Greg was aware of pain before he was even fully conscious. His head was throbbing, his right shoulder stung, nearly every muscle in his body felt strained, his rear end had not felt so sore since he lost his virginity seven years before, and a heavy weight draped over his waist and thighs. The young man began the tiring task of forcing his eyes open, only to snap them shut as the sunlight drifting into the room caused a fresh wave of pain to shoot through his skull and a nice douse of nausea to add itself to his list of nuisances.
Before the spiky-haired man could even begin to figure out who had kicked his ass and why, the weight around his waist tightened and pulled him toward something warm and solid behind him. He quickly realized that his scarred back rested against a strong chest while his head was tucked under a chiseled jaw. A firm bulge under his head told him that it was resting in the crook of a well-muscled arm. The bristle of hair on the hot, heavy object holding down his thigh told him it was someone else’s powerful leg draped over him.
Shifting his foot slightly, the CSI-in-training recognised the slippery feel of satin sheets, despite the fact that he owned none. Realizing that he was obviously in bed with someone, Greg decided to take a deep breath and try to figure out what had happened to him the previous night.
When he inhaled a very familiar blend of scents, Greg was not sure whether to laugh or cry because he realised that he was naked in a bed that smelled of sex and sweat with an equally nude Nick Stokes wrapped possessively around him.
This was either his greatest dream come true or his worst nightmare about to unravel.
Taking in a few more deep breaths and allowing Nick’s scent to calm him as it always did, Greg decided to start with the previous day and see where his memories took him…
While he missed having the old group around, the young trainee still maintained his enthusiasm for learning as well as his desire to become a CSI, and he gave the day’s case his all. Nick had surprised him as he was changing in the locker room by calling to say that they both had the next day off (making the younger man wonder how Nick knew his schedule) and to invite Greg to meet him at a bar the elder CSI had wanted to check out.
Greg had never liked the bar scene, preferring the music and energetic atmosphere of certain clubs, but he was not about to turn down the chance to spend time with Nick. Warrick, who Greg had started to see as a sort of mentor or big brother, joined them for the first round of beers before leaving to rest up for his shift the next day.
Once they were alone, Nick had ordered another round of beers as well as a couple shots of bourbon. There was a bit of a challenge in the Texan’s eyes along with a hint of nervousness and touch of guilt that confused Greg. The younger man normally did not drink hard liquor, which he was sure Nick knew, but something about that look in his friend’s eyes made Greg think that this was somehow important to Nick…
Greg accepted the wordless challenge and did his best to match his friend shot for shot, knowing he never stood a chance -Nick had a much higher alcohol tolerance than he did. Since Nick seemed to need this, the younger man swallowed his reservations along with the first shot and obliged his friend.
Greg decided he could scratch the headache and nausea from his mental list of current mysteries to be solved. Clearly, he was hung-over…and it was safe to assume he had spent the night getting drunk and making love with Nick, so he decided to scratch off the general soreness and rectal pain as well. The young man then decided to try opening his eyes again, figuring he would need them to assess the rest of the situation.
Once he accomplished that, Greg realised that he and Nick were not at the latter’s house as he had assumed once he realised they were not in his apartment. They were in an unfamiliar room with wine coloured walls and carpet, ivory satin curtains that matched the sheets on the bed they were currently in, and dark mahogany furniture. Red and white rose petals covered every surface of the room, as well as a generous amount of glitter.
The spiky-haired youth turned a blinding smile on Nick as he wrapped his arms around the older man’s neck. Lost for words, he simply leaned in and kissed the older CSI as well as he knew how before backing up as much as he could without releasing the sable-eyed man, and smiling at him again.
Nick wrapped his arms around the slighter man’s waist and pulled him close, wearing what Greg thought of as his ‘Texas grin’. “I knew you’d like it,” Nick whispered huskily before he leaned in to capture the younger man’s mouth.
