"Durwood is cheating on you, Samantha," Endora said as if reassuring her. "Face it. Mortals are weak like that."
"Come now, Mother!" Samantha protested. She got up and poured another cup of coffee. "There must be some other explanation.""Look, he told you he's been playing basketball every night, but he hasn't been to the Y once." Endora pressed her index fingers to either side of her nose. "Witch's Honor.""Well, I suppose there is one way to find out," Samantha said before biting her lip. After hesitating she picked up a frying pan and held it up to her face."That's right. See for yourself," Endora purred. But before she could begin scrying Darrin's voice called from the living room, "Honey, I'm home."Samantha let out a sigh of relief and hurried to greet him. Endora followed slowly, arriving in time to see them share a peck on the lips."Ugh! How can you kiss that lying mouth?"Darrin looked at his mother-in-law and smiled. "Hello Endora. I'm actually happy to see you."Samantha gently held his lapels, getting his attention. "Darrin, I know it's really none of her business," she said, "but Mother noticed that you haven't really been playing basketball. So I'm just wondering...""She's right," he proudly declared. "Actually, I've been working on a little surprise."Samantha turned towards Endora and gloated, "I knew it!"He continued, "You see, I've been making you live as a mortal, but it finally dawned on me that it's only fair I learn a something about magic too."Samantha almost stumbled. "Really? That's just...""Unbelievable, I think is the word you want," Endora offered.Darren reached into his briefcase. "See for yourself," he said while offering the redhead a worn piece of parchment. "I think you'll be shocked."Endora took the page. Its ancient runes threw out a blinding light and a clap of thunder filled the room. Fiery sparks engulfed the elder witch's hands, forcing her to drop the parchment. Samantha gasped in horror. The light from the page settled into an eerie glow, casting a menacing shadow across Endora's narrowed eyes. "If this is supposed to be a joke I'm not laughing.""Oh, it's no joke," Darrin chuckled."Why...! I ought to...!"Darrin offered, "What? Turn me into a worm? A goldfish? A toaster oven?"Samantha gripped his arm and muttered, "What are you doing? You know how mother gets.""I know how she used to get.""Enough!" Endora cried out as she flung her arms in the air and snapped her wrists.Nothing happened.Samantha's eyes went wide as it happened again. Try as she might, Endora couldn't cast any spells.Darrin picked up the parchment and smiled at the effulgent glyphs."Darrin! What did you do!" Samantha demanded as she ran over to help her faltering mother onto the couch."Oh, it's just a little binding spell my Spouses of Magical Beings support group came up with." Then he turned to his flustered mother-in-law and asked, "So, how does it feel to be mortal?""How could you!" Samantha snapped while spinning around to face him. She tried to snatch the parchment from him, but fresh sparks burned her hands before she could lay a finger on it."Careful, Sam. It's charged with your mother's powers now, so no witch, or former witch, can affect it in any way."Darrin laid it on the coffee table and sat down next to Endora, putting an arm around her shoulders. "See? Now we have something in common: we're both completely at the mercy of every witch and warlock — and that's on top of things like having to work for a living, growing old..."Endora swooned, but Darrin held her steady.Darrin continued, "Oh, don't worry." He fished into his pocket and pulled out a small purple vial. "I know what will make you feel better." He flicked off the cork with his thumb and then drizzled the purple liquid over the parchment. The page's glowing lines coalesced into a large bright spot before jumping out at Endora, releasing another crash of thunder. The redhead could feel the magical energy returning to her entire being. Endora slowly turned her head and glared at her son-in-law before pulling away from him. She raised her hands high in the air, but Samantha stayed her arms."Wait!" The blonde turned to her husband. "Darrin, taking Mother's powers was pretty low, but why go through all that only to restore them not a minute later? What's the point?""It's not a point. It's an act of good faith."Both witches could only stare in confusion.Darrin took Endora's hands in his. She glanced down with pure disdain until he began explaining, "Listen Endora, for years all we've been doing is trying to hurt each other. But you know who gets hurt the most? Samantha." He gave his wife a brief smile. "Frankly, I don't know why she puts up with it, but I for one am not going to keep making her so miserable. She only wants to be with the people she loves most, but we always punish her for it. And how do you think your grandchildren feel when we're constantly at war with each other?"Darrin let go of her hands and pressed himself back against the armrest. He took a deep breath. "So, if you want to blast me into oblivion, then fine. But there's nothing I care about more in this world than Samantha, Tabitha and Adam. And if this is the only way to get them out of our crossfire, so be it. but, if you think we can move past our personal differences and get along, for their sake, then why don't we at least try?"Endora continued glaring even as he held out his right hand. "He's much braver than I ever imagined, Samantha. I'll give him that." Then she suddenly took his hand and shook it. "It's a deal... Darrin."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
