Ranger Sleepover – Chapter 1 - Riley POV
Ivan still wasn’t accustomed to technology so it was easy to understand why he would still be startled hearing his communicator go off. He was the only one at the table who didn’t reach for their pocket. After regaining his composure at the shock of the sudden, unwelcome sounds, he usually just peeks over to someone else’s communicator when Ms. Morgan calls us. I think he’s worried it might take his soul or something. Even Koda learned to use his communicator, after breaking it half a dozen times, that is. But you can’t really blame Ivan about being cautious after what he’d been through with Fury.
Even though we might not all have been through what Ivan, or Koda, or even Mr. Navarro have, we all still have our own anxieties about being a holder of an energem. Why were we, of all people, chosen? I’ve been trying to analyze it in my head since this whole thing started, but I just can’t figure out what we all have in common. With billions of people on Earth, was it really necessary to pull a few out of time just to compose our team? I know that we bond with them, and Keeper says they chose us, but do these things really have that much power over destiny? From what I’ve observed they seem to bond to the first person who manages to touch them. But if we were meant to bond with them, that means they must have orchestrated a great deal of events in our lives to lead us to them. It’s more than unsettling to think about. It just seems strange to me that after millions of years, so many of us bonded with energems at the same time. I trust Ms. Morgan, and I want to trust Keeper but I just can’t shake the feeling that he hasn’t been entirely honest with us. And it doesn’t help his case that we haven’t exactly had positive encounters with aliens thus far.
“Riley. Are you coming?” called Shelby, standing by the head of the table. The rest of the gang had already left the café after hearing Ms. Morgan’s message.
“Yeah. Sorry. I was just lost in thought. I’ll catch up. I have to lock up the café.” I replied. The pink ranger looked at me for a few seconds, smiled, then turned around and walked away. Ms. Morgan entrusted me with the keys after Tyler lost them, twice. He’s a great leader, and we’re lucky to have him on our team, but he can be thoughtless at times.
The museum had been closed for over an hour but sometimes visitors stay in the café to eat, talk, and relax for a while. I hadn’t seen anyone in over 30 minutes but I had to make sure no one was in the bathrooms before I locked up. I just realized I was completely alone and the paranoia immediately struck. Remember when I said we all have our anxieties about this whole ranger thing? I’m not exactly used to being alone. Growing up I always had my big brother to watch over me. And now I feel like I have a whole family of big brothers. I’ve gotten so used to relying on them that it actually makes me anxious just being apart from them. But there’s more than one reason for that.
I made sure to walk as quickly as possible to the bathrooms so I could get it over with and join the others. As I approached the men’s room, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. That’s been happening a lot lately just before something bad happens. I don’t know if it’s the energem’s doing, or if I’ve developed some kind of premonition abilities, or if it’s just a coincidence, but it’s rarely wrong. I approached the door to the men’s room, extended my arm slowly, morpher at the ready, and pushed the door open as fast as the heavy door allowed me to. I looked inside and saw nothing but a messy bathroom. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding and laughed to myself.
“Looks like Chase “forgot” to clean the bathrooms again.” I said to no one in particular.
Before I could even put my arms back to “non-air quotes” position, the hairs on the back of my neck quickly stood at attention once more. I turned around as fast as I could to see if anyone was there. That was my first mistake. Actually, it was my second. The first was allowing me to be alone. I felt the world spin and quickly fade as a cloud of green smoke filled the air around me. Green? At first I assumed it was something my energem did, but as I fell to the floor and saw several pairs of gray boots, I realized what had really happened. And then I didn’t realize much of anything else, at least not for a while.
-----------------------------------------------------
When I came to, my vision was still blurry but I felt myself laying on a soft, warm surface. I heard nearby, friendly mumbles, and it smelled familiar and comforting. I always assumed if I’d ever find myself in this kind of situation, I’d wake up somewhere uncomfortable. Maybe the bad guys weren’t entirely inconsiderate? That thought quickly faded as my eyes finally caught up to my other senses and I realized where I was. I was lying on the floor, on a big, soft pile composed of animal furs, blankets, rejected clothes, and burger wrappings-Koda’s bed. More like Koda’s nest. I was back in the lab, safe. At least I assumed I was safe. I tried to stand. That was yet another mistake. I really needed to stop making them today. I felt myself sway a few times, and eventually fall over against the rock walls of Koda’s room. I must have made a lot of noise because I heard half a dozen footsteps immediately rushing in my direction.