As the kiss deepened, Greg felt Nick’s hold on him tighten, until he was being lifted and pressed against the older man’s body. He was not even aware of Nick moving forward until he felt them both falling before Nick’s body was pressing him into a soft mattress. Hands began to roam as their mouths met again and again.
The spiky-haired man decided that they were in a hotel room -one that Nick had chosen, apparently knowing Greg would like it. He did not want to allow himself to ponder the implications of those facts; he knew he would only build his hopes up or crush his dreams before Nick ever had the chance to. Besides, Warrick was always telling him the importance of allowing your theories to shift and flow along with the evidence…
Nick’s arm tightened its hold on the slighter man and Greg could not fight the tugging at the corner of his mouth as he gently slipped his right hand over the arm to return the unconscious embrace. Despite his previous thoughts, the spiky-haired youth could not help but hope that this would not be the only time he felt the Texan’s arms around him. Greg lifted is right hand to wipe his still tired eyes, and paused when he saw his wrist and part of his forearm covered in hand-shaped bruises.
Nick gripped the slighter man’s wrists just as Greg gripped the bedding, both holding on as though their sanity depended on it. The older man’s forehead rested on the younger’s shoulder blade and each breath he released sent shivers down Greg’s scarred back. Nick’s chest and thighs pressed against the willowy body under him repeatedly as they thrust and moaned together.
The CSI-in-training sighed and wiped his eyes before taking another deep breath and relaxing into Nick’s hold again. For a moment, he wondered if it was just Nick or if all Texans were naturally warm before he decided to stop himself. He really did not need to be pondering whether everything was bigger and warmer in Texas while in his current situation.
Greg stroked the arm wrapped around his waist and gently nuzzled the one he was using as a pillow. He knew that it would probably be wise to try to detangle himself from the bulkier man; that waking up naked and wrapped tightly around a nude trainee was likely to freak Nick out even more than if he woke up to a dressed Greg sitting across the room. Of course, that was also assuming that Greg could remove himself from the older man’s hold, which he doubted he could do even if he wanted to.
…And he honestly did not want to. Maybe it was stupid, but Greg was quite comfortable and he figured he might as well enjoy the moment before Nick woke and the probable freak-out ensued. Besides, he reasoned that leaving the bed would not change anything that had passed the previous evening.
As he shrugged to himself, a twinge brought his attention to the sting in his right shoulder. He raised his had once more and touched the tender spot of flesh just before the shoulder met the neck. Greg grinned at the obvious feeling of a love bite, complete with teeth indentations. Considering how passionate Nick could be about everything else, he supposed he should not be surprised at the memory taking shape in his mind.
Greg raised himself onto his elbows and lifted his head to meet the Texan‘s mouth when he leaned down to kiss him. Nick‘s hands caressed and then gripped the slighter man’s thighs as he claimed Greg’s mouth and body. Both men moved and moaned together for what felt like hours before the younger started calling out the elder‘s name and coating both their torsos in his seed. Nick started roaring as he continued to push into the lithe form, before leaning down once more and biting into Greg‘s shoulder, which wasn‘t enough to completely stifle his voice.
As fierce as Nick’s claiming had been, there had also been a tender quality to his touch, which made Greg think it was all right to call it lovemaking. Along with that thought, came a calmness of which the young man was not accustomed. For the first time since he woke up, he allowed himself to consider the possibility that everything might be all right between him and his friend in spite of everything.
After all, he had hidden his feelings for Nick all these years, perhaps he was not the only one hiding something deeper…
Greg stroked the arm wrapped around him once more as he thought, until his fingers brushed over something cold and hard amongst Nick’s warm skin. Warm brown eyes immediately widened when he looked down and saw a familiar ring on Nick’s hand. Greg’s grandfather had given him the silver ring years ago; after the then-child had polished it back to its original glory while practising for his coin collection. To date, the large ring still looked ridiculous on the youth’s slender fingers, but Greg thought it looked perfect on the older man’s shovel-shaped hand.
