Chapter Three: Honor, Sin and Investigations
“What?” Tim asked, stunned beyond belief. “We need you to arrest him and hold him until we get there.” Gibbs snapped. “How long?” Tim asked. “Half an hour. Don’t make a move for twenty minutes. Just make sure you can get him down.” Gibbs answered. “He knows my fighting style boss; he could kill me in a flat minute.” Tim answered. “So fight dirty McGee. We will be there soon.” Gibbs went to hang up, but Tim cut in. “Boss, there is a group of people here. Getting this done will be difficult.” “Then get him alone or do it during a demonstration. You have a brain McGee, use it.” Gibbs hung up the phone before Tim could answer again. Closing his cell phone, Tim became aware of someone watching him. Tim turned to see Razu. “Problems?” he asked. “No, just being asked back to work early. I need to report in at about three. But I can help for the next hour.” Tim put on a slightly dark look, but Razu simply ignored it. “We will be teaching staff and sword to these guys. I know that they are a little... modernized, but it is a start.” He led the way back to the training building. A little while later “Now that you know how to grip your sword, we will demonstrate how to use it in a fight,” Razu explained. He had been doing this all day, using McGee as a punching bag for the demonstrations. But Tim had noticed that he wasn’t pulling his punches as much. Just before they started, Tim’s eyes ran over the students and the count was short. “Aren’t we short someone?” McGee asked. “I believe he went to the men’s room. He will be back.” Razu answered. Both he and Tim got into their ready positions. Tim quickly glanced at his watch. The team would be here in less than five, so now was the time to make his move. Razu jumped forward in an offensive move. McGee parried and countered straight away, but Razu was fast and deflected. “I suppose the time has come McGee,” Razu said in a low whisper. “Have I taught you well enough to surpass me? You can’t arrest me otherwise.” McGee raised an eyebrow in determination. “Let’s find out.” He stepped forward and feigned to one side, but Razu wasn’t fooled. All of McGee’s attacks were blocked. “What is going on?” Tony asked from outside, looking in to see Razu and Tim battling it out. “I didn’t know he was that good with a sword.” Ziva said in surprise. “We didn’t know a lot about McGee.” Gibbs answered. “Let’s see how he goes.” Tim kept his offense up, but Razu seemed to predict all his moves. But it was evident Tim had learned well, as he left little room to counter or launch his own attack back at him. This deadlock swapped suddenly as Tim stepped back to see what Razu would do. Razu waited for a moment and then started his assault, but Tim, who had been plotting the moves Razu would make, acted. As Razu brought his sword down to strike, Tim blocked, but then let the force of the attack follow through. Stepping forward he grabbed the end of the wooden sword, pivoted and his elbow met with Razu’s ribs, hard. Razu, stunned and winded, couldn’t block the elbow that struck him in the head. Seeing stars, his grip on his sword loosened and Tim snatched it. With both swords he struck Razu’s temples and then tripped him. “I think I have this one,” Tim said, stepping on Razu’s arm, holding one sword to his chest and held one up, ready to strike. “NCIS, everybody freeze.” Gibbs called, stepping in and pointing his gun at Razu. “Nice work McGee,” Ziva said. “Nice to know that you are a good fighter.” “Thanks Ziva.” McGee answered with a smile as he lowered his swords. Tony moved forward and rolled Razu over, slapping the cuffs on. “Come on birdie boy, let’s go for a walk,” he said. “Wait Tony. Razu, where is the other member of the group?” McGee asked. “In the forest, collecting the drugs he paid for.” Razu said in defeat, sounding hazy and unsure. “I’ll find him,” Ziva said. “I’ll go with you,” Gibbs said. “Tony, McGee; get these people out of here and get ready to leave.” Later at NCIS, Director’s Office There was a major air of concern in Jenny’s mind. She had just been in VTAC talking with Agent Fornell who had been asked to investigate McGee and his involvement with Red Phoenix. Jenny had done her best to try and talk them down, but she couldn’t do it. Therefore, she decided that she would be overseeing the investigation of her agent, to which she was fully entitled to do. She knew point blank that McGee would never do drugs, either selling or taking, and that the FBI was simply looking for an excuse to come nosing around as they always did. Her intercom buzzed, bringing her back to earth. Pressing the button, she waited for her receptionist to speak. “Director? Agents McGee and Gibbs here to see you.” Sasha’s voice was a little nervous, suggesting she had probably given away the game before they even walked in. Well, to Gibbs at least. “Send them in and keep everything else on hold.” Jenny instructed. “Right away ma’am.” A