One of the women handed me a brick and I threw that. A guard's helmet rang like a ship's bell and spun his head around. I could get to like it here. "We need to get out of the courtyard!" Luna ordered.
I looked around, over everyone's heads, trying to find a defensible position. At the same time, I reached down for Luna's tribeswoman. She didn't look like she would be able to walk, much less run to safety.
As soon as I touched her I knew what had been happening to her. I could see the bastard who owned her, a big hulking brute. His shadowed face loomed high in the sky over me. I realized if that giant ever showed up, we were burnt for sure.
Then I got an idea about a friend of hers, an even bigger brute. Three times as big as I was, throwing boulders around, waving a spear that looked like mine but long enough to poke the moon…
Okay, it took me a second but I did figure it out. I was seeing myself from her eyes. That meant the frightening giant that had tortured her was not all that terrible.
As soon as I thought about him, though, I had an idea. I pointed across the courtyard to the stairs. His apartment was the closest defensible location. Luna led the way.
At the bottom of the stairs I tried to lower Deanna to one of the slave women. She clung to me desperately, like her life depended on it. "Okay," I said, "I'll hold you until the rest are safe but no longer." She squirmed in the crook of my arm like a child and whimpered.
"It's locked!" Luna shouted.
"Stay away!" someone behind the door said. I knew who that was. That was the guy that had raped us. Me. Her. Well, at the moment, I was sort of confused about who was who, but very certain how we felt about her owner. I took the stairs in two steps and jammed my spear into the door. The center plank shattered, twisting the metal crosspieces. The door stayed in the frame, the locking bar bent but still there.
Oh, and someone died on the end of my spear. I shook his body clear and turned around. Guards from the estate were organizing themselves with members of the city watch. The last two slave women scurried up the stairs and they all dodged through the broken door.
Luna stood just inside the hole, weapon ready. She could keep them from entering for a while, hopefully long enough for her tribe to rescue her. I peeled Deanna off of us and shoved her through the hole. She screamed but I got her off.
Then I turned back to the courtyard. Some big guy without armor was shouting about a slave uprising and his son's safety. I ripped a rock out of the stair railing and tossed it. He ducked but the guy behind him went down.
I counted quickly. Sort of. I can do math, but not while I'm fighting. There were hand, hand and hand of men coming at me. I was just the teensiest bit out numbered.
Still, every one I killed wasn't going to hurt Luna. I readied my spear and moved to the bottom of the stairs.
The whole world did the flashy thing. I found myself running across the cargo bay, weapon leveled at a very surprised looking Riker. I just managed to stab the wall instead.
"Thanks," he said, staring at the shaft where it wobbled. It was about a finger's length from his head.
"No, thank you." I turned around. No one was with me. "Where is everyone!?" I shouted.
He winced and covered his ears, then staggered to the wall. "Transporter Room, report!"
"Ro says we got everyone, sir. Crusher is… The Doctor has taken the Counselor to sick bay."
"They're okay," he told me, then ran out. I found that if I closed my eyes, I knew where Deanna was. Luna held her hand as they carried her through the ship.
-----
Hours later I was curled up on the floor. Luna was curled up in my arms. We both woke when the door hissed open. Deanna walked in, looking a little odd. She was wearing a short robe and no shoes. I hardly ever saw bare feet in the Fleet people.
She walked a little unsteadily over to where we lay. I sat up, Luna stood. "I don't feel her," I said.
"She's drugged," Luna replied. Deanna's arms extended and she walked into my arms. As soon as we touched she melted against us. We sighed. I felt safe again, in our arms. Luna looked at us oddly. We scooted into the corner. I seated me on one leg and held my arm out for Luna to sit on our other leg.
That's how Geordi found us. He spoke softly into his communicator, "Troi's with Da'an, Commander." Riker and Crusher appeared soon afterwards. They walked slowly over to us.
I gave me a hug and spoke softly. "I'm having a bit of a struggle recovering from the recent trauma."
They blinked at me, eyes wide. "I believe I'm fixating on the Kellezian, partly because he was present at the rescue. More importantly, he seems to have a latent telepathic ability that complements Betazed empathy quite efficiently.
"Beverly, if you could give Da'an a small dose of theragen derivative, that should attenuate his telepathy and wean me off of him gently."
"I'll, uh…" The woman's eyes darted from me to me and back again. "I'll consult with Doctor Selar. As a Vulcan, she's better at telepathic issues that I am." We nodded. She left.
Will stepped closer. I didn't open my eyes, but reached straight out to him. He took my hand. Between his love and the great bulk of me, I felt safer than I had in a long, long time. We stood and sat there, waiting for the doctors to return.
----
"That was weird," I was telling Luna the next day. "Flame take me, that was weird."
"I guess it would be," she said. I could see her expression in the mirror. I kept looking at my face, half expecting to find Deanna's looking back instead. "And there're no tales of telepathy in your people?"
"I'd have to ask Lore, but I don't-"
The door opened and Picard walked in.
“You'll both want to know, we've contacted the families of all the women you recovered from Chaffa Tela Four. They're looking forward to being reunited."
"Good," I said. Luna nodded but didn't look happy.
"Yes, well. We'll have you home in a couple of days, Da'an. We're not in as much of a hurry so-"
"So you're not taxing the warp engines by exceeding normal operational speeds," I said with a nod. He smiled.
"Just so," he said. He glanced at Luna then stepped closer to me. "So, there's a question I've been wanting to ask you for a while, sir."
"Of course, Captain." I put down the mirror and scooted to face him fully. "How can I help you?"
"It's about Luna, and her disposition," he said. I felt a chill. We'd discussed her fate and her remaining penal sentence, but weren't sure if Picard was going to be able to swing a pardon.
"What about it, sir?"
"Well. All my bridge officers are wondering. What does one typically bring to a wedding on your planet?"
