Chapter 1
Up in the mountains sat a small cabin surrounded by a lake. The only way to reach said cabin is by helicopter. A man by the name of Stringfellow Hawke lives up there with his niece, Ariana. She has been with String ever since her mother had died when she was four. She was placed with a foster family for about two years before a surviving family member could be found. She had found out that String was her uncle the moment that she went to live with him when she was six. She never really knew her father. But her uncle had told her that her father was his brother. He even had pictures of him and String around the cabin. String would always catch her looking at them. String had learned that Ariana wouldn’t speak if there was anyone but the two of them together. She had met a friend of her uncle’s by the name of Dominic Santini shortly after she came to live with him. She soon included Dom in their little circle of people who she would talk around. If there was anyone other than the three of them around, she would use sign language to talk to her uncle and Dom. By the time she was ten years old, Dom and String had taught her to fly. She learned real quickly. She actually liked flying with them. She also had a teacher that would come to the hanger to teach what kids her age were learning in school. When she didn’t want to be at the hanger with String and Dom, she would stay at the cabin with her uncle’s dog, Ted. She loved the air up at the cabin. On this particular day, Ariana was outside sitting on the dock with her feet in the water leaning up against her uncle’s stool while he played his cello. She had her eyes closed as she listened to him playing. The sound of his cello always relaxed her. She would be lost if she couldn’t hear the sound of his cello if anything happened to him. She sat up suddenly as she opened her eyes and looked off into the distance. She then looked back at her uncle as he stopped playing. He raised an eyebrow at her. She smiled as she looked back up to the sky once again. “Uncle Dom is coming,” she said as she looked back at her uncle. String couldn’t understand how she could hear something that no one else could. He guessed it was something that she had picked up on when she came to live with him. He, too, could hear things before they could be seen. He smiled down at her and nodded his head to let her know that he had heard Dom’s chopper as well. “Yeah I hear him too,” he said back to her just as a chopper came into their view. Both of them got up so that Dom could land on the dock. String picked his stool up in his hand along with his cello and then headed back up to the cabin. Ariana followed but soon stopped and looked back as she watched Dom land. Once Dom landed the chopper, Ariana ran up to him and greeted him. She opened the chopper door so that he could get out. She hugged him once he was out of the chopper. He returned her hug and then pulled her back from him. He held her out at arms-length. “Where’s your uncle?” he asked her. Ariana turned around and pointed back up at the cabin. “He went inside after we heard you coming, Uncle Dom.” Dominic nodded his head as he started walking up to the cabin and Ariana had run around behind the cabin to do something. She knew that whatever Dom was here for she didn’t need to be in the middle of their conversation. She usually knew what they were talking about but she was a teenager and didn’t want to be involved in it. **inside the cabin** Dom walked in the door and saw String standing behind the bar. He closed the door and walked over to the bar and leaned on it. He stared at String before he said anything. “Has Michael talked to you lately?’’ he asked. “No. Why do you ask, Dom?” String asked back. Dom shook his head. “No reason. Just that he hasn’t bugged us in a while, String.” String nodded his head as he walked past Dom and went to the door and grabbed his fishing pole. He walked out just as Ariana came running inside. “Uncle String, another chopper is approaching,” she said. “But they won’t be able to land because of Uncle Dom.” String stopped at the steps and looked up in the sky to see a white chopper approaching. He then turned to see Dom standing at the door looking up as well. He knew what he had to do. He walked up beside String and nodded. “I’ll see you later, String. I have to go back to the hanger anyways to make sure that everything is ready for in the morning,” Dom said as he walked past String and headed to the chopper. Ariana came out and stood beside her uncle as she watched Dom fly off and the white chopper land in the same place as Dom had been. She then looked back at her uncle. “What does Archangel want now?” she asked as she turned and walked back inside the cabin. String shook his head as he followed Ariana back inside. He knew that she didn’t trust Michael as far she could throw him. He put his fishing pole back beside the door. He then walked over to where Ariana was sitting beside the fireplace. He