moment later the door opened and in came Giibs, followed closely by McGee. “Have a seat gentlemen. There are a few things arising from your most recent case that are moving out of my control.” As Gibbs and McGee sat down, Jenny turned her attention to Tim. “First off Agent McGee, I must impress upon you what a mess you have caused in the past few days. Assaulting a member of staff who is your superior and leaving your team short-handed. Following that, we now have a new problem.” She looked over at Jethro for a moment before bringing her attention back to him. “The FBI is launching an investigation into your activities at the Red Phoenix Dojo. According to their instant findings, you have been going there for several years and have paid well in advance. Now while this sort of training is usually admired by people in my position, the FBI wants to make sure that there is nothing to tie you to Red Phoenix. Now, I will be overseeing the investigation, but I am not capable of steering its course. I need you to tell me here and now if you knew about Razu and his dealings.” McGee had displayed surprise for a moment, but now was as good a time as any to let his cat out of the bag. “I can honestly say that I have not known of Razu’s dealings at the dojo until I was called by Agent David today.” “Good!” Jenny said in her usual tone. “Then we have nothing to worry about. Now, I want you to go down to Autopsy and get Ducky to give you a blood test. This is a screening for drugs and cover-ups. If you have had drugs in the past 48 hours, they will turn up.” “I understand,” McGee said. “So do I,” Gibbs answered. “And do I have to ask who is spearheading this investigation?” “If you had to, then you would have a problem.” Jenny smiled lightly. “Now McGee, when you are finished, I want you to report back to me.” “Yes Ma’am.” McGee said. He stood up and walked out the door and shut it behind him. “Do you need to put him through this?” Gibbs asked. “I don’t want to and I don’t have a choice. The FBI is just being cautious. And when McGee returns here, I am going to talk to him about all events that have transpired in the last 48 hours. But in the meantime, you can bring me up to speed.” Autopsy lab “Well McGee, you leave a mess in your wake and come back with even more,” Ducky said as he took the blood from McGee’s arm. “How are you managing this?” “Well Ducky, I have been wondering that myself. Tony was a pretty straight forward answer. He annoyed me enough and it built up. It was going to happen one day, but in this instance, I guess it was pretty poor timing. As for the rest, all I can guess is that I am a victim of circumstance. But this blood test and my statement and records should clear me.” “No doubt about that. If you’re doing drugs, my mother’s flying around the chimney for her evening exercise,” Ducky said with a smile. McGee smiled back. It was a cute thought to see a woman who was bordering a century flapping her arms and zooming overhead for some exercise. “Thanks for the laugh Ducky,” McGee said as Ducky wiped the injection mark and applied a Band-Aid. “My pleasure. I must say though that I wanted to ask you about your training out there.” Ducky replied as he wrote on the side of the test tube. “What for?” McGee asked. “I’ll tell you why when you tell me why,” Ducky answered with one of his smiles. “Well, it will have to be some other time. The Director has asked me to report back to her when I was done here.” “Ah, very well. You and Palmer can go together. He needs to take your blood to Abbey.” Ducky signed the evidence clipboard and passed it to Jimmy, who took it and the blood vial and went towards the door, McGee right behind them. “So, learning fighting in your spare time?” Jimmy asked, a tad nervous. “Well, not fighting, martial arts. Fighting is something done between two people. Martial Arts is self-defence and confidence building.” The elevator arrived with a ding and they both stepped in. Jimmy seemed edgy still. McGee could guess his thoughts. “Jimmy, I’m still me. I was a part of NCIS computer teams when I started doing Kung Fu, not the other way around. Just relax.” “Okay,” Jimmy answered. The elevator dinged and McGee patted Jimmy reassuringly on the back as he left. Jimmy turned and smiled as the doors shut. As McGee walked towards the Director’s office, he looked down at his team’s desks. Ziva and Tony were talking quietly at Tony’s desk. Ziva looked up briefly and spotted him and it seemed to kill the conversation. Clearly it was about him. What aspect, he wasn’t sure. Ziva’s impassive face revealed nothing. As he stepped back into the Director’s office and took a seat, he let himself become relaxed. He knew this investigation was merely a technicality. “So Agent McGee, how are you?” Jenny asked. “I am fine Director.” Tim answered. “I’m pleased. Now what I am going to do before FBI arrive is do a swap of information. Between the time you left here Monday morning