Chapter 4
Jack stared at Nadine and
the Stargate for a little longer. “Alright…
I can fix this!”
“Really?” Nadine
sounded doubtful. “I can’t wait to hear
your dazzling plan.”
“We brought plenty of
supplies with us. More then enough to
right the gate and get outta here.”
“Yes, well, Colonel, in
case you haven’t noticed,” Nadine gestured around herself. “Our supplies, are
gone.”
“Fine!” Jack had
finally gotten frustrated. “If you’re so
smart, YOU figure it out.” Jack stalked
off.
“You know, I don’t think
you helped the situation much.an san style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Daniel
told Nadine as Carter went to retrieve their CO.
“Well, I hate to break it
to you, but I sure as hell didn’t agree to join the SGC to go on field trips to
collect dirt and rocks.”
“It doesn’t matter, you’re
still a part of this team and as team members we’re supposed to help each other.”
“Listen, Dr. Jackson, let’s get one thing
straight here; I am not now, nor will I ever be, a part of your team.” At this, Nadine stalked off in the opposite
direction that Jack did.
“Great,
just great.” Daniel commented aloud.
“I do not see how this
situation is ‘great’, DanielJackson.”
Teal’c responded.
~*~
Nadine walked as far away
as she could from the rest of SG-1, which wasn’t far, considering they were
basically on top of a flat cliff.
Something none of them had really noticed before.
Sitting on the rocky
ledge, she stared down at the distant ground.
Then, something caught her
eye.
Getting up, she followed
along the cliff edge as quickly as she could without toppling over.
~*~
&nDaniel was staring at the
facedown gate, wracking his brain to come up with something. Teal’c had
wandered off to see if he could find something to help lift the gate.
“Daniel.” Nadine’s voice brought Daniel out of his
reverie. He looked over at her
approaching figure.
“What supplies do you
think we need to get the hell out of here?”
She asked.
“Well, I’ve been thinking
about that, and I came up with a simple solution. All we need to do is dial out. When the wormhole opens, it’ll create a
pocket in the ground. All we have to do
is dig a hole next to the gate that we can crawl through so we can get in the
opening, then we jump through the open wormhole. It’ll be a rough landing, but it’ll work. Only problem is, this ground is too rocky and
hard to dig through with our hands and I don’t think there’s anything around
that could be of much use.”
“So, we need a shovel.” She answered the question herself.
“Yeah.”
“Was there one in the
supplies with brought with us?”
“Yes, there was.”
“Great, then let’s get ourselves the hell out of here.”
“What?” Daniel asked a little confused.
“I found the supplies.”
“That’s… great!” Where are they?” He asked, sounding much more optimistic.
“Over
the side oe cle cliff.”
Daniel’s face fell.
“Don’t worry, I can get
them. I just need you to cover for me so
Jack, Teal’c and Sam don’t know where I am.”
“No.” Daniel told her.
“Yes, because if we tell
them, one: Jack will want to do it, two: Teal’c will insist he goes because
Jack wouldn’t be able to do it. Neither
of which would work considering there’s just been a major earthquake and I
doubt very much that any of the rocks could hold their weight. Then Sam will volunteer, which will get Jack
saying he’ll do it, once again. And I
really would like to just get out of here.”
“Fine, but as soon as you
reach the bottom, I’m going to tell Jack where you are.”
“Deal.”
Nadine and Daniel shook
hands.
~*~
“Nuh-uh. I’ve changed my mind.” Daniel interjected. “There is no way you’re climbing down that without at least a safety rope.”
“Daniel, we don’t have any rope. It’s down there.” Nadine pointed over the edge.
Daniel was about to say
something else when Nadine sniffed the air.
“What’s that smell?”
Daniel smelt the air and
his face paled. “Hydrogen
Sulfide. We have to get off this
planet.”
Nadine nodded before
lowering herself over the edge.
“Be careful.” Daniel told her before she started to climb
down.
That’s where the rest of
SG-1 found Daniel a few minutes later.
“Daniel, we have got to
get out of here.” Carter told him.
“I know.” Daniel responded, his eyes on the cliff edge.
“And why is that Carter?” Jack
asked.
&;“Hydrogen
Sulfide, sir.” At Jack’s blank look, she continued. “High levels of it can cause death within
just a few breaths, unconsciousness after the first or second. Even after just this little bit of exposure
we could start suffering from headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, memory
loss, irritability… and that’s just the beginning.”
“That’s bad.” The colonel commented. “Let’s figure a way out of here.”
“Already working on that,”
Daniel told him.
“Excuse me?”
“Nadine found the
supplies, she’s getting a shovel.”
“That would work.” Carter said, realizing Daniel’s idea.
“What?” Jack asked.
~*~
“So, where is Miss Bond?” Jack finally asked, after understanding the
plan.
Daniel pointed at the
cliff edge.
“What?!”
Nadine heard Jack’s voice
from her vantage 2/3’s down the cliff edge.
It had been a lot harder going then she had thought it would be. Most of the only rocks to hold onto were
loose or fell off as soon as she touched them.
“Larkey! Get back up
here now!” She heard Jack call down to her.
“Colonel, I’m almost to
the bottom. This is our only plan; someone has to get the shovel. It might as well be me.” She told him calmly as she continued to climb
down.
Jack let out an irritated
growl before retreating from the cliff edge.
“Keep an eye on her.” He told
Daniel.
~*~
Nadine glanced down. She was nearly close enough to jump down
without hurting herself.
Daniel had been watching
Nadine closely, Carter, Jack, and Teal’c were sitting
on the gate not far away.
“Sir, shouldn’t we try
dialing out?”