looked down at her and smiled. “Just do what you do best when Michael is here. Listen carefully to everything he says and see if he is leaving anything out,” he said to her as he ruffled her hair. Ariana pulled her head away from her uncle’s hand and smiled up at him. She knew how to talk to her uncle when she needed to tell him something when there were other people around them. She had learned sign language when she was younger because she had gotten really sick and the foster family that she was living with before she moved in with her uncle thought that she was deaf. Just as she was about to say something to her uncle, Michael walked through the door with Marella. She scowled at both of the newcomers and then got up and went up the stairs to her uncle’s room. She sat on the floor with her legs hanging through the railing. String stood just across from Ariana on the ground floor. “What brings you here, Michael?” String asked as he looked at the two by the door. Michael walked further into the cabin with Marella close on his heels as she looked up at Ariana and smiled at the girl. Ariana looked down at Marella and smirked evilly at the woman. String looked up at Ariana and gave her a look to tell her to behave. Michael watched as Ariana nodded to String. He smiled slightly as he turned back to String totally ignoring the girl looking down at them. “I came because I have a mission for you and Airwolf, String,” Michael said as he sat down in the chair nearest to him. String sat across from Michael as Marella sat down on the mantle. “What kind of mission, Michael?” String asked slightly interested. Michael sat forward in the chair and placed his elbows on his knees as he looked straight at Hawke. “We need you to take Airwolf and fly to the Soviet Union and retrieve an informant before the KGB gets ahold of him,” Michael started to tell String. Ariana had slowly started to tune everyone out as she went off into her own little world. She did that from time to time. Even though she was off in her own world, she was still listening to what was being said down below her. When she heard Michael stumble over his words, she picked up a folded piece of paper beside her and through down so that it hit her uncle on the shoulder. String looked up at her and she signed to him that Michael was hiding something that could possibly put him, Dom, and the Lady at risk. String nodded his head to her and then turned back to Michael. “What aren’t you telling me, Michael?” he asked the man dressed in white. Michael looked at String and just stared at the man. He didn’t show any sign that he was hiding something. He then looked up and saw Ariana sitting there looking down at them. He shook his head and looked back at String. Michael sighed as he began to tell String what he wanted to know. They talked into the better part of the night. It was well after midnight when Michael and Marella decided to leave. String walked them out and then came back in and looked up at where Ariana was sitting. He smiled when he saw that she had fallen asleep against the rail. He walked up the stairs and picked her up. He then carried over to the bed and placed her on the floor by the fireplace. Once he had her on the floor he covered her up with the blanket on the floor. He leaned down and gave her a kiss on the forehead. He then walked around the bed and laid down on it thinking about the mission that Michael wanted him and Dom to undertake. **the next morning** Ariana woke up and sat up. She yawned and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She looked over and didn’t see her uncle in bed. She got to her feet and walked around the bed and looked over railing to floor down below. She started to panic when she didn’t see her uncle in the cabin. She walked down the stairs and over to the door. She was just about to open it when her uncle walked through the door. She smiled up at her uncle. “So when do you leave?” she asked him. String just looked at his niece. He could tell that she was worried about something. She could never hide anything from him and she knew it. “Tonight,” he said to her. Ariana walked away from him and went and sat down in one of the chairs. She looked at the floor and then back up at her uncle. She drew a breath in and then let it out very slowly. She just had a funny feeling that something bad was going to happen to either of them. She couldn’t take it if she lost another family member. She wanted to keep her uncle around a little while longer. At least until her father could come back home. “Please don’t go, Uncle String,” she pleaded with him. “I have this bad feeling that something bad is going to happen to you and Uncle Dom or even the Lady.” String knelt down in front of her and pulled her hands into his own. He then made her look up at him. What he saw started to make his heart break. He gently reached up and started to wipe the tears away. He hated it when she would cry. He pulled her to him and