Chapter 1: FBI Headquarters - Washington DC, Tuesday 7:15 AM I feel small and somewhat inadequate as I walk up the front steps of the J. Edgar Hoover building, lost among the starch pressed suits of FBI agents and other officials, who carry themselves with a presence that makes the average person want to sink into a corner. I try to carry myself in way that says I belong here, I do belong here, but mostly so I don’t feel so awkward and out of place. I have been contracted out to hundreds of corporations and state agencies throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia. To do assignment work for the FBI should be no different. From what I could gather from the assignment I received yesterday, I would be assisting the Computer Crimes division with the decryption of several hard drives that were involved in a highly confidential case. This was my specialty in my field, almost a passion and the reason why I do what I do. Though most of my work involves basic programming and hardware configurations for companies, I am CHC Programming Solutions top ‘legal’ hacker across the country. These types of contracts are rare but when they do come up I am the first choice for these types of calls. I straighten my suit jacket and tug down at my skirt as I approach the front desk to sign in and obtain my security access for the coming days or possibly weeks to come. Today I chose to wear my black pencil skirt, which is snug but politely accentuates my hips. I have on a loose fitting white silk top, which is slightly see-through, worn with a white camisole underneath. The jacket is left open but matches the skirt where, when buttoned, accentuates so as to be feminine but still professional. Looking at myself in the mirror this morning I felt smart and confident. But now, suddenly I feel exposed and self-conscious. The man at the desk eyeing me up and down, checks my identification. It appears he gives me a sort of look of approval as he hands me my security clearance and a note with direction to the Computer Crimes lab and additional information for a meeting time and location in a few hours from now. I work my way through the security checkpoint and start to scan the faces standing around me waiting to get checked through. The faces appear as masks, unreadable and official looking. I hand the officer my security clearance at the checkpoint and he waves me through. I begin to work my way to the elevators and decide to wait for one that is not so full. As I am waiting a man approaches standing to my right waiting as well. I look over and notice he has a different air about him than the others have. Standing there his presence is demanding and authoritative. He looks straight ahead and appears almost impatient by the need to have to stand around waiting for an elevator. I don’t notice but a smirk slowly creeps up on my face as I am looking at this man. In an instant he is looking back at me with an almost confused look. Caught staring I give him a huge smile and make my way to the new elevator that has arrived. I press my floor and take the elevator stance looking ahead. The man enters after me and looks at the buttons for several seconds. He turns to look at me briefly with a look almost questioning and then takes his stance as we wait for our floor. All the while I begin to panic. Oh crap, he can sense I don’t belong here. Well of course he knows. He is FBI, why wouldn’t he know. I stand out like a sore thumb. What was with the smile I gave him, oh crap. FBI don’t smile, what was I thinking. Running a mental list of all the files piled on my desk waiting for me this week I am not in the best of moods this morning. Shit, when was the last time I was in a good mood. A scowl crosses my face as I run my hand over my bald head in frustration of the days to come. This current case has the Director keeping a close eye on the X-files and I need to keep an even closer eye on what ends up being discovered on those hard drives. We had to contract an outside source to decrypt the drives and I have yet to receive the information in order to complete a thorough background check on this person. The details involved with this case require a great deal of security and it is my reputation on the line with the bureau to make sure there are no leaks or slips of information let out. I am deep in thought waiting on the elevators when I feel a pair of eyes on me. I look over and notice an attractive young woman with dark eyes looking back at me. Caught off guard, I feel my heart skip a bit as I am at a loss of what to do at that moment. And then she flashes a huge smile at me that seems out of place with our surroundings. I notice that her eyes light up when she smiles and I don’t realize that I’m staring as she walks away to enter the elevator. I notice she has a slim figure with curves in all the right places. The suit she is wearing does not say FBI. It is feminine and fashionable, and … sexy. I catch myself and begin towards the elevator. As I enter I go to press the button for my floor when I notice it is already lit up. I look over at the woman wondering who she is as I have never noticed her on my floor before. As the elevator moves towards our