Garcia finds plenty of missing person reports that can possibly be attributed to their case but none of them are definitive enough to be of any use. She does find them a potential lead after a long night though, one that Hotchner has Gideon track down with Spencer in tow. And boy, is it a lead.
The derelict cabin on the outskirts of Emporia looks dark and foreboding at first glance, and an eerie feeling crawls up Spencer's spine as they get out of their borrowed government-appointed SUV to approach it. "I can see why a place like this would appeal to Richard Gecko."
"Isolated and off the grid," Gideon muses as he takes the lead and carefully walks up to the door. It's barely staying on by its hinges, which squeak as he opens it, revealing the main room and the papers that are strewn everywhere. "I guess he was able to resist the temptation of hunting for victims while he was here."
"Whatever he's planning seems to be big," Spencer comments as he picks up some of the papers from the rotting floorboards and leafs through them. They seem to contain details from Seth Gecko's breakout amidst what appears to be scrawled ramblings that he can't quite decipher. "And he's apparently insane."
"You keep looking through these to see if you can find out what he's planning while I secure the rest of the cabin," Gideon orders and motions to the papers scattered about.
"Got it," Spencer responds with a shallow nod then starts to collect the papers. Most are the same incoherent ramblings but some have numbers and time frames scribbled onto them with the letters A.M.B. annotated by them. These are important somehow, and for some reason, the letters themselves seem familiar.
"What did you find, Reid?" Gideon asks as he returns to the main room a couple of minutes later.
"I think they're planning a heist," Spencer says slowly as the pieces start clicking into place. "There's going to be a transfer of thirty million in bearer bonds to Abilene Mutual Bank in Abilene, Texas… That's their target."
"Bring those papers, Reid, I need to call Hotch," Gideon says as he starts pulling out his phone. "No service," he mutters under his breath then starts heading outside.
Spencer blinks then frowns as he looks around the cabin. Isolated and off of the grid. "It's a dead zone, Gideon," he calls out as he follows him outside. "And the transfer is happening-" He looks at his watch, his eyes widening as he takes in the time. "It's happening right now!" He sprints for the SUV as Gideon lets out a low curse.
It takes them several minutes, precious time that is wasted, to leave the cellular dead zone, and Gideon hits dial as soon as they clear it. "They're hitting Abilene Mutual Bank in Texas right now, Hotch," he all but yells into the receiver as soon as Hotchner picks up on the other end. "Thirty million in bearer bonds!"
"Thanks, I'll pass the word along if it's not too late, Gideon. You and Reid get back to the airport so we can try to get ahead of them," Hotchner curtly orders before he hangs up, and Gideon kicks the speed up more than a few notches.
Seth furiously drags his fingers through his hair then turns his head enough to glare at Richie while still keeping an eye on the road. "What the fuck, Richie?! You had one job! One fucking job!"
"I said I was sorry, Seth," Richie whines at him and plays with the damn switchblade he'd been fiddling with in Abilene Mutual Bank when he should have been focusing on the fucking job he had assigned himself. "But we still got the thirty mil."
"Just fucking barely," Seth growls at him and continues to glare at him. "And a fucking hostage! I told you no fucking hostages, Richie! But no, we had to take a fucking hostage because you missed her goddamn phone, which resulted in the fucking Rangers and the police swarming us!"
"I got her fucking phone, Seth!" Richie whines again and closes his hand around the switchblade, and for a moment Seth worries that he might accidentally hurt himself on it. "I didn't know she had another phone!"
"That's why you're supposed to fucking frisk everyone to make sure they don't have a second phone on them!" Seth grits his teeth and fully returns his focus onto the road as Richie starts fiddling with the stupid switchblade again. "Instead you were too busy playing with that damn thing!"
"I wasn't playing with it, Seth!" Richie flips it in his hand, over and over, without even looking at the damn thing, and it's almost like he doesn't realize he's doing it.
"You were! Just like you're doing now! Which is why we have a fucking hostage in our trunk!" A muffled scream punctuates the silence that follows his words, and Seth sneaks a glance at Richie to find him grinning slightly. The sight of that grin pisses Seth off and he reaches a hand out towards Richie. "Gimme that stupid thing!"
"But this is mine, Seth! It's my lucky switchblade!" Richie's voice continues to be whiny, and Seth is tempted to pull over to knock some sense into him. He doesn't. They can't afford it with the fucking Rangers looking for them.
"Give it to me now, Richie," Seth snarls at him and after a long moment, Richie drops it into his waiting palm. He's also tempted to chuck the damn thing out the window but that is sure to make Richie pitch a fit, so he settles for holding on to it for now.
