Dr. Brennan was secretly happy that Booth had called with an urgent case. This Thanksgiving the prison would only let Amy and the girls visit with Max and Russ. She hadn't told anyone. Pity was such a wasteful emotion.
At least now she had something interesting to do, and she enjoyed the idea of getting her hands dirty by doing the initial work herself. But not so much dirty as sticky. A skeleton was encased in a layer of flaky, barely translucent purple crystal that seemed to stick to everything. It all sat on the wire mesh above the autopsy table. Temperance chipped off a piece. It smelled familiar.Booth's voice startled her before she could take a deeper whiff. "What do we have, Bones?""Booth? Shouldn't you be with Parker?""No, I have him for Christmas this year," he explained while nearly jumping up the steps and looking over the victim. She was still too surprised to say anything as he rubbed a bit of loose crystal between his bare finger and thumb. His nose immediately wrinkled and he half gagged, "Oh man, what is this stuff?""I don't know yet, but it seems to be water soluble so it should come off easily. I'll have Hodges test it when he gets in on Monday. Unless I solve the case by then.""I'm glad to see that having to work on Thanksgiving hasn't affected your modesty.""I'm not alone. I have you," she mumbled."What was that?"She pulled out the hose and started washing the stuff off. "Put on an apron and gloves. I need you to rub while I rinse it. It'll dissolve faster that way."Booth complied and started sloshing water around its skull, quickly washing away the crud. But then he suddenly pointed at the chest. "Whoa! What's that?"Brennan looked to where he pointed. "I don't see anything..."Booth took the hose from her and started rinsing around the lower chest."Wait Booth! We need to work from one end so the weight doesn't snap anything!""Trust me," he said without even looking up at her.She let out a small huff and took the hose back, but she kept working where he'd pointed. As soon as the lower rib were uncovered Booth suddenly grabbed the inside of the hole and started pulling hard. She yanked the hose away and used her free hand to grab his wrist. "Booth! You're going to break the..."A large chunk snapped off in his hand and he pulled it away, revealing that the inside of the odd casing was hollow. "See? I told you to trust me," he gloated.Temperance could do nothing but give it a bemused look for several seconds, but then she grabbed a flashlight. She was about to lean in when Booth broke off another large chunk. It pulled away from the ribs without doing any damage and let the bright overhead lights shine inside. Her jaw dropped. The inside of the skeleton was filled with apples, oranges, bananas, nuts, and all sorts of other traditional Thanksgiving snacks."Good thing we didn't put the cheese and crackers in there too," Hodges' voice called out from behind.Bones turned so fast that her body took a second to catch up with her head. Standing at the bottom of the stairs were Hodgins, Angela, Cam and Cam's adopted daughter Michelle. With her wide smile shining bright, Angela gave her a half wave and said, "Happy Thanksgiving!""You guys..." Brennan half whimpered, and she suddenly felt her water in her eyes. But she was sure it was from using the hose. While giving a quick wipe with her sleeve she turned back to Booth and stared in disbelief. He put his hands on her shoulders. "You honestly didn't think I wouldn't find out you had nowhere to go, did you? I am an FBI agent after all."By then the others had climbed the stairs and were picking at the unconventional cornucopia. Cam reached into the chest cavity and pulled out a an apple, which she didn't hesitate to take a big crunchy bite out of. The incredulous Dr. Brennan watched. Michelle scrunched her nose and hesitated for a moment, but then she too reached in for a bag of mixed nuts.Hodges popped a fig in his mouth and then rapped on the body's breastbone while explaining, "I knew you'd spot a plastic skeleton in an nanosecond, even if it was encased in layers of dried sucrose, corn syrup, purple food coloring, and artificial flavor. So Wendell helped me make this guy about a month ago.""It took us almost every night for the past week to cover him in grape lollipop," Angela chimed in. "We're just glad you didn't look underneath and see that the bottom was open.""And just in case you're wondering," Cam cut in, "that's a brand-new wire rack. Michelle and I came in early to fill him up and get everything else ready.""Okay, I don't know about you guys," Angela interrupted, "But I'm ready to eat."As the others headed to the conference room Dr. Brennan grabbed Booth's arm. "Thank you," she said softly. He cleared his throat. "Well, it wasn't just me. Everyone else did all the work. Really, I just called you and then picked up the turkey dinner at the supermarket...""No," she said before leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. Her face lingered in front of his for a moment. "I mean it. This is the first Thanksgiving when I actually felt truly thankful."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