hugged her close. “We’ll be okay,” he said to her as he tried to reassure her. Ariana continued to cry on String’s shoulder. She then wrapped her arms around his neck and held on tight. She released her uncle once she had stopped crying. She smiled at him as she heard someone approaching their hideaway. “Uncle Dom is here,” she said above a whisper. “I’ll stay here with Ted.” String nodded his head as he got to his feet. He grabbed his jacket and walked to the door. He looked back at Ariana and saw that she was fixing herself something to eat. He then turned back to the door and walked out of the cabin. He saw Dom landing on the dock. He walked down to the dock and climbed into the chopper once it had landed. Once he was in the chopper, String looked over at Dom. “Michael came to see me last night,” he said as Dom took off. “Oh and what did he want?” Dom asked as he flew back to the hanger. String looked over at Dom as he said, “He wants us to fly into the Soviet Union to retrieve an agent of theirs.” Dom kept his eyes on the scenery in front of them. “And when does he want us to leave?” “Tonight,” was all String said as they landed. Dom looked over at String as he started to shut down the chopper. They had no time to prepare for their little trip. “What about Ariana?” he asked worriedly. “She’s staying at the cabin with Ted,” String said as he got out of the chopper and started walking towards the hanger. He hated it when Ariana would get those feelings that something bad was going to happen. He had learned a long while back not to ignore those feelings. “She’s worried that something is going to happen to us or Airwolf. You know as well as I do, she is usually never wrong when she gets like that.” Dom nodded his head. He knew what String was talking about. It was like Ariana had a sixth sense about things. They both got out of the chopper and walked into the hanger only to be met by Caitlin. She walked up to the two of them. “Hey guys. Where’s Ariana?” she asked worriedly. String looked at Caitlin when she asked where Ariana was. He also didn’t like the worried tone in her voice. He knew he should have convinced his niece to come with him. He quickly walked into the hanger and over to where the radio was at. He turned it on and called for Ariana over it. “Ariana,” he called over the radio hoping to get a response from her. “Ariana Marie Saint John Hawke, answer me this instant.” He was starting to get worried when she wouldn’t answer. Caitlin looked at Dom when String walked past her into the hanger. She hoped that nothing was wrong. “String left Ariana up at the cabin with Ted,” Dom said in answer to her question. “He is now thinking that he should have convinced her to come with us.” Caitlin and Dom walked into the hanger and over to where String was at. He was still trying to get Ariana to answer him on the radio. Just then they heard Ariana’s voice come through. “Sorry, Uncle String, I was outside playing with Ted,” they all heard her say. String sat down in the chair when he heard his niece’s voice. He let out the breath that he was inadvertently holding. “Do me a favor and stay inside the cabin until I get back, okay?” he asked her over the radio. “Sure, Uncle String, I promise,” they all heard her say. String turned and looked at Dom and Caitlin with a smile on his face. He was just happy that Ariana was okay. He knew that she could take care of herself. He had taught her how to fight when she came to live with him. It was the only way that he could get her to come out of her shell and not be shy around him. It took Dom teaching her how to fly for her to be comfortable around him. “Let’s get this mission done and over with before Ariana’s bad feeling comes true,” String said as he walked back out the hanger and towards one of the Santini Air jeeps parked outside. Dom and Caitlin quickly followed after String. They both reached the jeep and were about to get in when String looked at Caitlin. “Dom and I can handle this one. I need you to keep in touch with Ariana to make sure that she is okay and that she doesn’t need anything,” String said as Dom got in the jeep and he started it. Caitlin nodded her head. “Sure thing, String, I’ll keep an eye on Ariana for you. You two be safe,” she said as she stepped back from the jeep as String drove off. **back at the cabin** Ariana was sitting on the stool at the bar after she was done talking to her uncle on the radio. She could tell that she had really scared him when she didn’t answer him at first. She looked down at Ted with tears brimming in her jade colored eyes. “Uncle String really knows how to ruin a girl’s fun,” she said to Ted as she laid her head down on the bar. She sighed as she got up and walked over to one of the bookcases and pulled a book out. She then walked over to one of the chairs and sat down and started reading it. She was so into the book that she didn’t hear the approaching chopper. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
