~~oOo~~
“So what changed your mind?” Ruby asked quietly.
“I don’t want to be doing this when I’m old,” Sam replied as
he got into the car.
Neither of them spoke as they drove through the darkness,
Ruby’s eyes on the road, Sam’s gaze trained on some far-off point outside the
passenger window. To Sam it seemed to
take forever to get to the old warehouse Ruby had chosen for tonight’s little
excursion.
A half hour later, they still hadn’t said a word to each
other, save for a few quiet pointers given by Ruby. Sam helped the possessed man he’d saved to his feet, and together
they took him to the front entrance.
Once the poor man had regained his bearings, he wandered off back to
what would hopefully be an uneventful life from this point on.
“You’re sure Castiel and Uriel won’t know?” Sam said, slanting a look at the dark-haired
demon.
Ruby smiled faintly, holding up a hex bag. “I’m sure.”
“Good. Then we’re
done here.” Sam tilted his head back,
staring up with a thoughtful frown, before he turned and headed toward Ruby’s
car.
“Sam, wait,” Ruby moved forward, one hand curled around his
bicep. “Don’t you wanna…celebrate or
something?” She gazed up at him with an expression that was almost coy.
Sam inhaled sharply, glaring down at the hand on his arm, though
he didn’t pull away. “You want to
celebrate, go buy yourself a bottle of champagne,” he snapped, looking down at
her coldly.
Ruby blinked at the expression on his face, slowly releasing
her hold before she moved to stand in front of him. “Sam, what’s wrong?” She
reached up, one hand cupping his cheek.
“Why are you so angry, is it because of that?” Ruby gestured with her free hand toward the empty room behind
them. “Look, you know you have to do-”
She gasped in surprise as her hand was slapped away.
“Don’t touch me,” Sam growled, turning around and stalking
away.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Ruby demanded, running ahead of him and getting in his path again. “You…we haven’t…” She shook her head,
looking away. “You haven’t wanted to
touch me…” Ruby looked back up, realization dawning. “Since Dean came back.
That’s it, isn’t it?”
Sam gazed down at her silently, his expression cool, before
he brushed past her.
Ruby’s laugh was almost cruel as she took a step back,
staring after him disbelievingly. “So
what, your brother’s back, so suddenly you don’t need to get laid anymore? Is he gonna take over the job for me?” She shouted at his retreating back.
“No, now that he's back, I don't need you anymore, at least
not for that.” Sam sneered. “I made it
clear even after you wormed your way into my bed, that I still didn’t trust you
as far as I could throw you. I know
you're just using me and these powers to serve your own agenda."
“Sam, I’m trying to help you!” Ruby cried, taking a step closer.
Sam continued as if she hadn’t spoken. “I'm nothing more than a tool to you, and
you were nothing more than a tool to me. So I guess we're even.”
He kept walking away, but instead of heading for the car, he began to
make his way to the road. "I'll
continue using you to develop my powers, but we're done being fuck
buddies."
“Sam, why are you doing this?” Ruby asked, sounding as if
she were near tears as she watched him, arms folded over her chest.
He turned around and glared at her, eyes narrowed. “You want to know why I’m doing this?” Sam hissed.
“Because I’m tired of doing the right things, and still losing
everything, just like Jay. So now I’m going to do some things that aren’t so
right, so I can protect the only person in this world that I really care
about.” That said, he turned and strode away, pulling out his cell and hitting
speed dial. “The only thing I have done right, is stop letting you use
sex to manipulate me.”
Ruby watched with an almost stricken expression, listening to him speak quietly
into the phone. “Where are you going?”
“To see the only person that matters right now,” Sam answered, before he
disappeared around a corner.
~~oOo~~
Dean looked up and nodded as Sam strode into the bar, making
his way over to join Dean at the table.
“Hey, Sammy, what changed your mind?”
He glanced over at his brother, one eyebrow raised.
“A couple of things,” Sam said, eyes darting around the
room, landing on the bartender and waitress that were obviously eyeing them
both. “How long have those two been
checking you out?”
Dean blinked in surprise, then laughed softly, voice still a
bit rough from nearly being hanged earlier that evening. “The bartender’s been watching me for a while,
the waitress though, she’s new, I think she’s givin’ you the eye, dude,” he
smirked, leaning over and bumping his shoulder against Sam’s as the waitress
started over toward their table.
“What’ll ya have?”
The petite brunette smiled sweetly at Sam, eyes darting down over his
shoulders and chest before she directed her gaze back to his face.
“Two beers, and some hot wings,” Dean said, then looked over
as Sam bumped his shoulder.
“Two pitchers, and two orders of wings, actually,” he said,
giving the girl his own version of the patented Winchester smile.
“Ooh, big spender, huh?” She teased, grinning back at
him.
“Yeah, well,” Sam shrugged and put an arm around Dean’s
shoulders. “It’s my big brother’s
birthday tomorrow, so I thought I’d take him out and show him a good
time.” As he spoke, Sam let his eyes
trail over the brunette’s slender frame, giving her another slow, lazy
smile.
The girl stared at him a moment and blushed, blue eyes wide,
teeth nibbling at a plump lower lip before she gave a start and nodded. “Right, two pitchers, two wings, coming
right up.”
Sam watched her walk away, studying the sashay of her
hips. He continued to watch as the
waitress and the bartender spoke and the other woman, a curvaceous redhead,
gave Dean another long once-over.
“Looks like it’s gonna be a good night,” he gave Dean a sidelong look.
Dean stared at Sam for several moments, his eyes wide, mouth
open. Finally he sat up straighter,
leaned forward and stared into Sam’s eyes.
“Christo!”
Sam threw back his head and laughed, arm sliding off Dean’s
shoulders to rest across the back of the other man’s chair. “Dude, I’m not possessed!”
“Then who the hell are you, and what have you done with my
Sammy?” He demanded, glaring at the
other man.
Sam smiled softly at the way Dean had referred to him. “Your Sammy, huh?” He teased the other man
with a smirk.
Dean blinked and sat back, eyes darting around to look
everywhere but his brother. “You know
what I meant.” After a moment he met
Sam’s eyes again. “Dude, why you actin’
like this?”
“Like what?” Sam
asked, eyebrows raised.
“Like…you?”
Dean’s mouth opened and closed silently a few times as he
turned his head away. One hand came up to
rub at the back of his neck, as he shrugged lightly. “Yeah.”
“Well, tomorrow is your birthday, isn’t it?” Sam asked, his head tilted to one side. He looked up as the waitress brought their
beer, telling them their wings were coming right up. He nodded and thanked her, again watching as she sauntered off,
hips swaying enticingly.
“Yeah…” Dean said,
eyeing his brother warily.
“So, given that it’s…technically your first birthday again,
I say we spend tonight drinking till at least midnight, then tomorrow, we
celebrate your birthday in true Dean Winchester fashion, nursing hangovers with
a little hair of the dog, and dealing with awkward morning-after moments before
we go out for pie.” Sam smirked, holding up his glass.
Dean thought about that for a moment, then grinned widely,
holding up his glass. “Awesome,” he
said, as his glass clinked against Sam’s.
So, what’d you think?
I was driven to write this by the fact that I hated Ruby doing that
little sway and trying to get into Sam’s personal space when she was talking
about how ‘it’ made him feel >.< and by all those pretty Dean B-day
picspams on LJ XD.