destination I breathe in her scent, is that lavender? It makes me slightly heady and I mentally shake myself out of my daze. Walter old boy, a woman like that would never give you the time of day. She was just being kind with that smile, making an old man’s day. I glance side ways to catch a glimpse at her. She is staring straight ahead and then hurries out of the elevator as soon as the doors open. As I follow I notice she heads towards the Computer Crimes lab. Did she just glance back at me? Dream on old boy. The elevator door opens on my floor and I bolt out. I look around and notice the sign for the Computer Crimes lab instantly. I head towards the door and look back to see if he has noticed my further suspicious behavior. Our eyes meet as he is walking towards me as he exits the elevator. In my effort to hide my flustered and awkward appearance I slide into the computer lab and take a deep sigh as I gather myself. What is wrong with me, I think to myself. This isn’t me. I don’t ever get this way. I feel like a schoolgirl caught red-handed doing something wrong. Get it together, I tell myself as I look around the lab. The air is cool and there are several computer terminals lined up. I see computer hardware lining shelves around the lab. I notice a man with black hair and glasses at one end of the room seemingly overtaken by whatever he is working on. He doesn’t appear to have noticed my presence as he sips at his coffee and pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose. I walk over and clear my throat getting his attention. He looks up at me and looks a bit a taken back by my presence. Holding out my hand I introduce myself, “Hi I’m Maya Hernandez from CHC Programming Solutions”. He looks from my face to my hand and back at me again. Beginning to feel slightly awkward the man finally takes my hand. “Ms. Hernandez, it’s nice to meet you, I’m Mike Stern, I oversee the Computer Crimes lab, please call me Mike. I apologize I wasn’t expecting a woman, I mean not that that is bad it’s just it is a rarity around here to have a woman in the computer lab and now I am blabbering. I’m sorry. It’s nice to meet you. Please, please make yourself at home. You can take over any of the terminals for the case. I will get you the case file for you to review before the briefing meeting this morning. I don’t know how much they told you but once you have been briefed you will be assigned to work with the agents handling the case.” Without taking a breath he continues, “Due to the nature of the case you will have an agent assigned to you the entire time. You will be reporting mainly to the computer lab and your clearance only covers this floor and the main floor of the Hoover building. If for any reason you need to enter any areas outside of your clearance, the agent assigned to you will need to have your access cleared.” Mike stops talking briefly and gives me a small smile. “Maya, do you have any idea what you’re getting yourself into here?” I answer slowly careful with my words, “Well, Mike, no not exactly. I just follow my assignments. If there is something involving this case I need to be concerned about please let me know.” “I don’t mean to scare you” Mike starts then stops again. “What? Tell me. You’re killing me here Mike” I say and give a little nervous laugh. “It’s not the case you need to be concerned about. You can not repeat this or it is my ass, I am telling this to in your best interest” “What?! Now you’re starting to really freak me out.” I say “Alright.” He begins. Looking almost as if he has determined he could trust me in the seconds he has known me. “Like I said, it’s not the case you need to be concerned about. It’s the Assistant Director you will be working with. He is well known for being, to put it politely, a bit rough around the edges and hard to work with. I have literally seen agents leave his office in tears. He is not a man to be reckoned with. But I felt it only fair that you be warned.” As his words begin to set in I try to read Mike’s face to determine how I should react to this information. I decide to take it with a grain of salt. I have worked with some ornery corporate types and have had some success getting past their “rough edges”. “Thanks for the heads up” I say. I look around the room and back at Mike. He is a relatively short man, about 5’4, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. He appears to be around my age, mid 30’s. He has a large nose and reminds me a bit of a cartoon character with his movements and gestures. “Will you be assisting with the case as well? I ask. “Me? No, I will be in and out. Once you are settled in you will be pretty much on your own with whomever you are assigned to. I will give my contact info if there is anything you need but you will find the lab well stocked.” “Thank you Mike” “Let me get you that file.” Mike disappears into a small room behind his computer station and comes out with a file. I take it from him and sit at one of the stations a row up and a few terminals away. As I begin to read the file I can feel my forehead tense as my eyebrows frown. A fire destroyed an underground military base in New Mexico. Very little evidence was found. What little