“Father?” the meek question came from the crouching figure.
“That would be me,” Liam nodded. “It's okay.”
Sam seemed very unsure of what was going on. “Is this normal?”
Liam shrugged. “This is my first, I know about as much as you do.”
“Sammy?” they heard Dean call out.
“We're in here,” Sam called back.
The crouched figure cautiously moved a little closer. Liam noticed the name Jack painted on the nursery wall. “Jack? That's what your mother named you, right?”
Dean entered the room and immediately fired at Jack. “No!” Sam grabbed his brother's arm just before Jack let out a high pitched scream that sent vibrations through the room.
Next thing any of them knew they were on their backs in the yard. “What was that?” Dean blinked as he sat up.
“You doing a really stupid thing and scaring the kid,” Liam grumbled.
“That was...?” Dean tried to wrap his mind around it. “Is that normal?”
The blond sighed. “Like I told Sam, I don't know. Usually Nephilim come into the world as infants and grow quickly, but an archangel has never sired one before. Only Lucifer would.”
“If he's already full grown does that mean he has wings?”
“Are you not listening? I don't know. What I do know is we need to find him. Let's hope he doesn't have wings, because that will make it a lot harder.”
They got into the car and started driving around looking for some kind of sign. “We still have holy oil, right?” Dean asked.
“Depends on why you're asking,” Liam answered.
“We’re gonna have to hit him with everything we got.”
“Hold on a second,” Sam seemed to be somewhat on Liam's side. “Can we just talk about what happened back there?”
Dean shook his head. “Sure. Which part? Let’s see. Crowley’s dead, Kelly’s dead, Cas is... Mom’s gone, and apparently, the devil’s kid hit puberty in thirty seconds flat. Oh, and almost killed us.”
“Yeah, because you tried to shoot him,” Sam pointed out.
“Shooting at beings tends to scare them, you dumb fuck,” Liam growled. “Sam and I had things fairly well under control until you charged in. You said you were going to trust me. What happened to that?”
“Do I need to reiterate everything I just said?” Dean argued. “Things changed.”
“And if you don't pull your head out of your ass, a lot more things will change.”
“We're spun out too,” Sam joined the argument. “But you did promise to give the man you love a little faith. We both promised him that. Let's find the kid and take a moment to evaluate, okay?”
“Fine,” Dean gave in. “I'll give you a chance to work your magic. Sam's right, I did promise you before everything went to hell, quite literally.”
“Thank you,” Liam crossed his arms and relaxed in the back seat.
“It's not that I don't have any faith in you,” Dean felt the need to add. “It's just... This is Lucifer's kid we're dealing with. After everything we've been through with Lucifer...”
“Understandable,” Sam nodded. “But we can't just change how we do things.”
“We can't become the British Men of Letters,” Liam added.
Dean sighed. “Okay, so you make an excellent point.”
Liam saw a Pirate Pete's restaurant coming up. “Pull over here.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “You think he walked this far and then suddenly had an urge for curly fries?”
“No idea, just following the energy trail.”
Dean pulled into the parking lot and parked. “Just make it quick.”
“You're not coming?” Sam asked as he and Liam started to get out of the car.
“I’m gonna call Jody, check in, see if she can’t help us put a nationwide APB out on the creepy satanic nudist. Even if he was here, if he has wings, he could be anywhere now.”
“I give you leeway because I know you, but you're on thin ice, dude,” Liam grumbled.
Sam and Liam walked inside where a young man probably in his late teens was behind the cash register, and was dealing with a woman who appeared to be drunk. “Welcome to Pirate Pete’s Jolly Treats. ARGH. How can I help you?” the cashier greeted them.
“He wants fries. We all want fries,” the woman kept it up.
“Ignore her. She’s drunk off her ass,” the cashier seemed fed up.
“Right. Okay, we're looking for a guy. He’s about your height. Uh...naked,” Sam awkwardly tried to describe Jack.
“You and me both, sister,” the drunk woman giggled.
“You need to leave,” Liam growled at her. “I mean it.”
“Yes, sir!” she laughed again and stumbled out.
“The guy you're looking for, I think he was here,” the cashier answered them. “Not too long ago. Because he wasn't wearing any clothes we called Sheriff Barker to come pick him up.”
“Awesome, thank you,” Sam pulled out his phone. “Do you have the sheriff's number?”
