Title: A Touch Too Real
Fandom: Dual Survival Rating: M Pairing: Cody/Dave (Yes, guy-on-guy sex. If that offends you, you need not read any further.) Synopsis: Plot? What plot? This is just an excuse to get the characters 'together'. LoL Author's Note: Please give feedback about this, in particularly my writing style and what I could do to improve it. If you have issues with this story based on 'pairing' or 'homosexuality', please keep your thoughts to yourself and feel free to not read any farther. ____ The sheer height of the trees all around more so than the density of the canopy overhead had hastened the fall of darkness on the forest. Indeed, the trees had done their job so well that no moonlight had been shining through even before the wind and rain had picked up. It seemed all the clouds in the world had opened up over their heads and had caught the men unprepared. What shelter they had managed to put together had been incapable of stopping the fierce winds that were blowing like intangible razorblades across the side of the mountain. Though research had been done on the area of their latest shoot, nothing had prepared them for quiet that much ferocity. “Maybe we should turn back?” The cameraman lowered his equipment from his shoulder and raised his hand to hold forward the hood of his rain jacket. As if challenged, the wind howled and whipped all the harder around them to the point of completely draining out anyone's reply. His co-worker was in agreement and drew the boom microphone close to his body while disabling it. “Dave?” Cody asked, straining to be heard. The rain was drumming down hard enough to sound like a thousand jack-hammers and all the men were soaked through. It seemed difficult to believe it had only been raining for a couple minutes at most. “We're a ways away from the truck now, anyway,” Dave reasoned at the top of his lungs. “If we go back now just because of a little rain, I don't figure we ought to be hosting a survival show.” “This isn't their kind of thing.” Cody regarded the two crew-men for a moment. “Maybe we should just escort them back.” The cameraman scowled and leaned in to make sure he was heard. “We don't need an escort. If you want to press on, then we'll do that, but I think we can do without any more footage of the storm tonight.” Dave just nodded and resumed progress through the woods. Buffeted at every step and feeling rather frozen, it wasn't excitement that filled them as they came across the wide, fast-flowing river many long minutes ahead. Dave and Cody shared a look, Dave holding up five fingers and receiving a nod, before turning separate directions along the bank. “Wait here,” Cody instructed. Both crewmen sighed and waited until both men were out of sight before moving toward one of the thicker trees nearby. They huddled, shivering, on the lee-side of the stout tree. It seemed like ages had already passed when they decided to sit, curled up back to back, and let their gear fall to the muck around them. By the time the two survivalists made it back, had discussed their findings, and turned to locate their companions, the crewmen had all but decided not to move. “Get up,” Dave ordered. The crewmen glared back. “There's a cave down river a short ways. It'll be drier inside.” After rather a lot of conjoling, nudging, and cursing, the four men were finally moving. They kept a healthy distance between themselves and the proper bank of the river, not wanting to slip in accidentally. At last Cody could make out the darker shadow of the cave's mouth ahead and pointed it out to the others. In that brief instant, when the microphone's boom bounced off the remains of an old tree stump, the first bolt of lightning lit the sky. His voice was lost in the deafening thunder as the crewman stumbled and fell, sliding half on his back down the steep bank to the water's edge. Panicked, the cameraman dropped his gear and reached for him. He caught hold of one end of the boom and tried to brace himself in the muck, but he couldn't help overbalancing. In the slow motion of a nightmare, Dave could see a wall of water surging down the river in their direction, massive tree trunks churning the water in a frothy mass of certain death. The survivalists needed no second thought to reach out for the crewman. Being closer, Dave stepped onto the slick bank and hauled on the fallen crewman's jacket and Cody reached for the cameraman. The microphone operator caught an embedded root with his foot and kicked hard, scrambling up onto only slightly firmer ground as Dave pulled. As Dave made to shift his body, intending to get away from the river, the wave crashed down on them. The sudden rise in the river lifted Dave's back foot and sent him tumbling into the bank before dragging him deeper into the river. The cameraman hadn't let go of his co-worker and was caught up in the other man's momentum as he, too, was rolled and pulled by the force of the rushing water. For his part, Cody caught a wash of water more reminiscent of a boulder and was knocked sidelong into a tree, which he clung to painfully as the river washed over him. Coughing, spluttering the river out of his lungs, Cody used the tree to get to his feet and staggered towards another tree closer to the river. The downpour hadn't eased at all and he could make out nothing among the rough waters at first. Another flash of lightning, however, illuminated a single figure being swept down an offshoot of the river some ways ahead. With a sickening lump forming in his stomach, Cody watched the figure plummet downwards into a dark hole that was draining away some of the flood water. ______ So, what's the thought? I got quite a bit more to post, but I want to work chapter-by-chapter until I'm happy with what I'm publishing. I've made the mistake before of publishing parts of a story before I was happy with them as a whole. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
