CHAPTER 1
‘God this place is beautiful’ I thought to myself, clutching my camera to my chest as I surveyed the lush green landscape before me. I’m in Busse Forest Nature Preserve in Des Plaines, Illinois, on a photography trip with my fellow students from George Mason University. But I’m forgetting my manners. My name is Victoria Rachael Eichhorn. I’m 21 now, born July 2nd, 1993 in Fair Fax, Virginia, a stone’s throw from the Army Navy Club. My Mother and Father are divorced, Dad lives in Alaska now, and Mom still lives in Fair Fax with my 17 year old brother, Adam. I live on the University campus and it’s my 4th and last year. But I’m getting off track.
I jolt out of my inner monologue when one of my classmates hollers for me to catch up. I sigh and limp along; old injury, I’ll explain some other time.
I stop when I notice a picturesque scene with perfect lighting. I hold my camera up, looking through the lens for the perfect angle. I walk forward, again, looking through the lens, not at the ground. Which is why I suddenly fall quickly off the small hill I failed to notice.
After I land roughly on my side, the first thing I check on is my camera; which is luckily caught up in a bush. I can’t say the same for my luck though. I try to move my arm and cry out in pain when it shifts. And I’m angled on top of it, so I can’t see the extent of the damage.
“Marissa, I fell! Come help me!” I call out for my best friend of 13 years, who begrudgingly accompanied me on this trip today only because of my incessant begging. She’s not a big outdoor person.
Marissa trots over “Rachael, I swear to god, I take my eyes off of you for one minute” She mutters as she slides down to me. When she sees me she gets pale. “Rachael, you’re bleeding; a lot”.
“Get Professor Locke and tell him to call 911” I tell her as I try to stop the bleeding with my hoodie. She rushes off and not too much later the EMTs’ are putting me on a stretcher and I don’t need to look at my arm to know it’s broken. The bleeding is attributed to a bone protruding from my forearm and a large gash on my head. Marissa rode in the ambulance with me, shaking her head, used to my clumsiness nut not to this extent.
They take me to Northwest Community Hospital, saying they have a surgeon who excels at repairing damaged nerves. Based on the fact that my ulna is outside of my arm, I’m glad they considered that my nerves could have damage.
I soon find myself in a private area of the Emergency Room, thanks to Marissa’s’ bellyaching about the public area being too loud and crowded. Sometimes her adverse reaction to large groups can come in handy. The doctor came in and looked over my arm.
“Alright Miss Eichhorn, you only needed three stiches in your head and you don’t have a concussion. We’ve stopped the bleeding in your arm but we need to get the swelling down before we can set the bone. It may be a bit of a wait, we’re a bit busy right now”.
“Really?” I queried “Why?”
“We had some shootings recently that the FBI is investigating, so our ER is busier than normal” He looked at my arm again and frowned. “Looks like I need to give you an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant. Your muscles are tensing around the bone” he rambled on while giving me the appropriate shots.
Marissa sighed and stood up “Well, if this is going to be a while, I’m going to get some coffee. You want anything from the Café Rach?” she asked, gathering her bag.
“Sure, an iced tea, but hang out at the Café for a little bit, I’m going to try to take a nap, these meds work fast” I was already starting to nod off.
She chuckled “Sure thing Rach”. I could tell she was eager to call her boyfriend since she had to shut off her phone in the ER.
I drift off almost as soon as she’s gone, internally thanking modern medicine for the ability to staunch pain.
CHAPTER 2
*1 Hour Later*
I’m startled out of a dreamless sleep by flashing red lights and a blaring alarm. I open my eyes slowly, not sure what’s going on. I’m shocked and scared at what I see. A man in tactical assault gear is holding a machine gun to two men with ‘FBI’ on bulletproof vests. I groan quietly ‘Rachael, only you could manage to break your arm and be taken hostage on the same day’ but that’s when I noticed something odd. The man had his back to me, so either he thought I wasn’t a threat or didn’t see me. Either way, big mistake. I begin to formulate a plan.