They moved out into the dining room so Sam could make the call. “North Cove Sheriff’s Department. Barker speaking,” the sheriff answered.
“This is Agent Berry. I’m with the FBI. I’m calling because, uh, did you happen to pick up a kid earlier today, uh, not exactly dressed?”
“Uh, yeah. He’s here at the station.”
“He is? Great, that’s great. Uh, okay, hold on to him. Don’t release him until I get there, all right?”
“Holy...”
“Something wrong?”
“Uh, that’s something we should talk about in person.”
“Okay, we'll be there as soon as we can.”
When they headed back to the car Dean was leaning against the driver's side door talking to the drunk girl. Sam noticed Dean's knuckles were bleeding. “Dude, what did you do to your hand?”
“Don’t ask. He’s super sensitive,” the drunk woman chuckled.
“I meant it when I told you to get the fuck out of here,” Liam growled. “You and any friends of yours.”
“You got anything?” Dean asked.
“Yeah, we....” Sam started to answer.
“We found him,” Liam cut him off, causing Sam to give him an odd look.
“Good, let's go,” Dean got back in the driver's seat, only seeming to care about finding the kid.
When they reached the police station they heard screaming and shattering glass. Jack was running down the hall looking freaked out, though he stopped when he saw Dean and Liam. “It's gonna be okay,” Liam tried to assure the kid.
Jack suddenly fell when Sam tasered him from behind. “Nice shot,” Dean complimented his brother.
Liam crossed his arms with a raised eyebrow. “Was that really necessary?”
Sam motioned to all the broken glass. “Little bit.”
The sheriff then came out with her gun drawn. “What the hell is going on here?”
“I can explain, I think,” Dean said as they raised their hands to show that they weren't armed.
The sheriff sent Jack, Sam, and Liam to sit in a cell when Dean sat with her at her desk and did his best to explain. Jack crouched in a corner, still acting very wary.
“You're okay. We're not gonna hurt you,” Sam tried to keep Jack calm.
“You already hurt me,” Jack pointed out.
Sam sighed. “Yes, I did. I'm sorry. I was just trying to slow you down. You were, uh... Are you all right?”
Jack seemed to relax a little. “I was scared, and when I get scared, things happen. I can't stop them.”
“Why were you scared?” Liam asked.
“Because of the voices. They were so loud, so angry.”
“Do you hear them now?”
“No.” Jack moved to sit on one of the cots. “Will you tell them that I'm sorry?”
“Of course,” Sam nodded. “Jack, how are you, um... How are we talking right now? I mean, not even a day old. How do you speak English?” Sam seemed more curious than afraid.
“My mother taught me.”
“So you talked to her.”
“I was her.”
“Okay. And your powers. Did she teach you those, too?”
Jack got up and moved to the wall, running his fingertips over the concrete blocks. “No, I don't know why these things happen. It's like I'm me, but not me.”
“I can empathize with that,” Liam commented.
“You can?” Jack seemed both surprised and intrigued.
“Yeah, when you have powers, you aren't born knowing how to control them. It is a very long story, but I have powers I had to learn to control.”
“Jack, look, before you were born, you opened up a door to another world. Do you remember that?” Sam asked.
“Yes.”
“Could you do that again?”
“I need to find Castiel.”
“Castiel?” Liam repeated the name. “Why him?”
“My mother, she said Castiel, he would keep me safe. She said the world was a dangerous place. That's why I couldn't be a baby or a child. That's why I had to grow up fast. That's why I chose him to be my father. Where is he?”
“After all... Okay...” Liam sighed.
“You,” there was a sudden glimmer of recognition in Jack's eyes. “You spoke to me.”
“So you do remember?”
“I do. You told me I had a choice.” He walked right up to Liam and stood in front of him. “You said I was created for something bad, that my sire had bad intentions, but I didn't have to go along with it. I could be better.”
“And that's still true.”
“And then Castiel kept me safe for you. Do you know where he is?”
“He's dead,” Sam broke the news.
Dean came in while Jack was trying to process. “All right, we're good to go.”
“Really?” Sam was a little surprised by that.
“Yeah, the Sheriff... I gave her the talk. She's gonna need a minute, but she's cool.”
They heard screaming in the squad room and Dean and Liam ran to go see what was happening. The drunk girl was holding the sheriff's son with an angel blade to his throat. “Hey, Dean,” she chuckled and winked at him.
The sheriff raised her gun. “Oh no-”
Dean made her lower her weapon. “That won't do jack against her.”
