The TARDIS materializes silently on the lone stretch of beach. Its usual whistle and bang silent. Everything around them is silent as if the world itself is holding its breath. Captain Jack opens the door. Stepping outside he smiles sadly. Leaning on the doorway he seems to gather his strength and stands tall ones more.
Grabbing the ax firmly in his hand he moves to the forest surrounding the beach. Undressing to his t-shirt he works endlessly for hours. Memory’s bombarding his mind.
He and the Doctor often came to this beach. Long before they became them. Their friendship had strengthened. From the uneasy companionship of the doctors 9
th life, to the solid friendship of his 10
th lifetime. Sadly he and the 11
th doctor never did quite get along. But they had been there for each other.
//flashback// Jack and the 11
th doctor seated in a bar sipping drinks. The doctor had showed up in Cardiff that morning. Landing on the plaza and just taking a seat on the bench close by. Just waiting for Jack.
Jack didn’t know what was wrong. He just knew that the doctor seemed to need to be around him that day. They had hardly spoken. The doctor just was there.
“Amy told me to leave and never come back…” The doctor murmurs gently.
Amy had been the last companion that Jack had known. Well except for river. But river was hardly a companion. It seemed the doctor was alone again. The loss of Rory to cancer had pushed Amy to get away from the doctor. To get back to ‘real life’.
Jack understood her. After Ianto he had mourned but he moved on. He wasn’t like anyone ells. He had taught himself to grieve and let go. He still loved. And lost. And the memories were what kept him sane.
Sadly a lesson the doctor didn’t seem to grasp. He never dealt well with loss.
“I’m here...”
//end flashback.//
It had been about 15 years after that that a new doctor had come into Jack life. The second to last life time number 12. Finally ginger, with Caribbean green eyes and a light Scottish brogue that made Jack weak to the knees. He looked like a mix of all the Doctors Jack had known. Slender like 10, he was tall like nine. The quirky humor was so like 11. Devastatingly handsome with a charisma, that that seemed to be like a red line through each doctor.
He had known many doctors. But it would seem, number 12 was his doctor.
//flashback// Jack looked up from his papers as the familiar sound of the TARDIS materialization process filled the Torchwood building. The new HQ in Cardiff was an old warehouse with underground bunkers from ww2. They had excavated and build another 4 levels on the bunker. His office was on the 1
st level down.
Stepping out of his office he absentmindedly made his way to a corner, a level down in the main archive that was actually marked up for the doctor’s use. The sign on the wall was an in-joke with the staff.
*PRIVATE parking for TARDIS USE ONLY!*
The doctor had been delighted and it seemed the TARDIS enjoyed it as well for she never missed the spot. The current staff was familiar with the doctor and liked the man. Saving the world a few times together will do that to people. Now a day’s torchwood was one of the doctor main resources on earth. As well as good friends of course.
Flopping down on the stairs Jack waited for the door to open.
Out stepped an unknown individual. He was dressed in dark grey jeans and combat boots. His slender musculature showing in a well-fitting t-shirt, it was in a deep green color. Over it he wore a grey leather Jacket. Like the bikers used. The body was slender. But he wasn't skinny. There was strength there. He was tall, as tall if not taller than Jack. No weapons or anything.
All those details were noted just in microseconds. Then Jack came to meet the man’s eyes. Instantly he knew. The last time they had been blue. Now they were a deep Caribbean green.
But still he knew those eyes. He loved those eyes and the ancient wisdom that his behind them.
“Doctor?” He asked his eyes sweeping the new face of his best friend. High cheekbones and large eyes, laugh lines around the eyes. Didn’t look so boyish this time. A man in his prime, maybe he was 35 years old or so. His eyes flicker to the hair. “Finally ginger I see!”
“Ai Jack. Finally ginger…” The man’s voice was deep and had a touch of a Scottish accent.
“How long sense?"… “Jack stands.
“Just a few days, I'm finally getting over the effects. So I thought I’d drop in, see you.” The red head stepped closer to the immortal. “Missed ye Jack. I might have been a right bastard. But I missed you.”
