Sympathy for the Devil

Summary:
The final battle happened but it didn't go as planned or how it was prophesied for centuries; Lucifer won, defeating Michael and sending him back to Heaven, almost dead. Now humanity's worst nightmare has come true; Earth is ruled by Lucifer and his demons. But, despite what the Son of the Morning thinks, things never go as planned when the Winchester brothers are involved. Not to mention some scheming from a heavenly faction that he's unaware of throwing all kinds of things into the works to gum them up.

Chapter 1
As heads is tails, just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me, have some courtesy
Have some sympathy and some taste
Use all your well-learned politics
Or I'll lay your soul to waste

Sitting in the comfortable chair in the massive TV room of the opulent mansion in Las Vegas that was their gilded prison, Dean couldn't bring himself to look at the TV and see the massive destruction that was going on around the world though, with the volume up as Bobby and Cas watched, he couldn't help but hear it. Just listening to what was going on around the world made more guilt curdle in his stomach. They had failed, spectacularly. That was the only way to put it. Despite all they had gone through, what they had done, sacrifices made, Lucifer now ruled the world. Shaking his head as the reporters talked about the massive fallout from the biggest earthquake to ever ravage Europe, the oldest Winchester brother just muttered, “This sucks,” more to himself than anyone else. In his life, he had never felt so helpless as he did right now and there was no way for him to fix it. And he blamed himself for allowing Sam to take on that foolish plan. It had been his hope that, one way or another, Lucifer would go down, but it hadn't happened.
Though not happy that Sam was willing to sacrifice himself to end the mess that Dean felt he had started, he had agreed, seeing it as the only option they had left to put an end to the nightmare. It was also something that he wasn't sure would work but it was the last shot in the barrel and they had to take it. It hadn't worked, in fact the words complete and utter disaster came to mind when describing the events of that day. The battle had taken place, as predicted for so many centuries, in the Stull Cemetery just outside Lawrence, Kansas. He had been there, hoping his presence would be enough to give Sammy the strength to override that evil bastard and take control enough that he could jump into the cage or, at the very least, if that couldn't happen, his brother wouldn't be alone when he died. It hadn't worked that way though. Cas and Bobby had also shown, fighting to the end, something that had cost them their lives. Michael, of course, was present and accounted for. Cas had managed to banish him for a while in hopes of giving Sam the time he needed to take control over the powerful archangel but it hadn't happened. With a snap of his fingers, Cas had exploded into pieces. Bobby had shot the evil son of a bitch but Lucifer had shrugged it off, snapping his neck. He, himself, had taken a hell of a beating at the hands of the evil fallen archangel and that was the one moment it seemed that Sam had surfaced but, somehow, Lucifer had managed to suppress Sammy once more. Then Micheal had once more shown up and the battle was on. As anyone could predict, he had a ringside seat at the most spectacular battle ever waged. He had, because it was predicted by so many for so long, expected to watch his brother die at the hands of Michael and, for the longest time, it looked as though that's what was going to happen, Lucifer taking a beating from his brother. But, towards the end, something happened, what it was he didn't know to this day. Lucifer had rallied somehow, drawing strength then fighting back more fiercely than before, beating on Michael badly. In fact, Dean was sure that the heavenly faction had no chance of winning after that. Michael must have known it too from the look on his/Adam's face, but, just before Lucifer was about to deliver the killing blow to what looked like the other mortally wounded archangel, he backed off then banished his brother back to heaven. There was a dead silence for a long time after that where Dean held his breath, hoping against hope, that Michael, Raphael, someone would show up to finish Lucifer off. But it hadn't happened. Lucifer had won. Smug beyond reason, Lucifer had let out a whoop of joy, grinning evilly, then summoned his most trustworthy minions to his side. For some reason, Dean was sure Sam had something to do with it, Lucifer healed him before resurrecting Bobby and Cas. Then they were whisked away to the opulent mansion in Sin City where Lucifer took up residence. They had been here for the past six months while the world went to shit around them. Slowly, but surely, the demons were taking control of everything bit by bit and chaos reigned supreme. And the three of them were stuck here, not able to do a damned thing. Officially, they were prisoners, they all knew that, not able to leave the place. They had tried, several times, including covert escape attempts but all were thwarted. But it was strange... instead of beatings, death, torture, whatever, they were just dragged back then put in their rooms once more, nothing other than