*Marissa POV*
Marissa Welsh was enjoying her coffee and texting her boyfriend, telling him that Rachael was going to be fine. She was about to take another sip when an alarm went off and red lights started flashing. She didn’t know what was happening so she grabbed her stuff and started running towards the ER to check on Rachael.
A guard stopped her and she growled “What the hell is going on? I have to get to my friend in there!” She fumed.
“Sorry miss. No one allowed in” the guard calmly responded.
“Why the hell not” she roared.
“A gunman has taken the ER hostage. They’re preparing SWAT to go in”.
Marissa’s brain froze and she hoped to god that Rachael wouldn’t do anything stupid…
*Normal POV*
I looked around, seeing most of the other hostages sitting against the main doors. One FBI agent who looked about middle age and had dark brown close cropped hair. The other looked about my age and had curly light brown hair. They were talking to the gunman but I couldn’t hear them. I quickly look around my room for something I can use to create a distraction. I spot my camera tri-pod in the corner. I get up quietly, and as I do, I catch the eyes of the young agent. He’s shaking his head but I know I need to do something to help.
The hospital socks and gown allow me to move quickly and silently. I pick up my tri-pod and raise it over my head with my uninjured arm. I hit him on the back of his head as hard as I can but he doesn’t go down. He spins around and his face is filled with murderous rage. I close my eyes and wait for him to shoot me, asking myself why I thought this was a good idea. But he’s suddenly shoved into me and we fall to the ground. I hear two shots go off and feel a burning pain in my thigh. The gunman struggles and is rolled off of me.
“Reid, I’ve got him you go check on her” the older agent shouts. He cuffs the gunman and moves out of my line of sight with him.
The one deemed ‘Reid’ slides over to me with a cloth in his hand. I hiss as he presses it to the bleeding holes on my right thigh. “That wasn’t very smart” he murmurs “putting yourself in that situation with the UnSub.”
I glare at him “At least tell me your name before you start to insult my intelligence.”
“Dr. Spencer Reid. And stop moving, you lost enough blood as it is!” He readjusts the cloth as a nurse rushes up to us.
“I can take over here Sir” she tried to take the cloth from Reid but he batted her hands away.
“It’s fine I can handle this, go check to see if anyone else needs help” he waved her away “I never got your name.”
“Victoria Rachael Eichhorn. By the way, what are you a doctor of?” I asked, grimacing in pain.
“Well, I have PhDs in Chemistry, Engineering, and Mathematics” he stated matter-of-factly, focusing on my leg.
“Oh, is that all?!” I asked sarcastically “And how old are you?!”
“No, I also have BAs in Psychology and Sociology, and I’m 24” he notices me wincing and goes on “Tell me about yourself, it will help to distract you.”
“I’m a senior at George Mason University in Virginia, born and raised in Fair Fax. I’m studying Psychology.” I glare at my arm and sigh “ I was on a photography trip with some classmates, but I fell and broke my arm, which is how I ended up here” I wince again as he tightens the tourniquet, helps me stand up and get back into the bed. “And you’re obviously a genius, so what’s your IQ? My little brothers’ is 173, so I’m used to geniuses” I sink back into the pillows and sigh.
“Uh, 189, although technically I’m not-“he starts but I cut him off by waving my hand.
“Save it, my brother gives the same ‘I’m not a genius’ speech every time I introduce him to someone new” I grin at his slightly affronted look, but before he can respond the older agent comes back in.
“That was very unwise miss. You could have gotten yourself killed!” I can tell he is livid with anger but I just shrug.
“My Dad was in the Navy. He taught me that if you can do something in a situation that can save others, you do it, regardless of the danger to yourself. I could see that you two were unarmed and that he WAS armed with a fully automatic tech 9. I wanted to help so I did. And you are?”
“Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner. Off the record, thanks for the help. Officially? Never do something like that again” he smiled at me then turned to Agent Reid “Reid, watch over her for a while, the team wants to talk to her and we need to take her formal statement.” Just as he finished speaking, Marissa rushed in and sat down next to my bed.
“Thank God you’re alright” she sighed; then flicked my forehead “What did you do? Was it something stupid? Why is there an FBI Agent by your bed, and WHY IS YOUR LEG BLEEDING?” She flicked me again.
