A surge of life flowed through both their bodies as Caroline drank the blood of the eldest and most fearsome Original. Two times. Two times he had dragged this girl to the brink of death. They were closest like this. She was completely vulnerable to him, and he her.
“You should have let me die.” Klaus shifted his gaze to meet hers, perplexed. “How am I to be saved without you?” “I didn’t mean a word of that,” admitted Caroline, staring him dead in the eye. “You should know a thing or two about manipulation.” He wouldn’t be fazed. Of course she meant it. There was no other way. “Go,” he said coolly, freeing her from his clutches. “Go to him. Show him he won.” “Is this all a game to you?” asked the blonde. “A way to prove your superiority?” Yes. “You may be the most powerful vampire in the world, but you’re as lonely and pathetic as any of the drunkards drowning their regrets away at The Grill right now.” Caroline stayed perfectly still, strong and bright as ever. “I used to feel sorry for you.” “It isn’t your pity I desire.” She scoffed. “Don’t patronize me.” “Why are you so afraid?” asked the Hybrid. “I’m not afraid.” “I think you are.” “I don’t trust you.” Klaus tilted his head in thought. “I’m not asking you to trust me.” “Trust is important. Trust is the difference between you and Damon.” Caroline paused. “Between you and Rebekah.” Klaus raised both eyebrows, amused. “You hate my sister.” “But I know she’s capable of trust.” “How so?” Caroline smiled. “Remind me…how many times have you betrayed her this past century?” “Ask Stefan.” “Stefan is a pawn to you. He wouldn’t pay you half a cent’s worth of attention if Elena wasn’t in the picture.” “To my understanding Elena is no longer any of his concern.” “He loves her,” she said confidently, believing every word of it through and through. Klaus carefully studied her, acutely aware of the fact that they were still very close in proximity. “Love means a lot to you, doesn’t it?” “I know it may be a foreign concept to you but some people hold it in high regard. Tyler, for example.” “Speaking of pawns. Where is your precious Tyler? Has he left you here to die?” Caroline flashed him a knowing look. “Of course not. He knew you would save me.” “How did he know that?” “Because for some inane reason you –” Her voice broke. “You’re obsessed with me.” Klaus smiled. “I’ve killed hundreds of thousands of people over the years, and in every death there lies a significant amount of truth. There is no room for manipulation.” He reached for her hand and traced his fingers over hers and around her wrist, knowing she wouldn’t recoil. “Of their feelings or mine.” “I know what you’re trying to do and –” “ – And you are no exception.” Klaus narrowed in on her, while still maintaining distance. “So, I’ll ask you one more time. Why are you so afraid?” Caroline remained silent as ever. She was at a loss for words, and although it gave Klaus a certain amount of satisfaction to know he had won this around, he couldn’t relish in victory – not like this. Finally, the young woman spoke. “Your evil has nothing to do with vampirism. It was there when you were human, too,” she said, finding the words as she went. “You’re ruthless. You backstab your own siblings. You know no loyalty. Millions of people have died because of you. Bloodshed follows you wherever you go. People I care about are gone…and it’s all your fault.” All true. “But…?” Her lips trembled the slightest bit. “But some weird part of me I don’t understand feels…connected to you. I thought it could be a sire-bond at work but it existed even before I drank your blood.” “I don’t believe there is a name for it,” he said carefully. “It’s just a feeling.” Klaus took note of the way her lips began to tremble faster and faster. “There is nothing to fear, love.” He brushed the bud of his thumb over her mouth and down her chin. “You’re safe with me.” Caroline took a few shortened breaths before an inexplicable stillness took over. For a moment it looked as though she made motion to lean closer and fill in the fleeting distance between them, but as Klaus read the guilt laced within her eyes, he noticed she wasn’t staring at him at all. “Tyler,” said the girl, barely a whisper. “I – I…” Klaus turned around and saw Tyler Lockwood staring between them with mingled shock and disgust. The young man opened his mouth to say something, but Klaus beat him to it. “You were right, mate,” he quickly said, in no mood for teenaged drama. “I saved her. Now, please, grant me the favour of some peace and quiet. I have a lot of scheming to do.” Caroline blinked several times before rushing over to her boyfriend, practically throwing herself at him and showering him in kisses. “Let’s get out of here,” she said. “Please.” “Y – Yes,” agreed Tyler, baffled. “Let’s go.” He ushered his girlfriend to the front door, which stood ajar, failing to take notice of the silver bracelet around her wrist. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
