Prologue
His phone buzzed in his pocket telling him it was time to leave the quiet of the bookstore. He gave a sigh and headed up to the front counter, figuring he had a few spare minutes to buy the book he had in hand. The lady behind the counter smiled when he stepped up, “Morning. How are you today?”He set the book on the counter, “I'm well. You?”“Quite well.” She gave a small laugh as she picked up the book. “You're already done with the other book? You just bought that one two days ago.”He gave a slight shrug, “I'm a fast reader.”The lady gave a laugh and shook her head. She rung up his purchase, “That'll be $10.55, dear.”He felt his pockets for his wallet and came to find it wasn't to be found. “One minute.” He dug around in bag, pulling out a few things as he did. He found it buried at the bottom. He pulled out the amount of money he needed and paid.“Thank you,” the lady said handing him his change and book. He stuffed the other items back into his bag, making sure to put his wallet in his pants pocket. He nodded at the lady, “Have a good day.”“You, too, dear.”He left the store, heading for the subway, quickly becoming lost in his thoughts. This caused him to not hear the voice calling after him. When he near the entrance of the subway, he felt a tap on his shoulder. There stood a slightly out of breath girl, whom, if he had to guess was close to his age. She had long hair that was dyed multiple colors, blue, purple, and teal, that faded into one another. Her eyes were a very dark blue and yet they seemed to shine brightly. She was fit, but curvy. She didn't stand much shorter than him, but enough to notice. He took all this in very quickly and remembered that she had ran after him for a reason. “Can I help you?”“Actually, I'm here to help you,” she replied. He gave her a confused look. She laughed and held out a black case, “I don't think it would be easy for you to get to your office without this.”He laughed as he realized that she was holding his badge. “Um, thank you. I didn't even know I was missing this. I must have dropped it when I was looking for my wallet.” He put it in his bag so as not lose it again. “Thanks again.”“You're welcome.” She said, and then she smiled, “It would suck for one of the good guys not be able to get to work and stop the bad guys.”He laughed, “Yeah, I guess that would.” Her smile grew and she turned to leave. “Hey,” he said before he could stop himself, “will I see you again sometime?”She turned to him, a very happy smile shown on her face “I hope so.” She turned to go again, giving a small wave as she did.He turned and made his was down to the subway station. A smile of his own on his lips. He didn't know what it was, but something about that girl made him tingle. As he made his way through the crowd, he suddenly stopped in his tracks. He gave a defeated sigh as he realized he had no clue what her name was. He checked his watch and saw that he had no time to go back to the store to see if she was there or if the owner may know.He made himself a promise that when he was back from the new case that would work on figuring out that mystery. His smile returned and he resumed his commute to work. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