Greg traced the ring that now rested on Nick‘s finger as he tried to recall how it had gotten there. A glint on his own left hand caught his attention, and warm brown eyes widened further when he realised he was wearing Nick’s fraternity ring. Neither man was wearing their new trinkets on the proper finger, but the CSI trainee knew that was only circumstantial.
Greg could tell that Nick knew Brian from somewhere, but in his current state -drunk on too much alcohol and bliss- he could not be bothered to voice his curiosity. It looked like they might have hit a snag when they reached the part about exchanging rings, but Nick simply blushed and grinned as he slipped his old college ring off and placed it on Greg’s ring finger. All three men smiled and ignored the fact that it was clearly too big.
Without thinking twice, Greg reached into his pocket and pulled out his old lucky charm that his grandfather had given him. The Texan’s grin bloomed into the biggest smile Greg had ever seen…he knew how much the ring meant to the younger man, and what it meant for him to give it to Nick.
The quiet ceremony continued on, and Greg had to giggle a little at Brian’s closing, which he actually believed was perfect for their little illegal wedding. “…And like a blinding supernova, your love is blasting throughout the universe. Two spirits have become one. Earthling to earthling... By the power of the sun and the moon and all the planets in the universe, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss that bride.” Nick wasted no time in sealing the deal, pulling Greg into the most intense kiss he had ever experienced before he could even decide whether he was more giddy or insulted at being referred to as Nick’s ‘bride’.
“There you go. Keep spreading the love.” Brian grinned and shared a wink with Nick before the Texan turned back to his new spouse and pulled him in for another kiss.
It took a moment for Greg to shake the memory and see that his hand was trembling, along with the rest of his body. He quickly curled his hand up and pressed it against his chest as he slapped his other hand over his mouth to block the ‘oh god’ he knew he was about to exclaim. Sleeping together was one thing, but the spiky-haired youth had no idea how Nick would react to a wedding.
A low groan sounded from the body encircling Greg, and the arm he had been pillowing stretched out and then wrapped around him as well. Nick stroked the younger man’s arm and side as he started speaking lowly and a little groggily. “Hey, hey…shh; it’s okay; I got you. No need to be scared.”
Not sure how to respond, Greg just nodded and took a couple deep breaths to calm himself. Nick froze upon feeling the response. “…You’re awake.” The younger nodded again, despite the fact that it was not a question.
“Were you havin’ a nightmare?” Nick asked quietly, still holding the slighter man, if a little looser. Greg shook his head this time.
“You gonna be sick?” After Greg shook his head again, Nick released him and moved away. The spiky-haired youth had to fight the urge to roll over and snuggle up to the other man again. If his head were not already sore, he would have smacked himself for the thought.
Nick sat up with a small groan and Greg did the same, although he avoided looking at the older man, instead staring down at his lap and rubbing his forehead.
The Texan cleared his throat before nervously asking, “Er…Do you remember last night?”
“Not everything,” the spiky-haired man’s voice was even more apprehensive than his friend‘s, “But enough…more than enough.” Greg hoped he murmured the last part quietly enough for his wistful tone to go unnoticed.
Nick cursed under his breath and Greg could tell he was rubbing his hands over his face as he took a deep breath. “I- Greg, will you just-” There was another deep sigh and then Nick’s tone turned gentle. “G, would you look at me…please?”
The younger man complied as quickly as his nerves and hangover would allow. Sable-colored eyes moved over his pale face and dishevelled hair, before trailing down his throat and settling on the bite mark on his shoulder. Nick continued to follow bruises and love bites down the slighter man’s frame until he suddenly frowned.
The Texan reached out slowly and glanced into Greg’s eyes before taking his hands and lifting them to closer inspect his bruised wrists. His voice was barely a whisper when he spoke again. “God, Greg, I…”
“God, Greg…” Nick’s voice was hot against Greg’s ear, even more so than the warm hands that moved to cup his face. “You have no idea how long I‘ve wanted this.”