that. Sure, security was strengthened but that was all. When they asked all that was said it was Lucifer's orders, nothing more than that. Crowley, their 'handler', something Dean learned was humiliation and punishment for his trying to thwart Lucifer's plans, was certain that was just temporary as a way for Lucifer to play with him before he was killed, had said the orders, indeed, were directly from the head big, bad and nasty himself, stating they were to be kept comfortable and not to be injured in any way. The only thing the older Winchester brother could think of what it had something to do with Sam. Maybe his little brother was doing the best he could to keep those he cared about safe. At least that was the only thing Dean could think of. Bobby and Cas too had echoed his sentiment. Something in that made him feel good and hopeful that Sammy was alright but he wasn't going to count on it either. Being the vessel of Lucifer had to be a nasty gig that dealt in things Dean didn't even want to think about. But Cas had told him that Sammy wouldn't degenerate like Nick had as Sam was Lucifer's true vessel. Dean was grateful for that but he didn't even want to contemplate how bad things were for his brother or what he had to experience being ridden by that evil son of a bitch. He just hoped, if there was an out to this mess, that Sam wouldn't be too fucked in the head before it was all said and done. Again, he wasn't going to count on it and was sure, if Lucifer did finally go the way of the dodo, that Sam would be a brain damaged, gibbering mess that would need constant care for the rest of his life. Since being in this damned place, Dean had only seen his brother/Lucifer a couple times in passing. That was all though. No words had been exchanged, nothing. The only thing that even acknowledged his presence was the Prince of Lies throwing him a wicked evil smirk that looked completely out of place on his brother's handsome face. But there had been no more than that. To him, Sam had looked fine, not falling apart as Nick had after being ridden for so long, something that was a relief, but Dean still felt like shit knowing what was controlling his brother. In the end though, he was relieved to know that Sam was safe and doing as well as could be expected. He guessed that was about it as good as it was going to get on that end of things. All he could hope was that they could pull something out of their ass and find a way out of this damn nightmare but he wasn't counting on that either.Lying in the huge, comfortable bed on the top floor of the mansion Lucifer occupied, Sam was reluctant to open his eyes. Though it was late in the afternoon, something he could tell from the brightness of the light that shone through his eyelids, it was just the start of the day for him, well, the part of his body that wasn't controlled by Lucifer. But he wasn't ready to open his eyes to start it either. Sure, he knew 'his other half' knew he was up but he couldn't face it yet. Opening his eyes meant that he had to look in the mirrors that covered every inch of the walls and ceiling of the room. In doing that, he would see Lucifer. Well, not exactly Lucifer, more like what he knew as the image of Lucifer; that of his last vessel, Nick. That was, right now, something he couldn't handle yet. Each day since allowing himself to be possessed it became harder and harder to face the day and Lucifer. Giving an internal sigh, he wished he could go back to sleep for a couple weeks straight and not have to deal with what was going on but that wasn't going to happen.
The realism of the situation was that he was still Sam, very much so, but with another being living in his body. He could see, smell, hear, touch, feel, etc. just like he always had. It was just that Lucifer was in charge of everything now. Some of this he knew from talks with Cas in the past about his vessel then with Jimmy when Cas was gone but things were slightly different with Lucifer. Because of the sheer power contained in the archangel, things got slightly more complicated than they were for Cas. Yes, Lucifer could control everything, no matter what Sam did, but the more Sam cooperated and kept the body healthy, the more powerful Lucifer remained. Again, the archangel could, indeed, function just fine without Sam's cooperation but he didn't want to. It seemed that Morningstar wanted to keep his vessel in tip top shape at all times to maximize his power so that meant that Sam was to do all he normally did, like eat, exercise and all that. But, strangely, along with that came things like keeping the Sam part of the body happy. As it turned out, the more content Sam was, the more powerful the vessel was, something Lucifer wanted to maintain. To that end, the fallen angel made sure Sam stayed that way by ensuring he had things that were pleasing and activities he liked. Though it was odd, because there were two souls in the one body, they could do two things at once as long as it didn't involve complex movement. Usually, it consisted of Sam watching TV, using the computer or playing video games while Lucifer strategized, held meetings, went over what was going on, etc. For Sam, it was something that helped him keep his sanity, being able to focus on things besides the horror that was going on around him. The first few months, listening