Interlude
The last time Merlin remembers being nervous about opening the door to his bedroom was when he knew there was a large dog on the other side. This time it's more about what he thinks is on the other side. What he'll see. What he'll have to say.
Gaius isn't around. Merlin guesses he's seeing to the knights wounded by the griffin. But he wishes Gaius were behind him to tell him to stop being foolish and maybe push him forward.
The thought almost makes him smile. It also makes him open the door.
Lancelot is stood on the other side of the small room, looking out of the window. He's still in the chain mail and wrings the leather gloves between his hands.
"I heard you," Merlin says, feeling awkward where he stands. "What you said about leaving but," he feels selfish and it crushes into his chest, "but is there anything I might be able to do to convince you to stay?"
"No." Lancelot shakes his head. "No, I'm sorry Merlin. This is just how it has to be."
"Yeah." Merlin nods and finds he's started fiddling with his belt, threading it through his fingers.
"But Merlin," Lancelot turns to face him. He looks thoughtful, sorrowful, but smiles. "Thank you. For what you did for me."
With a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, Merlin takes those few strides to cross the room. All he can think of doing is pushing himself into Lancelot chest, into the chain mail he wears. It's the same type he's pulled on and off Arthur's body so many times before, but this one feels colder. When he looks up past Lancelot's shoulder, he can see the dark view of Camelot and the night sky through the window.
"At least stay until sunrise," he says. "It's too dangerous to travel at night."
He hears a deep breath escape Lancelot and feels his fingers rake through his hair. After short consideration, he answers: "Very well. But only until then."
Merlin winds his arms across Lancelot's back and worries he won't be able to let go.
---
It turns out Merlin was able to let go because he had to go down to the kitchens and pick up the tray of food for Prince Arthur. It had been a long time since he last ate. Not since before he and the knights had fought the griffin in Camelot.
When he enters Arthur's chambers, Merlin finds him sat on the fur lined chair. He has it facing the wall and stares into it. The chain mail he wore is draped over the far end of the table and Arthur had pulled on a red shirt in its place. The look on his face is very similar to what Merlin saw on Lancelot as he went into his bedroom. Arthur looks up at Merlin as he enters and then to the tray in his hands.
"I'm not hungry." He looks back at the wall.
"You need to get your strength back," Merlin says, approaching him. "That griffin was a hard opponent."
Arthur gives him a suspicious look. "How would you know?"
"I-" Merlin pauses for a moment before he babbles out quickly: "Lancelot told me."
Arthur still looks doubtful, but accepts it. Merlin places the tray down on the table but keeps holding it, not sure what else to do.
"Speaking of Lancelot," Arthur says and Merlin feels something in his stomach flutter uncomfortably. "Has he left yet?"
"No," Merlin replies. "He's staying until sunrise. It's too dangerous to leave at night."
"Good." Arthur nods. "Go and bring him here. There are a few last things I want to discuss with him."
As Merlin straightens, he starts to take the tray with him.
"Leave that."
Even if it's only for a moment, it feels good to smile.
---
In the time it took for Merlin to see to Arthur and then go back to his bedroom, Lancelot had also changed the chain mail for the shirt he wore upon first coming to Camelot. When Merlin informs him of Arthur's request, he visibly relaxes and looks happier. As they go through the hallways, they manage to talk. Awkwardly and only staying on a topic for a few sentences at a time, but it's something.
When Merlin leads Lancelot into the prince's chambers, Arthur stands. It pleases Merlin to see he's eaten some of the food brought to him. Lancelot steps forward but respectfully keeps his distance. Arthur has that look in his eye, the one which is there when he has something serious in mind.
"Lancelot," as he begins his voice sounds heavy and he frowns. He alternates between crossing his arms across his chest, letting them hang at his side and hooking his thumbs into his belt. "I have a respect for my father's rule. He's done great things for Camelot."
Lancelot bows his head. "Yes sire."
"But you cause me reconsider some things. I don't look forward to the day of my father's passing, but when I am king some things will change."
From where he remains by the door, Merlin looks from Arthur to Lancelot and starts to feel hopeful.
"The first code of Camelot will still stand, but I'll be willing to make those rare exceptions when they come along." He steps closer to Lancelot, "So I hope you don't settle for becoming a knight under anyone else."
"If I did that, I was never worthy of Camelot from the start."
Merlin feels himself grinning but doesn't care because it sounds like the best thing he's ever heard. His chest swells as he watches Arthur take another step forward and settle his hand in Lancelot's hair, then draw it down the side of his face. When he rests his hand on his cheek, Lancelot turns his head to kiss his palm. Arthur allows him a second or so for that and then draws his hand away. He takes Lancelot's hair again and tugs gently to pull up his bowed head. When Merlin watches Arthur kiss Lancelot, his hands push against the outside of his thighs and his fingers squeeze. Something twists in his stomach, tingles between his legs and his mouth feels dry.
Then he sees Arthur raise his other hand and beckon him forward.