Their eyes meet and their lips curl into smiles. Falling into each other’s arms they hug firmly. Standing there just enjoying the connection again. 11 wasn’t a hugger. Well not with Jack at least. They laughed as they separated.
“Want a cup of tea?” Jack asked.
“Coffee if you please. Seems this one can’t stand tea…”
“Finally my kind of man… “Jack laughed as he walked towards the kitchen missing the Doctor’s wistful smile and his murmured.
“Yes finally I am… “
//end flashback// That night Jack had found himself backed into the corner of his office. The doctor pressed full body against him, as they both engaged in a desperate lip lock. The kiss went on and on, claiming both breath and mind from the two beings.
The kiss breaks and silence reins. They look at each other before the Doctor Takes Jack’s hand leads the man home, to the TARDIS, and his own bedroom.
That night the doctor, as he slid into Jack had leaned down and whispered softly in Jack’s ear. His true name. The name that only 3 people in the world had known before Jack. His mother, River and the doctor himself. As they came together Jacks own psychic barriers fell and meeting the doctors own open mind they allowed their minds to meld together.
And Jack understood why.
Nine had been too damaged. Maybe if he had meet Jack before he meet Rose the Doctor might have taken Jack as his own. But it would have been a dark relationship. They would have hurt each other deeply without meaning to. Because it wasn’t just the Doctor who had scars, Jack had his own share as well.
10 could have been a good match. But still the darkness lurked and something held them both back. The shadow of Rose hovered over them both, neither wanting to bring her up and hurt their friendship. It had been hard won.
11 had a hard time with the fixed point in time thing. Putting that aside that that version actually WAS ‘straight’. He had no sexual attraction to men.
12 were more balanced, so was Jack. They had seen much done much. Loved many lost even more. They were both at the point that they were ready. Love eternal. For a lifelong companionship.
So it had begun and all too soon it had ended. Shaking of his thoughts Jack turned back to the task at hand.
Gathering the logs he had cut Jack moved back to the beach. To their spot, the place where they always sat. The place where they had sat now 139 years ago and the doctor told him what to do in the event of his final death.
//flash back//
They were kissing lightly, the Doctor cradled in Jack’s arms. Red head broke away and leaned back laying his head on Jack shoulder. They had eaten well celebrating 15 years together that night. Well 15 years together in a permanent sense. It had taken Jack 3 Years linear time to train his replacements. He still was a code red contact for torchwood and had been recalled to earth many times.
“I am the last you know … the next life is my last.. my last second chance” the Doctor glanced at that beloved face. “ I am sorry I never managed to figure out what the bad wolf did…”
Jack eyes closed in pain at the reminder that someday he would lose his doctor. That he would be forever alone.
“Don’t be sorry. My life is richer for it. I have loved so many beautiful people. I have loved you. Through every second of this crazy life you have been my reason.”
“I know that is why I am so sorry to have to say this to you. But you are my constant companion now and most likely the one to be there when the day does come, that I do die.” The doctor swallows; talking of this is painful, because it forces him to think of his Jack, his beautiful Jack alone. “A Time Lords body is a miracle in itself. The genetic information alone is staggering. Wars have been fought over a single sample. When I am gone. You must burn my body…”
He could feel Jacks protest.
“No Jack promises me that you will come to this beach. Which hold such beautiful memories for us and build a pyre like we did for the master. Place me on it and burn my body. Let no cell be untouched. Promise me that no a snipped of hair may survive.” His voice was filled with passion and his eyes so intense that when Jack meets them he felt like he was drowning.
“I promise… “
/end flashback. /
Pilling the logs as he remembered doing with the Doctor for the master, Filling the spaces between the logs with herbs that the TARDIS supplied. As the sun started to set he was done. Last thing he does before going back into the TARDIS he spread a linen shroud over the pyre.
Going back into the TARDIS, was painful. He walked silent through the mournfully silent halls. She was mourning her fallen master as much as he was. But still her steadfast support was needed.
