“Adina, please! We were just talking!” The rogue angel, Daniel, pleaded with his partner to put away her weapon. They’d all been seated around the campfire, surrounded by painted Enochian sigils, when Adina had come out of the trees with her angel blade drawn.
“Hannah, no! What are you doing?” Cas practically groaned.
She’d drawn her own angel blade, escalating the situation. In an instant, everything was out of control. Hannah charged at Adina, Castiel rushed to defend Hannah, and Daniel leapt to attack Cas.
“Son of a bitch.” With a blink, Dean summoned a sigil of his own. It hung shimmering in the air as he slashed his knife across his palm and then struck it, spattering droplets of blood to activate it. All four angels were instantly banished, but the genie reached out with his magic as they were flung back, catching Castiel, Daniel, and Adina. Dean let the two rogues drop to the ground while taking care to lower his Master gently.
“Dean…” Cas’s voice was weak, his blue eyes dazed from the banishment. Dazzling blue-white light spilled from a slash across his chest, and Dean cursed again when he saw that he’d been wounded in the brief fight.
“It’s okay, Cas. Hang on, I’ve got you--” Kneeling beside him, Dean blinked to heal his wound, and would have restored his grace, but Castiel shook his head.
“I’m all right now.” He sat up, shaking his head to clear it and looking around the campsite. “What did you do?”
Dean growled in sheer frustration as Cas cut off his magic. He couldn’t do a thing to his Master without his consent. Why the hell was Cas being so damned stubborn? Did he want to die? “You,” he snarled at Adina, taking out his anger and worry on the rogue angel as she staggered to her feet. “You want to stay on earth? Experience humanity and emotions and sing Kum-Bah-Yah? Fine. But you’ll do it as humans.”
A blink as Adina stumbled across the campsite and dropped down by Daniel’s side, and the angels’ wings disappeared. Daniel stood, assisted by Adina, and stared at Dean. “We’re human?”
“Yeah, you’re human. Keep your heads down and your noses clean and Heaven won’t have any reason to come after you,” Dean said gruffly. “Now get the hell out of here. No, wait, you know what? Never mind. I got this.” He crossed his arms, blinked, and the pair disappeared.
“Dean. What have you done? Where is Hannah?”
Dean pursed his lips, a faraway look in his eyes as he thought about it. “Oh, about five minutes out. And she’s pissed,” he grinned.
“She won’t accept your solution to the problem of the rogues,” Castiel sighed.
“Won’t she?” Dean took a moment to embellish the campsite with scorched angel silhouettes, black and broken wings sprawled across the ground. “They resisted. We had no choice but to take them out,” he said sadly, all innocence.
“It just might work.” Cas sat down in a camp chair. A few minutes later the crunch of dry leaves in the underbrush signalled Hannah’s return. As Dean had predicted, she looked furious, leaves tangled in her hair and mud splashed up to the knees of her jeans, but she seemed mollified by the evidence that the rogues were dead.
“I still don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to return to Heaven. And how is it that I was the only one banished?”
“Adina must have triggered something when she went after you. Some sort of offensive attack.” Castiel’s wide blue eyes were innocence personified, but Dean felt a little shiver of guilt slip through the bond that the angel insisted on keeping so tightly shut down.
He coughed lightly, hiding a chuckle. Yes, the Winchesters were a bad influence on Castiel. One Winchester in particular. He sat down and stretched his feet out toward the campfire as Hannah led Castiel a short distance away, out of earshot, or so she thought. Dean didn’t feel any guilt at using his powers to eavesdrop.
“Hannah, these emotions you’re experiencing, they’re the influence of your vessel. They’re human emotions, not your own.”
“I know. When Caroline saw her husband, I could feel her love for him. But Castiel, these feelings I have… You’re wrong. They’re not all because of being here on this earth. When I look at you I feel--”
Jealousy surged through Dean at Hannah’s words, but Castiel cut her off.
“I understand, Hannah.” There was a long pause. “I’m not trying to be cruel. I feel that emotion, too...But I feel it for another.”
“It hurts.” There was resolve in Hannah’s voice as she said, “These things are not meant for angels. And my vessel… I could feel her longing for her old life. It’s time I allowed her to return to it. It’s time I returned to Heaven.”
Dean was still puzzling over what he’d just heard when Cas returned to the campsite, leading Hannah’s vessel, Caroline.
“This is Dean Winchester, Mrs. Johnson. He’s a good man. He’ll get you safely back to your husband.”
“Sure thing.” Dean folded his arms, preparing to work his magic, but Castiel put a hand on his arm, stopping him.
“He’ll drive you home.” Castiel spoke to Caroline, but his eyes were locked on Dean’s. “You should be reunited with your family in just a few hours.”
“Is that an order, ‘Master’?” Cas was preventing him from accessing the bond between them, but Dean hurled his frustration and anxiety at the barrier anyway. Cas was dying. Why was he wasting time sending the genie who could save him on some pointless errand? “You’ll have to say ‘I wish’,” he taunted.
“Please, Dean. I’m asking. As a favor, for a friend.”
“Uh-huh.” His tone was still heavy with sarcasm, but Dean couldn’t resist the pull of Castiel’s need. “Fine. I’ll drive her home. But what about you? What about your grace?”
“I’ve realized I have one more mission I must fulfill. I’ll get in touch soon.”
Damn Cas, playing the friend card. He should make him use up a wish, but there was too much history between them. Too much loyalty and affection for Dean to even try using genie trickery. He glared at his reluctant Master. “You’d damn well better.”
