“Oi look! It’s the freak!” Sally Donovan announced to her friends as Sherlock and John walked by. Immediately her group began to walk towards them. “Hey, freak! I don’t know what you threatened John with to make him be your friend, but let him go! He’s a good guy and doesn’t need a freak like you hurting him.” She said, hands on her hips and looking back at her friends for approval. Sherlock felt John stiffen beside him. “Shut-up Sally! I’m his friend because I want to be his friend! Unlike you, he doesn’t have to force me to hang out with him. He’s a genius and you’re just jealous because you can’t even pass English!” John yelled at her, then grabbed the sleeve of Sherlock’s coat and stormed off. Sherlock felt his whole body go warm as they stormed off. He was so lucky to have John as a friend. When they had first met, Sherlock had almost immediately started spouting off his deductions of John and how he obviously didn’t like his family as much as he pretended to. Then he had waited for the explosion of anger, but it never came. Instead John stood there staring at him for a minute then began exclaiming how fantastic Sherlock was. When he thought about, Sherlock realized that he had fallen in love with John at that moment. In the years since then John had protected him from every bully and always told him how brilliant he was. Ever since secondary school, however, things had been getting difficult. His body began to react oddly whenever John would stand up for him, he would feel warm all over and a certain part of him would fill with blood, very quickly. Finally John slowed to a stop right outside the library where they ate lunch. Usually right about now John would be either distracting Sherlock by talking about how oddly someone was acting and seeing if he could figure out what that person was hiding, or he would just tell Sherlock that he was amazing and everyone else was just jealous and they would get over it. Today, however, he just sat down and put his head in his hands. ‘Oh. His dad is back.’ Sherlock realized and sat down next to him, any reaction to John’s protection disappeared at that realization. “John…” Sherlock began, unsure of what to say, “Thanks again.” John looked up. “I wish I could do more. They’re so cruel to you for no reason, other than that you’re different. And all I can do is yell at them and drag you off to safety.” He buried his face in his hands once more, “I’m a terrible friend.” Sherlock hated moments like this. He knew he should do or say something, but he had absolutely no idea what. He wasn’t good at this reassuring stuff. “You’re the best friend ever.” He finally decided on. John let out an odd noise that sounded like a half-laugh mixed with a sob. “John,” he paused, “I mean it. I’d be lost without you.” He felt himself blushing slightly at this statement and tried to hide it. John looked up with blood-shot eyes and a single tear running down the left side of his face. Sherlock automatically brushed it away with his gloved hand. “Oi! Don’t touch him freak! Get away from him!” Sally yelled as she stomped towards them, “I told you to leave him alone. I don’t want him catching your disease!” John stood up, walked over to Sally and punched her in the face. “You bitch!” He yelled, pulling back to hit her again, “The only freak here is you!” As he moved his arm forward again Sherlock’s grabbed him and held it still. John looked at his face saw that Sherlock’s eyes were wide with shock. John stopped and realized what he’d done. “Oh God…” He looked back at Sally and saw blood gushing from her nose and she was crying. “John. John come on.” Sherlock said, trying to pull the shorter boy away, but John was frozen, shocked at having just hit a girl no matter how mean she was. Sherlock saw her gang coming after them, seeing the blood and realizing what happened. “John we have to go!” he said louder, fear creeping into his voice. What would they do to John for this? John heard the fear and looked back at Sherlock, snapping out of his trance. Then they both ran. John turned back and couldn’t see the group of angry people and was going to mention this to Sherlock when he got pushed through a door and into a bathroom. Sherlock locked the door and motioned for John to be silent. They sat there panting as quietly as possible when they heard footsteps. “Where’d they go?” “How did they run so fast?” “That little prick! I’ll teach him for hitting my girl.” The steps slowed just outside of the bathroom door. Suddenly a bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. “Shit we gotta get to class.” “We’ll get ‘em later man.” And the group went away. John suddenly couldn’t stand anymore and slumped onto the ground. “Oh God. I just hit a girl. I just hit a girl!” he panicked. Sherlock gracefully sat down next to him and put his hand reassuringly on his back. “Thank you,” he said, wishing he had better people skills. John suddenly turned to lean into Sherlock’s chest and started crying. ‘He thinks he’s becoming his father. Wow he’s so warm. Stop it Sherlock! You need to help him here, he’s having an identity crisis and you’re mooning about how warm he is!’ “It’s okay, John. She deserved it. It wasn’t unprovoked. You’re not your father. You’re,” he stopped, trying to think of the right word, “amazing.” John’s crying slowed and he looked up at Sherlock, and when he realized how close he was he backed up a little bit. “That’s my line,” John joked through tears, “Oh no. How am I going to go to class like this? Sally probably went to the principal.” “I can try to get Mycroft to sort it out. The principal is in love with him. And we should ditch. We could head to my place, my parents are in Germany for the week and Mycroft’s home, but he wouldn’t tell on us. Not if we told him what happened.” Sherlock reasoned, “And you can stay the night if you want. So you don’t have to go home in case they get a phone call. You can borrow all of my stuff if you need anything.” John nodded his assent and stood up, wiping his face. Sherlock went and unlocked the door and both boys walked towards the parking lot, Sherlock texting away. When they got there Mycroft’s black Mercedes was waiting for them.