They had been together for over 156 years. He, The doctor and TARDIS. They had weathered the last generation of the doctor with grace. The fact that it occurred from not far from old age had been quite a relief. That meant that Jack didn’t have to face his lover demise quite so soon.
During the years they had picked up companions. Friends, sometimes lovers, but always their own relationship was sacred.
/Flashback/
Jack sat outside the universes prettiest blue box waiting for the doctor and their latest friend to get back form the market. He was idly flirting with The TARDIS, the telepathic connection between him and the ship had been there from the beginning. But time and familiarity had strengthened it until it was to par with the doctors.
They both enjoyed the connection. The TARDIS liked the flattery and Jack enjoyed being cared for by the ship. Also they both knew it bugged the doctor, so they always tried to find new ways to gang up on him.
They were on earth again about the yr 2400. First earth companion they had for a while. The young woman was a vivacious beauty, sure in her own attractiveness. Blond, pouty and was actually driving Jack a little crazy and not in a good way.
She seemed to think she could seduce the Doctor away from him. She had tried to drive a wedge between them for weeks. Trying to make them both jealous. But Jack was onto her. And the doctor was obvious. As always.
Jack couldn’t blame her. His doctor was a very attractive man.
The 13
th doctor was a smaller man, still redhead, though a deep auburn, with dark hazel eyes. A more angular face, a bit younger then Jack in appearance, a bit less serious and more likely to prank the immortal if he felt especially playful.
Jack smiles as he spots the redhead in question stalking up the hill. The smile turns into a frown as the Time lord passed Jack without greeting. He was quietly muttering in rapid Gallefreyan. Jack was picking it up. But he was hardly fluent. The Doctors fast paced muttering would be hard to decipher even for a native.
“What’s up doc?” Jack said with a jovial grin. His attempt at a joke met with a frown, it seemed to melt away from the doctor’s brow as their eyes meet. “Where is Luc?””
“Luc will not rejoin us.” The Doctor’s voice was strained as he prepared to take his ship into the vortex. His movements sharp and agitated, a sure sign that he was beating himself over the head about the girl’s behavior.
“Why?”
“Because she wanted me to leave you….” It was a simple as that. A loving smile curled Jack’s lips as he leaned in and gave the smaller man a deep kiss. Lips meet in a long slow glide that seemed reaffirm that they were in this together.
//End flashback. //
He walked directly to their bedroom were the time lords body lay in wake. Lifting the slender body now wrapped in black and yellow robes he carried his Doctors still body outside. Laying it down on the linen cloth, folding it around the body he drenched the cloth in oil. The scent of the oil filled the air. It was sacred oil from Gallifrey and had been keeping in stasis on the TARDIS for over 1200 years. Silently waiting for this day.
Jack still sweaty and dirty from his work looked silently up at the starlit sky and the moon full above them. The last rays of the sun kissed the heavenly arches as he set the pyre aflame. Dead eyes watched as the body of his beloved caught blaze. The oil making sure the body burned hot. For 12 hours he stood silently waiting, keeping vigil as the night moved into a new day. As the sun ones again kissed the sky, he turned and headed back into the TARDIS.
Closing the door he laid his coat over the rail. Heavy steps moved to the console. Caressing the coral he closed his eyes.
Turning his mind to the ship he pleaded with her.
Please my darling one please. This gift of life you gave me please take it back I have no life without him. He is my reason, my soul, and my heart as he is yours. You are my reason now Theta told me so… Theta thought I’d survive his death as I have survived many loves before him…my body may live but I am dead. I’m tired and wish for nothing more than to join him. Then open your eyes… Opening his eyes he sees the console open in front of him. An unearthly song filled Jack ears and he felt the burn start somewhere around his heart. He smiled in bliss and fell into the light surrounding him. The TARDIS is suddenly is engulfed in a bright golden light. The whole ship imploding on itself. The vortex reclaiming everything even the ashes of the doctor vanished from the beach.
In heart of the vortex 2 souls curl against each other. Three hearts beating in harmony as they drift on the strands of time.