was recovered included 5 hard drives. The computer lab was able to determine that 4 of the drives were still readable but were encrypted with algorithm that they could not decipher. But that wasn’t the part that caused my tension. Other evidence included skeletal remains belonging to an unidentified humanoid species, along with metals that could not be identified as anything in existence today. The FBI believes that the hard drives may hold some of the answers to help identify the remains. I slowly look up from the file, letting it all sink in. Well Maya, you’ve got your work cut out for you. FBI Computer Crimes Lab 9:25 am I gather a few things along with the case file in preparation for the briefing meeting I am to attend. I look at the note I received from security with the meeting information, A.D. Skinners office for briefing, 9th floor 9:30am. I walk out into the hall and look around. I notice public official’s pictures on the walls including Janet Reno and a large oil painting of J. Edgar Hoover. The hall is paneled with wood and tile floors. It has a cold ‘official’ feeling to it. I turn right and head down the hall until I see a sign on the door to my left for the Assistant Director’s office. As I walk in I see a woman seated at a desk to my left and she gives me a sweet smile. “You must be Ms. Hernandez. I’m Kim the Assistant Directors secretary. He is expecting you please go right in.” “Thank you” I say. “Is there anything I can get you?” Kim asks. “Oh no, thank you I’m fine” “Please let me know if there is anything you need during your time here. I know this place can seem a bit overwhelming but I’m here if you need anything” she adds. “Is it that obvious?” I say feeling a little embarrassed. “No, not at all, you will be fine. Hold your own with these people. Just remember they need you more than you need them.” She says with a small knowing smile. “Thanks Kim, you’re right and you actually have made me feel better” I give her a smile and open the door to the Assistant Directors office. As I enter the Assistant Directors office I can see a few people already seated at the conference table. The man I saw this morning at the elevators stands and walks towards me. My breath catches for a moment and the phrase “you belong here” flashes through my mind. “Ms. Hernandez, I’m Walter Skinner. I see you have managed to find your way around successfully?” He extends his hand. “Nice to meet you sir.” I say, “Yes, I have managed just fine, thank you.” I shake his hand and look up into his face. The Assistant Director is a tall man of about 6’2 with broad shoulders and muscular upper body from what I can tell with the well-tailored suit he is wearing. He is bald on top with a shag of dark brown hair around the base of his head. He wears wire-framed glasses that reflect the light to hide his brown eyes underneath. I seat myself next to A.D. Skinner as introductions are conducted with the rest of the members at the table. The meeting soon begins as the remaining two agents enter the room and sit across from me at the conference table. They are introduced as Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The man, Mulder, strikes me as attractive but a bit goofy in his demeanor. As he speaks I sense that he isn’t what I would expect an FBI agent to be like. The woman, who goes by Scully, I soon find out, is a doctor as well. She holds herself with an air that demands respect and gives off a no nonsense appearance. I suspect it is something of necessity in the field she is in playing alongside the big boys. Mulder goes over the details of the case and the hard drives that were found. Skinner soon stands and walks to his desk where he retrieves a box containing the hard drives that were discovered. He sets the box next to me and sits again. “Ms. Hernandez, it is my understanding that you are one of the best at what you do. You come highly recommended and I trust that you will handle this case with utmost discretion.” His voice demanding attention, he goes on. “That said, you will be working alongside agents Mulder and Scully during you’re time here but I will be overseeing this case. You will be reporting to me. Any new developments on this case must be reported to me immediately. If at any time I feel that you are not making any progress with the decryption of these drives, I may chose to release you from the contract. Am I clear?” “Yes sir. Understood.” I say feeling slightly uncomfortable. “Meeting dismissed. Ms. Hernandez, I will be working with you directly today. Please stay behind for a moment. Agents Mulder and Scully, please come by the Computer Crimes Lab later today to set up a rotation schedule with Ms. Hernandez to oversee her time here. Thank you, that is all.” Everyone rises and begins to leave the room. I am not sure what I need to do at that moment. I busy myself sorting though my notes and the case report as Skinner follows every one out and closes the door behind him. I sense his eyes on me but don’t look up afraid I will give away my discomfort. I close the door as the last of the agents leave the office. I look over at Ms. Hernandez. I am still a little off put by the thoughts that went through my head when