“He's not wrong,” the angel laughed.
“Let him go,” Dean demanded.
“Okay. If she shoots you. I don't know what he's told you. I mean, I can guess. Some line about how he and his brother save the world. So macho. But really, he's not a hero. He's Becky.”
“Becky? The roommate Becky?” Dean seemed very offended.
Liam stepped in front of Dean. “Look, bitch, I don't know anything about any Becky, but I told you to get lost, and I meant it.”
“You're the drunk abusive step dad. I'd tell Barney Fife to shoot you too, but that would just make matters worse for us.”
“Pissing me off in general makes matters worse for you. I don't know why you haven't figured that out by now. The boy is mine.”
“Or not,” she smirked as they could all hear Jack scream in distress.
“Bitch!” Liam held up his hand and there was an intense flash of light and a deafening boom.
When Dean could finally see straight he saw Liam passed out on the floor and gooey green puddle where the angel had stood. “I hate it when he does that,” Dean grumbled as he checked to make sure his partner was okay.
“You really weren't telling me a tale,” the sheriff almost seemed shocked. “Was that magic or something?”
“Or something,” Dean sighed. “He's a really long story. A long and kind of scary story.”
Sam and Jack came out to see what had happened. “I had a feeling,” Sam commented when he saw Liam out cold. “Two angels attacked us, and then they were liquefied.”
“Is he dead now, too?” Jack asked, looking a little sad.
“No,” Dean answered. “Sometimes using his powers makes him really tired. He's sleeping.”
Jack took a seat in a nearby chair trying to process it all. “Those people, they were trying to hurt me. He killed them.”
“He did,” Dean nodded. “Because they were trying to hurt us. He was protecting us.”
“Like my mother said Castiel would.”
“A lot like that, yeah,” Sam said. “He really can teach you how to control your powers, and protect you.” Sam gave his brother a look to silently ask if Liam was all right and Dean confirmed.
“I guess we should um...” Dean grabbed his keys and glanced at the door before picking Liam up and slinging the unconscious man over his shoulder.
“Yeah, you should probably go before any more trouble walks in,” the sheriff agreed. She still seemed shaken by everything she just heard and saw. “Is your friend really gonna be okay?”
“My husband will need a few days of rest and pampering, and then he'll be driving us all crazy again. Come on, Jack. You should come with us.”
“Are you softening to the idea of keeping him around?” Sam found that surprising.
Dean sighed as he headed to the car. “I don't know. I did promise Liam I'd trust him. And now you're on team Jack, so... At least if he comes back to the bunker with us we can keep an eye on him.”
They drove back to the house and started building a pyre for Castiel. Liam was awake but still weak, so he sat and answered some of Jack's questions.
“Hey, you, uh, sure about this, Dean?” Sam asked his brother. “I mean, it's Cas, you know? Maybe we can bring him back.”
Dean shook his head. “No, we can't.”
“Chuck did. Uh, God did. Remember that? So maybe, I don't know, maybe if we prayed to him or-”
“You don't think I've tried that?” Dean snapped. “God's not listening. He doesn't give a damn.”
Liam took Jack to the bedroom to say goodbye to his mother. “In this life, my mother died bringing me to this world. We have that in common.”
“What do you remember about her?” Jack asked as he laid his hand on Kelly's foot.
“Honestly? Nothing. I came into this world like every other soul. Over time the barrier between my physical self and my soul has broken down, but back then, I was normal baby who remembers nothing. That is where we differ.”
Sam and Dean wrapped both bodies up to burn and Dean started pouring the gas on them. “You wanna say anything?” Sam asked Jack.
“What do you say?”
“You say thank you. And you say you're sorry. You hope they're somewhere without sadness or pain. You hope they're somewhere better. You say goodbye.”
Dean finished and pulled out his lighter. “Well, goodbye, Cas. Goodbye, Kelly. Goodbye, Crowley. Goodbye, Mom.”
“Dean, we don't know if Mom-” Sam started to argue.
“Yeah, we do. We do, Sam. Lucifer killed her the moment he realized we trapped his ass. He killed her. You know he did. She's gone. They're all gone.” He lit the pyre and stepped back.
Liam moved to stand beside him and wrapped an arm around him. “I love you,” the blond said as he leaned against his partner.
“As out of my mind as I am for it, I love you too,” Dean hugged his partner tight while holding back the tears.