“It’s Riley!” I heard Tyler’s voice yell out.
The red ranger was the first to enter the room, followed by Koda, Chase, and Ivan who got stuck in the entranceway trying to all enter at once. They struggled to squeeze through for a moment before Koda managed to win, sending Chase and Ivan to the floor face-first. Shelby and Ms. Morgan almost tripped over them but managed to regain their balance before stepping over them like a couple of throw rugs. Koda got to me even before Tyler did. Even when I’m not dazed Koda still looks like a blur when he moves sometimes, but this time it felt like he practically teleported to my side. He began to lift up my head carefully and Tyler joined him a moment later. I had to admit I was in bliss for a moment being cradled by two strong, good-looking guys. It was only made more intense by the fact that I had pretty strong feelings for one of them. Okay fine, I had pretty strong feelings for both of them. Can you blame me?
“Riley, how, feel?” asked Koda, clearly concerned.
“He doesn’t look so good.” Said Chase, as Ivan was helping him off the ground.
“He’s bleeding.” added Ivan.
“What? Where!? Demanded Ms. Morgan. He didn’t seem injured when we inspected him before.”
“It’s his arm.” Answered Tyler, as he moved his hand away from my left arm, covered in what I assumed was my blood.
“It must have happened when he fell over just now.” Said Shelby.
The bliss I was feeling quickly faded as I began to feel the sting of my new injury.
“Ow!” I said aloud, finally.
“Is that true Riley?” asked Ms. Morgan?
“Yeah, I think so.” I replied. “I got up too quickly. I lost my balance and fell hard against the rock walls. It looks worse than it is.”
“You’re bleeding a lot.” Said Tyler, looking intensely into my eyes. I know he’s very overprotective of us all, being our leader, but seeing him staring at me like that, with no concern for how stained his clothes had gotten from my blood—it made him even more adorable. Despite the blood loss, I still had enough to spare to blush apparently.
“It’s a scrape. I’ve had my fair share in my years as a skateboarder.” Added Chase. “He’s just lost some surface skin. He’ll be alright.”
“Can someone tell me what the heck happened?” I interrupted.
“Let’s get you cleaned up first.” Said Tyler. “Then we’ll tell you all about it.”
Tyler and Koda helped me stand and led me out into the main area of the lab.
“Before anything, I’m going to say good night.” Said Shelby. “My Dad is expecting me at home. I don’t want him to worry.”
“After what just happened, we need to stick together now more than ever.” Pleaded Tyler.
“Exactly. It’s not safe for any of us to be alone.” Added Chase.
“She won’t be alone.” Said Ivan. “I will stay with Lady Shelby this evening and guard her.”
“That’s very noble of you Ivan, but I don’t think Shelby’s father will appreciate her bringing a boy home to stay the night.” Argued Ms. Morgan. “Anyways, I’ve already come up with a plan.” Said Ms. Morgan, turning to face Shelby. “I spoke to your father earlier and told him you’d be staying with me tonight to work on a project. He seemed to agree once I told him we’d pass by your house first so you can pick up a few things.”
“Oh.” Said Shelby, surprised. “Sounds fun! I’ve always wanted to see your place.”
“Don’t be silly. We’re not actually going to my apartment.” Said Ms. Morgan. “We’re staying at the palace tonight.”
Shelby’s eyes went wide. “T-the-the p-palace? Like where the royal family lives?!” she asked, in disbelief.
“Yes.” Replied Ms. Morgan. “Prince Phillip can’t leave the castle and we can’t leave him alone tonight in case he is targeted next.”