to the apprehension of Razu, I want to know all of your movements and everything that went on at the dojo. I am also going to read you into the investigation. I have no doubt in my mind that you are clear of this, and that the FBI is just being thorough. However, at the same time, I don’t want to find hitches in the road that I will have no explanation for later. So let’s begin.” Downstairs “What Ziva? I apologised on the trip home and he accepted. What more do you want?” Tony asked as he took a few chips out of the bag on his desk. “I want you to talk about it with him. Your apology was half-hearted and more out of achieving a working relationship with him. He wants to be a friend of yours, and one that is not the butt of your humour. Don’t you get it?” Ziva looked up at that moment and saw McGee walking towards the Directors office. “He needs our support because he is now the prime target of the FBI. Why does this mean so little to you?” “I care about him Ziva, but that doesn’t mean I have to be the one to fix things. If he wants things fixed, he’ll come to me.” Ziva went to protest again, but Tony held up a hand. “If it makes you feel any better, I will talk to him, but only when this is cleared up first. If you want to mediate, that’s fine. But until then, it is business as usual.” “Then why don’t the two of you get on with it?’ Gibbs asked, walking past with a coffee in one hand and a kaf-pow in the other. Ziva walked over to her desk and sat down. She took up her pen and started writing out her report. Abbey’s Lab “Hello Gibbs,” Abbey called as Gibbs walked in. “Nice work Abbey, how did you know?” He got the answer to his question as Abbey pointed to a mirror on her desk angled at the door. “You’re here for McGee’s test results, but I have nothing for you. But what I do have is what you want to put the Red Bird away for a while.” Abbey wheeled herself over to the other computer and started typing. “I found more than enough of his finger prints on the packets of drugs to say he at least handled them given the position of the prints, I can safely say he also had something to do with packaging them. But here is the strange thing. One of the drugs has been modified. It isn’t inhaled as the drug is supposed to be. It is a powder to be absorbed through the skin.” “I want you to search all of McGee’s clothing. That powder is going to show up somewhere.” Gibbs pointed to all of McGee’s things on her table. “What makes you think so?” Abbey asked. “Because Razu would have known who McGee was and would have made sure to drag him down. Start with the clothes he was wearing today and work backwards. He may have only left enough to affect his bloodstream but not him.” Gibbs handed her the Kaf-pow and turned to leave. “McGee is going to be alright isn’t he?” Abbey asked. “He will be, just as long as you can prove it if he was set up.” That Night “McGee, you have been cleared of all involvement.” Agent Fornell explained. “The drugs found in your system were proven to be that of a powder planted on you and absorbed through the skin. You’re very lucky. If Razu had wanted to kill you, he could have.” He put out his hand to McGee, who took it and shook it. “But you live to work with NCIS another day. Until then, McGee, Gibbs, Director, I will see you again soon.” With that, Fornell walked out of the door to the director’s office and towards the exit. McGee and Gibbs turned back to the Director. “Well done gentlemen. We have found and arrested a killer, drug dealer and saved one of our own. I think you owe Abbey Agent McGee.” Jenny said. “But I had no doubt that you would do fine.” “Thank you director, and I intend to thank everyone, but for now, I have been asked to drinks with Ziva, and have accepted. Is there anything else for tonight?” “I don’t think so McGee. You can go.” Jenny said, and Gibbs nodded. “See you tomorrow then,” McGee said with a smile and a nod. “Goodnight.” He walked out of the office. “He certainly does owe us a little, but we owe him more.” Gibbs explained. “You think so?” Jenny asked. “Well, you probably don’t. But there seems to have been a number of issues arise in my team. But I am going to leave it to them to sort out.” Gibbs explained. “I hope they can work it out, because I don’t want to have to separate my best team. Mediate the situation and make sure the kids play nicely.” Jenny walked over to a side cabinet. “Drink?” “Thanks,” Gibbs answered. Jenny poured two glasses of whisky and offered one to Jethro. “I suppose McGee needs to be considered more often for positions in field work. Should I borrow him now and again for solo missions?” “I think he can do it. But I want to know that you are doing it this time. I don’t care about the mission; just make sure I know it is happening.” Jethro held up his glass. “Agreed,” Jenny said. She clinked her glass with his and they both took a deep draught of their drinks. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
