for her ‘misdeeds’.
Now fourth year was beginning. At
least Jack and Nikki were gone.
Elizabeth walked into the school
grounds, pushing longer blonde hair behind her ear as blue eyes surveyed
everyone around her. She’d managed to move her lab again, settling underground
in an area that she had created herself- it was perfect.
A heavy sigh escapes her and a
sharp pain settles in her ribs, piercing through her mind as she struggles to
keep moving, acting normally.
If only her mother were still
here…
“Sorry,” mumbles a familiar voice
as she’s jostled, biting back a cry of pain as her ribs flare to life once
more. Her eyes meet Toby’s as his turn cold, turning away from the girl without
another world.
It seems to be that the first
week passes by so quickly and Elizabeth feels so alone, continually finding it
difficult to concentrate as her bruises resonate with pain. Her father had
started using the belt when he got really angry, which seemed to be very often
when he was drinking, and the blood dripping down her spine was a constant reminder
of his actions.
By the end of the first three
weeks, Elizabeth had begun feeling constantly light headed and feverish, her
grades dropping.
Fifth week passed and her father
had begun demanding that she stay home some days.
Could no one see that she was in
pain? Was Toby truly that blind?
She pulled back into herself, not
wanting to involve anyone else in her pain and not even when her father and
Toby’s parents decided to get together for a barbeque did she really show much
interest in anything…
“Elizabeth, dear, can you please help Toby with setting
the table?” Isabelle asked as she continued to work on the salads.
As Elizabeth’s godmother,
Isabelle had always taken an extra interest in the quiet blonde girl, noticing
that in the past year she’d seemed to loose confidence and become increasingly
unhappy. Then again, who could blame her? Her mother had died rather suddenly.
Walking into the room where Toby and Russ were collecting
the dishes, Elizabeth quietly approaches, “I can’t believe your parents invited
her! At least she’s not bothering us again!” Russ whines to Toby as they count
out the plates.
She clears her throat and the
boys look up, “what do you want, Elizabeth?” Toby snaps.
“Your mother asked me to help
with setting the table,” Elizabeth responds, her tone cool and unemotional as
she collects the plates. It hurts to hear that they dislike her so much- it’s
different now and she just really wants someone to talk to. But who can she
tell about what her father does to her? It’s so shameful!
Lately, it’s even been harder
to Hyperfunction, her mind seemingly unwilling to move as she struggled to keep
her wits about her, to escape thinking at all. All it ever led to was memories
of what happened every night.
When lunch is finished and
Elizabeth is helping to take the dishes away her father wraps an arm around her
gently. The slight squeeze is warning enough when she flinches and she holds
herself still as her father smiles at the two boys, “honey, why don’t you go
inside with the boys? We’re just going to be talking out here and it will
probably get very boring.”
Brown eyes focus on Elizabeth
and Toby begins to question the flinch he seen- is Elizabeth still that upset
about Jack? Had she fought with her father?
A fake smile touches her lips
and Elizabeth nods as Isabelle and Phil, Toby’s parents, smile gently. “Sure,”
she whispers as she stands, wandering inside ahead of the boys as Russ drags
his feet behind Toby.
They don’t want to spend time
with her and she knows it- so uncertain as to how she should act and what she
should do. They don’t want her anywhere near them!
Toby and Russ sit there
talking, discussing some ‘hot girl’ at school and Elizabeth finds that she
doesn’t even have the energy to care. Her back and bottom ache with the belting
she’d been given only hours before they came here. Her mind shies away from the
severity of the beating and she shuts the door firmly on those thoughts, tears
jumping to her eyes as she blinks them back.
“Elizabeth?” Toby asks,
standing beside her as she stares into space.
Jumping in her seat, she turns
to meet Toby’s discerning gaze, blue eyes wide with her surprise. She hadn’t
even heard him approach!
Stepping closer, Toby sits
beside her and she tenses, “are you okay, Elizabeth?”
“Of course,” she responds
coolly, nodding jerkily. “Why wouldn’t I be fine?” She continues, her eyes
skittering away from him as she focuses on a point outside of the window,
dismissing the man.
He sighs, a heavy exhale of
breath, as his hand gently touches her own, “Elizabeth, if you…”
“Toby!” Russ interrupts,
glaring at the blonde girl, “come on! The DVDs loaded!”
“I’ll be there in a second,
Russ,” Toby responds. He glances at the young girl once more, hesitating only a
moment before following his friend upstairs once more. At the steps, he pauses.
“Do you want to…?”
She shakes her head and Toby
leaves- she couldn’t ever tell him about this. It just isn’t possible…
It was getting harder and harder to slip away from her
classes, she was missing most days at school with her father demanding that she
stay home and the injuries holding her back. She was beginning to run out of
excuses as to why she couldn’t play sport and was away from school so often.
Over the Bunsen burner, the balm
she’d recently created to increase the rate of healing was bubbling away
happily and Elizabeth turned away with a tired sigh. She was using her old lab
again; the paint in her new lab was drying at the moment.
Pulling off the jacket, she turns
her back to the mirror that’s still hanging on the opposite wall. The
halter-top she wears doesn’t even begin to conceal the lashes.
Something was wrong.
“Elizabeth?” Murmurs a new, shaky
and quiet voice. Verity! What the hell is she doing here?
She turns her stricken gaze to
the interloper, noting the widened eyes that are focused on the reflection.
Slowly, Verity’s eyes rise to meet Elizabeth’s, “Elizabeth?” Verity murmurs,
voice trembling, “what happened?”
The jacket’s quickly pulled back
on and eyes narrow on the other woman, “what are you doing here, Verity?”
“I wanted to apologise- we’ve
been friends for so long and…” Verity fell silent.
A moment passes as Elizabeth and
Verity lock eye contact, the unspoken apology easily flickering between the two
one-time friends.
“Elizabeth,” Verity murmurs as
she steps forward, “what happened?”
It’s so tempting to tell her, she wants to so badly! Can she trust
someone else with her secret? The secret that she wants to share so much that
it hurts?
Moments later, Verity is sworn to secrecy as she learns the
true horrors in life…