“Targeted Next?!” I exclaimed, wincing from the pain in my arm. “Can someone please tell me what is going on.” Everyone stared at me with sympathetic looks for a moment. Ms. Morgan walked up to me and held my hand in hers, which was very uncharacteristic of the usually stoic scientist. Whatever happened must have shaken even her. We rely on Ms. Morgan’s cool head and maturity a lot, but I think we forget that she’s a person too, and she’s really not much older than the rest of us. After a moment, she squeezed my hand reassuringly and let go before saying “The guys will fill you in. Shelby is coming with me but we can’t leave the lab alone either, so you all will be staying here tonight.”
“What about my Dad?” asked Tyler, panic in his voice. “He’s completely alone!”
“That’s not true.” Said Ms. Morgan. “Keeper took the Zords and left a while ago to go meet with Mr. Navarro. They should be together now. They can look after one another. They’ll be safe, especially with help from the Zords.”
“As usual, it looks like you’ve thought of everything Kendall—I mean, Ms. Morgan.” Said Chase, nervously.
“Well someone has to.” She replied, glaring at him. “Let’s go Shelby. We’re already late.” She said, grabbing Shelby by the arm and pulling her towards the exit.
“B-bye Guys!” said Shelby, waving to us with her free arm. “Stay safe!” Shelby made eye contact with me and gave me a wink before turning away. Being the only other logic-minded people in the group, I grew pretty close to the girls when I first arrived. I guess you could say Shelby was even my closest friend now. Naturally, that meant she knew all my secrets. There was a lot of intelligence in that wink she gave me, and I knew what she meant by it. It meant that she understood, probably before I did, that I was about to spend the night with the four most beautiful guys I’d ever known.
“You, safe, too!” yelled Koda, who looked like he was tearing up. Ivan came up beside him and put his arm around his shoulder. “Do not distress, Sir Koda. I am confident the ladies will return safely.”
After Shelby and Ms. Morgan left, Ivan, Koda, Chase, and Tyler immediately turned to me. They were all wearing a look of concern and it was aimed right at me. Since becoming a ranger, my mind has been filled with more thoughts than I care to process. You would think they’d be mostly about how the fate of the world is resting on my shoulders, or how my loved ones could be targeted, or even how cool it is that I’m suddenly a superhero, but those things only make up for about 10% of my thoughts. The other 90% is standing right in front of me. I’ve had crushes before. I know the difference between crushes and love. I know the difference between the love you have for a family member, a friend, or a lover. That’s why I knew that there was something unique about how I felt for these guys. Being in love wasn’t what surprised me. I just didn’t know that it was possible to be in love with more than one person at a time. I don’t know what to call it. I don’t know how it happened or if it has anything to do with the energems, our bonds as rangers, or just our bonds as people fighting for their lives together every day. All I knew was that I was in love with four guys, and that I was in trouble, because tonight, I had them all to myself. As they stared at me, I felt myself blushing once again. Hopefully the blood dripping down my arm would be enough to distract them from my face. I looked down at it. A small pool of blood had formed on the ground next to my feet. Despite all the blood loss, I’m sure I was still blushing hard. At least I was sure until Ivan broke the silence.
“Your face is as pale as that of a specter Sir Riley.” Pale? I thought to myself. Well, that’s good. Wait, no it wasn’t. Before I could make up my mind, the world began to spin again. I wasn’t sure if I was standing, falling, or already on the floor. After I moment, I could feel that I wasn’t standing, but it didn’t feel like I was on the floor. My vision had gone again but it was brief this time. When it came back, I realized that I did indeed fall, but I never even came close to reaching the ground. I looked up to see Chase staring back at me, his face inches from mine.
“Don’t worry, mate.” He said. “I’ve got you.” He sure did.
“Let’s get him to the bathroom so he can get cleaned up.” Said Tyler.
“I help!” volunteered Koda.
“We need to get him out of those clothes.” Added Ivan.
That time I was sure I blushed! Chase turned to me with a goofy smile and said “Looking better already.”
I managed to smile back. Even that managed to hurt a little. I knew I was in for an intense night, one way or another. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and swallowed hard.