“I can‘t believe I never… Why didn‘t you ever say anything before?” The spiky-haired youth murmured against the Texan‘s lips between kisses. The CSI-in-training had no idea how they had gotten into the cab or where it was taking them, but as long as Nick kept touching him and talking like that, he did not care.
“I was an idiot…”Nick whispered as he held his forehead against the slighter man’s and stared into his eyes. “I’ll say it now though; I love you.”
Greg smiled and wondered if the older man had been as afraid to say that as he had been. “I love you, Nick.”
Sable eyes lit up and the flesh around them crinkled with the force of Nick’s smile. “You really mean that.” It was not a question, but the younger man smiled and nodded anyway. “Good…’cause I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
If he were sober, the chemist would have been embarrassed at the fact that his eyes were getting misty. “You might want to slow down there, cowboy.” Greg grinned, “Remember, I‘m a romantic; I might start Bogarting your DNA and picking out dish patterns if you‘re not careful.”
“Plan away, doll; I‘m serious…” Nick‘s voice was calm and happy, and his eyes were bright and warm. “I‘d be a fool not to keep you now that I got you. Marry me.”
“When?”
“How ‘bout tonight? I know just the place.”
“Greg, I’m so sorry.” Nick was still holding Greg’s hands and looking into his eyes. Everything about the older man’s posture, expression, and tone spoke of contrition…and Greg felt his stomach drop at the sight.
“Why-” The slighter male‘s voice caught, but he quickly recovered. “Why are you sorry?” Warm brown met sable eyes and silently pleaded for the older man not to say he regretted everything from the previous night.
“For hurting you;” Rough thumbs gently stroked over bruised wrists as Nick unknowingly lifted a weight from his friend’s shoulders. “…And for-” The CSI looked as though he might be ill as he forced himself to continue. “For taking advantage of you… I swear I wasn’t planning to take it so far. I just- I figured…God, Greg; I’m such a bastard. I‘m sorry-”
“Whoa, whoa…what?” Greg turned his hands to hold onto Nick’s as he stared at him in shock. “Nick, what are you talking about? We both had way too much to drink and we-”
Nick‘s voice was tight and angry; he was clearly berating himself. “I wasn’t nearly as drunk as you were and I know you wouldn’t have drunk anywhere near that much if I hadn’t pressured you. You never drink that much and you never hit the hard stuff like that.”
“Hey,” Greg gave the bulkier man’s hands a squeeze. “I knew it wasn’t smart. I know my limits. I just thought…I don‘t know what I thought. I-”
“You thought you could trust me to take care of you,” Nick interrupted strongly. “You knew I was pushing, but you thought it would be alright because you thought you were safe with me.”
“I am safe with you,” Greg interposed earnestly as he stroked the older man‘s arm, “And you did take care of me. It’s alright, Nick; stop beating yourself up about it.”
“I just thought I’d get buzzed and you’d be pretty tipsy and then it wouldn’t be so hard to finally come out and tell you how I feel.” The CSI continued to explain, clearly not ready to believe it was not necessary. “I didn’t mean to get you trashed and I certainly never planned to take it so far while you were-”
“Nick, stop it. You’re ruining our honeymoon.” The younger man smiled gently at the stunned expression that appeared on Nick’s face. “I’m happy, Nick…okay? Well, the hangover sucks, but it’s worth it.” The spiky-haired youth sighed when he could see the older man still struggling to accept what he was saying.
“Yes, we were drunk last night, and yes, I don’t remember all the details in-between the big events…but you know what? That doesn’t matter. Inebriation doesn’t make you someone else, Nick; I didn’t suddenly become your little puppet. Being drunk just makes you forget rationality and propriety so you act on instincts and feelings and hormones and-”
The younger man realized he was starting to ramble, so he decided to cut to his point before his mouth could ruin whatever progress he had made in reassuring his friend. “I‘ve been drunk a few times before and I never confessed to being in love with anyone…and I still wouldn’t have agreed if someone else had asked me to marry them.”