---
When Arthur kisses Lancelot, it's controlled. From Arthur's end, of course. He lightly pulls at his hair and Lancelot tilts his head back. When Arthur scrapes his teeth against Lancelot's lower lip, his mouth opens.
But when Merlin kisses Lancelot, it's different. His movements are quick, desperate and don't always reach his lips. Instead he finds himself kissing Lancelot's cheek, his chin or the corner of his mouth. But he doesn't care. He just needs that contact. Even with Lancelot on top of him, pressing him down into the sheets, it doesn't feel like enough.
It frustrates him that he can't push his heels down into Lancelot's back as he wants. He's tried but Arthur keeps knocking against his feet as he moves back and forth, thrusts his hips, pushes himself inside Lancelot and complains about Merlin being in the way. So he has to make do with pressing his ankles into Lancelot's sides and feel their movement.
The air around them is too hot and he can hardly breathe. Lancelot's on top of him, then there's Arthur and the weight of the pair of them pushes him down. There was little preparation, so it hurts as Lancelot rolls his hips and pushes himself further inside Merlin's body. Arthur is on top of Lancelot, one hand on his back and the other by Merlin's head. Sometimes his fingers clench at and pull Merlin's hair. As he moves, Lancelot's body is pushed down and, in turn, Merlin feels it inside him. But he tries not to show the hurt which comes with it. It's strange because while it's painful he knows he wants that feeling. Needs it.
When he moans, he's not sure what it's for at all; the pain or the pleasure. But he focuses on the pleasure as much as he can, even while the hot streaks of agony flash through his body and make his head buzz. He arches his back and pushes his hips up, against the weight upon them. When he does he can feel Lancelot's stomach move against his own erect cock. He can feel the heat and sweat of their bodies pressed together and keeps his ankles pressed against Lancelot's sides, feeling both his and Arthur's movements.
Merlin has to give up his desperate kisses when he's gasping and moaning far too much. He has to make do with clutching even harder at where he grips Lancelot's hair and shoulder. His head rolls to press and rub against Arthur's arm and he feels one finger lift to scratch at his hair.
Somehow he manages to keep his hips moving up to push himself up against Lancelot and feel that friction against his cock. He can feel the heat, practically throbbing as it pools between his legs. But he also hates the way his body needs it because the more he seeks that feeling the closer he comes to finishing it.
---
Something hits him in the face and Merlin wakes with a start. When he opens his eyes it's still dark but there's a light weight upon him. After a moment of blind groping, he manages to clutch at what feels like material over his face and pull it away. He has to shut his eyes again as the morning light suddenly invades his vision.
"Get dressed Merlin," Arthur says, sounding impatient. "You've been terrible at arriving on time. But even when we're in the same room, you're late."
He's become used to the light, so Merlin looks to Arthur, who's adjusting his belt. Then he looks down to see his blue shirt in his hands. It's only after he pulls it on then sits up and reaches down to retrieve his breeches when he realises that something's missing. He looks around as he pulls on the rest of his clothing but there's no trace of Lancelot in the room.
"Where's Lancelot?"
"He left." Arthur looks round to him, then away again. "Not too long ago. It's better this way, Merlin. You would've dragged it on too much. You know that."
Merlin feels his body go heavy as he pulls his jacket on over his shoulders. "I know." Something in his chest squeezes and his stomach flutters. "But... it isn't fair he should leave."
"Things aren't always fair." Arthur's voice is heavy. "And it was his choice."
Merlin nods and bites his bottom lip. When Arthur turns towards him, Merlin looks away and starts making the bed. It's expected of him as the manservant, after all. While he works, smoothing the sheets and re-arranging the pillows, he knows Arthur is watching him and it feels like his body is burning.
"It will take Lancelot a few moments to prepare a horse and I have something I need to do before anything else," Arthur says. "Our men took a great deal of damage last night and I need to see just how much. While I'm doing that, I'll allow you to watch Lancelot go if you really want. But it's best you just watch and don't approach him. The decision was hard enough as it is."
Merlin clenches the pillow he was shoving back into its case and turns to meet Arthur's eyes. "You'll let me do that?"
Arthur nods and pulls on his red jacket. "But not for long. There's a lot to do today."
Merlin absently places the pillow back and can feel himself smiling. He manages a rushed "thank you" before he hurries from the room.
---
Arthur must have let Lancelot keep the chain mail. All he can see is a helmet on his head and a red cape flowing behind him as he rides away. The sight gives Merlin hope. Lancelot will need the chain mail if he wants to become a great knight of Camelot.
All the same, his heart feels heavy as he watches Lancelot go. The further away he gets, the more Merlin wants to go after him and find a way to bring him back. But he knows it would do no good.
"There you are." Merlin jumps as he comes out of his thoughts. Gaius comes beside him, looking tired. He's been seeing to the wounded knights since they came back. "Where were you last night?"
Merlin feels a lump drop like a rock into his throat as he looks back out at Lancelot getting further away. "Just saying goodbye."