to and seeing what was going on, Sam was sick and sure that he was going to lose his mind but, going about things this way, he could at least deal with it. It wasn't the greatest and he felt like hell over all of it but he could deal. Giving an internal shake of his head, once more Sam mentally berated himself for what was now going on. It was his fault, all of it. The plan had been a sound one and had almost succeeded at one point, when Lucifer had been beating on Dean, but the minute Michael had shown back up, Lucifer had seized all control, shoving Sam as far back as possible though he had fought the best he could to overpower the fallen angel then dump them both in the cage. He hadn't had another chance after that during the fight. It wasn't until it looked as though the prediction that Michael would win was going to come to pass that things changed. When Lucifer was down and almost out, he proposed a deal with Sam to give him the edge he would need to win. For Sam's cooperation and throwing himself fully in with the fallen angel, Lucifer would bring back Bobby and Cas, heal Dean then make sure that the three of them were protected, kept safe and unharmed. Though Sam had been more than willing to die to end the thing and rid the world of the evil that walked it, he had said yes. Dean meant more to him than anything in the world. Bobby and Cas were also as close as family to him. He couldn't just let them die like that. So, after some debate and quick negotiations, he had thrown himself fully behind Lucifer with the caveat that Michael was to live. It had been his thought that it would buy time for him to either take back the body and toss them in the cage or for Michael to recoup then come back for the second round. Either way, it was a chance to stop what was going on. Of course, Lucifer had won and the real nightmare had started. Since then, Sam had regretted that choice every waking minute though Lucifer had kept his word to him. If it wasn't for the fact that the whole world was being overrun with demons and Lucifer pulling the strings, life, really, wouldn't have been bad. Sam, as he found out quickly, wasn't abused, shoved back or tortured by the fallen angel. Because it gave Lucifer more power, he was actually treated quite well. Nor did Lucifer lose his temper with him when they argued. In fact, if he had to compare the relationship to something, Lucifer treated him like a lover of some kind, being gentle and soothing when he was upset. It was a strange thing that he didn't know how to deal with, honestly. But it didn't help with the guilt and other feelings he was dealing with. More than anything right now, he just wanted to die. Each day was a struggle to keep going no matter how easy Lucifer had made life for him. He spent most of his time just hoping that he would go to sleep and never wake up since he knew that there was no chance to even attempt to commit suicide, that would be stopped before he could even try it. The worst part was that Lucifer could hears his thoughts, including these, and would try to fix things and make him happy, something that made it to where he felt invaded more than the mere possession made him feel. There was also no shielding them from the extra soul he hosted. But, really, he didn't care what Lucifer knew anymore, he had pretty much just given up, wanting to never leave the room and waste away to nothing. Wallowing, Sam was pulled out of it by a soft sound that was, in all realism, in his head but sounded like it was being spoken in his ear and a hand stroking down his abs in a gentle way. With a deep, dejected sigh, he knew that he was going to be forced out of his wallowing and into the world by the other being that inhabited his body. Refusing to open his eyes and look in the mirrors, he just stiffened and curled up more tightly, feeling morose. “Open your eyes and look at me, Sam,” Lucifer whispered to his vessel, pressing tighter to him, holding him close, well what passed as that anyway. Knowing by now that he couldn't ignore the fallen angel long, Sam didn't have the strength to fight him so he opened his eyes and looked in the mirrored wall that was facing the bed. There, as usual, he could see the other being inside him. Lucifer was curled up to his back, arm draped over his midsection, holding him, head resting against his. Though Sam didn't know how Lucifer did it, that was something that the archangel refused to explain since it would probably give him an advantage and way to get him out of his body, he could feel himself being held closely as the other soul in his body tried to soothe him. This happened a lot anymore with how upset he was. He imagined that it had to do with Lucifer losing power if he sank into a deep depression but wasn't sure. The knowing thoughts only worked on Lucifer's end of things, not Sam's, so he was generally clueless as to what the fallen angel thought most times. Lifting his eyes, he looked into Lucifer's in the mirror and waited to see what would come next.
A.N.- A couple notes: I will be explaining later on how and why Lucifer can touch Sam. I'm not just pulling it out of thin air, I promise! Second; the mirror thing was used in the series so I'm going with that and will use it to do what I need to. I know it's strange but it will make sense as time goes on.