During Greg’s little speech, Nick’s expression changed from surprised to confused to accepting and finally, to sheer joy. The younger man could not help but smile at the return of the larger man’s huge Texas grin. “I’ve been drunk way more than a few times, Greggo, and I never told anyone I loved them, or held them all night long after sleeping with ‘em…and I definitely never proposed to anyone before.”
The CSI released one of Greg’s hands so he could lean back against the headboard. He stroked the back of the younger man’s hand with his thumb while he looked him over once more. “So you’re really alright with all this? I mean, I didn’t give you any time to wrap your head around it.” Nick snorted and rolled his eyes at himself; “Not that time would have helped much…you were pretty trashed by the time I finally made a move.”
Greg was having a hard time keeping one train of thought and he knew that alone should mean something, but he could not stay focused long enough to recall what. Fortunately, focussing on things outside of his own mind, such as the charming Texan sitting beside him, was a considerably easier. If he could think straight, the CSI trainee would have wondered just when Nick had moved so close.
“…So then my brothers and I spent the rest of the night trying to fix it so our dad wouldn‘t find out…and wouldn‘t you know, as soon as we sit down at the table for breakfast -completely exhausted, mind- our mom says she asked Cisco to leave her the Lincoln that day. Then, she tells us to get some sleep while she takes it to her mechanic.” The older man laughed at the memory, “We thought we were being so sneaky too.”
The spiky-haired youth laughed as well; he had somehow managed to follow and retain all the stories his friend had started spilling out over the past few hours. Greg did not know what made Nick suddenly want to share, but he was not about to question it and risk alerting the older man to his sudden openness. “I guess you just aren‘t the type for secrets, man…sorry, I know you like your privacy.”
The CSI laughed and shook his head in recognition of the term. “Actually, I have managed to keep one secret for some time now,” Nick answered in a more restrained tone. He leaned into Greg until they were impossibly close and dropped his voice even lower. “Want to know what it is?”
The younger man nodded and opened his mouth to say yes, but the Texan‘s mouth sealed against his own before he could make a sound. Greg decided thinking was overrated anyway.
“Of course I‘m alright with it; it’s what I’ve wanted too.” Greg looked around the glitter and rose-petal covered room with an unusually shy smile on his face. As usual, once his nerves kicked in, he found his mouth running away with him. “I’ve actually been awake for a while, just trying to enjoy being with you while I could. I figured it would all be over once you woke up. I thought you’d freak, that you’d take it all back, and our friendship, our working relationship, -everything- would just…be ruined.”
The CSI sighed, “See, now that’s why doing it this way was a bad idea. If I’d just decided to man up and tell you straight and sober, you wouldn’t have to question how I feel about everything and we wouldn‘t have to do it all over again.” Nick released Greg’s hand and lifted his arm out, beckoning the younger man closer with his hand; “Come ’ere.”
Greg scooted closer until he found himself tucked under the older man’s heavy arm and held tightly to a muscular torso. He slowly relaxed, reminding himself that he was with Nick, who would never harm him, no matter how angry he might be. The spiky-haired youth leaned against the Texan and slid his own arm behind the well-muscled back.
Nick released a pleased sigh when Greg leaned his head against his shoulder, then he rested his cheek against the younger man’s hair, which was softer than he expected. “I was drunk last night” -He tightened his grip on the slender form in his arms when he felt Greg tense slightly- “But, like you said, I was still me…and anyway, I wasn’t as drunk as you seem to think. I’ve wanted you for a long time but I’m a lot more cautious with men than I am with women. As you clearly remember, I like my privacy.”
