A.N.-The title comes from the song 'Mad World' by Michael Andrews. Kurt did not leave for Dalton.
Sue Sylvester watched from her elevated position in the April Rhodes Civic Auditorium as the McKinley High School New Directions rehearsed for their second Sectionals performance; she found herself significantly less than impressed. These teens who used her machinations to push themselves further (the reason she pushed them so hard) were...they were phoning it in. She couldn't really say that she was surprised; she'd foreseen this over a year earlier, which was why she'd pulled Kurt Hummel and Mercedes Jones to the Cheerios, and why she'd created a second Glee Club the year before. Sue swept out of the room; this could no longer stand. She was tired of her school losing everything and would no longer stand for it.
William Scheuster had no idea what was going on; he had been on his way to supervise the Glee rehearsal when Sue Sylvester swooped over him like the most horrifying combination of Voldemort and Severus Snape in existence and dragged him to a part of the Auditorium he'd ever been to before. When they were apparently in position he watched as Rachel and Finn sang their duet; he'd never noticed how...uncomfortable it was to watch them before. Finn wore a vacant expression, mostly aimed at his girlfriend, and Rachel...well, frankly she screeched; that voice that was so rich and inviting from the front of the house sounded horrible from back here. Also noticed was the way that her eyes bugged out and her face twisted into something that made her look completely insane and not at all appealing to watch. Certainly something he needed to keep in mind, Will thought. The group number was next and that was when Sue spoke for the first time. "Pay attention to your session singers, Buttchin. You might learn something."
Santana Lopez looked up from where she was busy studying with Tina and Artie for a killer Psych test while they sang the backing track to Berry and Frankenteen's latest gag-worthy love fest. The two Captains stood from and center, gazing at one another brainlessly, while everyone else (in other words, the people Santana actually liked) was laid out around the stage; even Artie had been pulled out of his chair to join his friends on the floor. Sam, Brittany, Mercedes, and Puck were nearby working on English while Kurt, Quinn, Mike, and Lauren were further away working on European History. Also, Puck and Hummel were totally eye-fucking. Like seriously hard core fuckage; this shit was getting pretty hot. Tina reached over to write on the edge of Santana's paper. Think they'd let us watch? Santana gave the girl a filthy smile, glad beyond words that the crazy Goth Vampire chic had become her friend. Soon everyone's attention was on the eye porn in front of them; they never missed a beat in their song, not even noticing when their 'stars' stormed off stage after noticing that no one was 'putting forth the appropriate effort' (Rachel's words, of course).
Will watched as his Glee Club began the group number, keeping Sue's words in mind. At first he didn't see the problem; their timing, dictation, and pitch were perfect. Sure it would be nice if they put forth a little more energy but their efforts were certainly noticed and appreciated. He got Sue's point when Rachel realized the others were doing other things while they sang instead of putting their entire focus into it as she was; she stormed off stage, dragging Finn with her, and the others never missed a beat. Their timing, dictation, and pitch remained perfect; all that was missing were the central voices. As Will watched the group ran through Rachel's solo 'ooh'-ing the appropriate background noises and such; Will became very uncomfortable as he watched the teens run through the set three more times before noticing that two of them were missing. The teens started talking as they waited for Rachel to return ("Of course she'll be back, dude, who else can she treat like her fucking slaves without getting punched in the throat?"), letting Will in on the inner workings of New Direction. Clearly his kids believed their sexuality to be "as a group", if the banter between Santana, Tina, Mercedes, and Quinn (which the fuck?!) was any indication. Kurt and Puck had some seriously unresolved sexual tension that the group wanted to watch them resolve...repeatedly. Kurt Hummel and Artie Abrams were solely responsible for the drastic rise in the Club's grades since it's inception. Kurt Hummel ruled New Directions with an iron fist and tolerated Rachel's behavior only because they needed the numbers. Kurt Hummel only allowed the club to continue because he hoped Will would help someone someday...because he didn't believe Will would be willing to help anyone so long as Rachel Berry and Finn Hudson were in attendance at William McKinley. If they could find another faculty sponsor (which they voted to look for) then things would change. The members of New Directions currently in the Auditorium despised Will for his favoritism, song choices, and unwillingness to listen. These kids didn't believe Glee deserved any more effort than they were already putting into it because they weren't getting anything out of it. Then they sang and holy crap where did that come from? Tight harmony, fluid melody, alternating soloists...they jumped up to dance and it was even better. This was everything a show choir should be, even if they needed one more body to qualify. The most noticeable change came after Rachel and Finn stormed back into the room; and Puck had been right saying Rachel treated the rest of them like slaves, Will noticed as their faces blanked and they dropped back into their study groups. She behaved as though the rest of the club existed solely on her whims and threatened them with both the ACLU and the disbanding of the club due to lack of numbers (the others, Will noticed, took absolutely no notice of the girl as she ranted). Eventually Sue let him leave and Will made his way to the front of the Auditorium despite the fact that he'd never wanted to be anywhere less in his life. As he ran the group through their set list for Sectionals it was as good as it had been when the majority of the club was still studying; compared to what they'd done while Rachel and Finn were out of the room it was lackluster and dull. In fact it was downright boring. It was too late to change things now but Will was determined to change things. Clearly what Sue had been doing was showing Will how to be a winner. William Schuester was going to listen.