I first saw her on the elevator this morning and that I never expected an attractive woman, let alone this woman, walking through these doors for the case briefing. I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t her. I walk over to my desk to grab a few things in preparation for our morning together and put a mental block on where ever my mind had planned to wander in this situation. I walk back over to the conference table where Ms Hernandez is sitting and speak. “Are you ready Ms. Hernandez? It is going to be a long day for you so I suggest we get started.” I raise my hand gesturing towards the door. She gives a small smile and stands. I grab the box with the hard drives and follow her out of my office. We leave the Assistant Directors office and head back toward the computer lab. Kim gives me a small apologetic smile as we leave her outer office. He follows as I lead the way back hiding my awkwardness. As I enter the lab I notice Mike is no longer at his terminal. I become fully aware of the man standing behind me and take a deep breath as I enter into the room. We settle in and I begin to look over the hard drive remains in the box to see where it best to begin. Now fully focused on the job at hand I plug in the first drive and begin to investigate the drives content. When I work I become plugged in. I lose all sense of time and my surroundings. The building could be burning down around me and I probably wouldn’t notice. Today, on the other hand, I am fully aware of the large man sitting next to me. He smells of Old Spice and something else I can’t quite put my finger on. Sitting there with him I guess that he is in his mid 40s. Putting aside his overpowering, almost aggressive demeanor I find myself attracted to him. “Maya”, I think to myself. “What are you doing? This is neither the time nor the place to be having these thoughts about this man. This case is extremely serious and you need to get focused.” I take a deep breath and continue looking through the encrypted files on the drive. As I enter the computer lab behind her, I see her stop and look around. I watch her quietly from behind and notice that her long hair is pulled loosely into a clip. My eyes scan downward and I begin to admire the way her skirt is tight in all the right places showing off her form. Her legs are long and the stilettos she is wearing show off her calves nicely. I have always had a weakness for stilettos and stockings. Call me old fashioned but there is something about them that make a woman’s legs all the more inviting. She heads over to a terminal and I follow setting down the box of hard drives and watch as she begins to sort through the box. I try not to be so obvious as I watch her begin to work. Her fingers begin to fly across the keyboard and I watch her work wondering what a woman like this is doing in such a boring field as this. I pictured a pimply man coming here with a cracking voice and glasses. Not anything like the woman before me. Now, I am not in the least bit sexist. Some of the best and brightest agents in the field are women, but I am still a little taken back. “Ms. Hernandez, if you don’t mind my asking, how long have been doing this type of work?” I ask. She looks over at me gives me a small smile. God her smile. “I started with CHC right out of college. In fact I was recruited my last year of college after doing a summer internship with them. So what does that make it?” She tilts her head to do the mental math. “Gosh, it has been almost 15 years. How time flies.” She shakes her head mystified and turns back to the computer screen. I quickly do the math on my own and guess that she is about 35 years old. “Walter you should be ashamed of yourself.” I think to myself. “She is nearly 10 years younger than you are.” I remove my glasses and rub my eyes. Man I could use a drink about now. I glance at my watch, almost 10:30. I need to either get out more often or better yet get a life rather than lusting over the contracted hires. When was the last time I had a date, I wonder. Sharon and I divorced a few years back when I was 42. Maybe a couple dates in between then and now but nothing that lasted or went any further than the first date. I am too consumed in my work and really I guess I have to admit I am not the best company. I keep myself in good shape and I have no problem getting dates and company from time to time but I have to admit my job doesn’t exactly put me in the best of moods. I look over at Maya and imagine she is either married to a good-looking man or dates whomever she pleases. I look at her ring finger and notice she isn’t wearing a ring. Doesn’t mean much at this day and age, I never wore my wedding ring. I pull out the files I brought with me and begin to go over some paperwork that has been requiring my attention. I try to stay focused but it is hard with her sitting next to me. I can see her cross her legs as she works and notice her skirt rise slightly. If I don’t keep my eyes to myself something else will be rising and this is not the most appropriate of places for that to happen. I turn slightly away and continue to read through my paper work. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