“Oh;” The CSI-in-training sounded as though he had just found the crucial piece of evidence in the biggest case of his life. Suddenly, he chuckled, “Nick, have you ever heard me talk about men openly at work? Have I somehow given you the impression that I’m stupid, or reckless, or naïve, or ignorant?”
Nick could not help but grin at his friend‘s familiar tone as he asked his questions; it was the same one he often heard when the youth was teaching him something in a roundabout way back at the lab. He had no idea where Greg was going with this, but he already felt better about the situation. He knew they would be fine. “Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk about men, period; that‘s one reason why I was so nervous. You’re probably the smartest person I know, which is really saying something. I know you aren’t reckless and you definitely aren’t ignorant -I’ve used you as a research tool often enough- you can be a little naïve sometimes though, but it’s endearing.” He patted the slender man’s arm tenderly, sensing the displeased expression he could not see.
Greg released a quick breath and was already halfway to a grin as he got over the naïve comment already. “So why would you think that I wouldn’t be cautious or reserved about us? I know how to keep a secret, I even have a few myself…and I know when to reel it in.” He stroked the thick thigh that pressed against his own; “Besides, I sort of like the idea of being one of your private pleasures.”
The older man smiled and nuzzled the trainee’s hair. “I don’t doubt any of that. It wasn‘t just you either…I mean, I wasn‘t just nervous about you -because of you- you know what I mean. Once I finally got my act together and was ready to face this, you were already talking about field training. Company policy and all; I didn‘t want you to have to choose between that and this” -he gave the younger man a squeeze- “Or make you have to change shifts-”
“You honestly think this isn’t worth a change in shift?” The brown-eyed youth asked incredulously, sounding slightly hurt. “I’d have changed shifts in a heartbeat if that’s what it took to have this. Hell, I would’ve even stayed in the lab. I just never knew-”
“That this was an option, I know.” Nick interjected before he sighed regretfully.
“Maybe we needed the time to sort ourselves out,” Greg replied considerately. “I guess it doesn’t really matter, so long as you’re sure now.”
“I’m sure, Doll.” The sable-eyed man turned and adjusted his hold on the chemist so that he could look into his eyes. Then, he raised a hand to cup his face. “This is what I want…I just wish I’d been smarter about getting it.”
“Well you have me now, so what do you want to do?” Guessing by the Texan’s wandering hand and smoldering eyes that he had missed the point of the question, Greg quickly held up his hand so that Nick could see his own ring on the youth’s slender finger. “I meant; did you want this back or what?”
Nick froze immediately. He thought for a long moment before wrapping his hand around the slighter man‘s. “No, I want you to keep that.” He took a deep breath and spoke evenly. “I know I’m probably being an asshole, but do you think you could just…not wear it so…plainly? It’s just that everyone who knows me will know that ring right away. It won’t matter which finger you have it on; I might as well have put the Stokes family brand on you.”
“Well, if your heart’s set on it, we can talk about branding later,” Greg replied with a soft chuckle that put Nick at ease. “I’ll keep the ring hidden; wear it on a chain under my shirt or something. You can wear yours though…if you want. Sara might have seen it once, but I only told you the story behind it, so it won’t seem weird if she did. You may want to switch hands though.”
Nick nodded as he looked at the younger man in awe. Without many awkward questions or upsets, Greg had managed to assure him that everything was alright -from Nick‘s misguided manner in wooing to their unexpected nuptials to the fact that Nick did not want to advertise the relationship. “We’ll do that when we leave.”
The Texan ran his hands down the slender man’s sides and pulled him closer by his hips. Both grinned as their eyes locked. “I booked the room for the whole day. Let’s enjoy our honeymoon.”
Greg’s answering smile would have lit up the room if his eyes had not beaten it to the punch. “Glad we‘re on the same page now,” He answered as he moved to straddle his husband and leaned in for a kiss.
Nick wrapped his arms tightly around the brown-eyed youth and smiled into the kiss. Within seconds, he could not recall why he had been so reluctant to do this before.
