A/N: I had a lot of trouble with this chapter, simply because I didn’t want to wirte out a full fight scene and keep the other things I had to do in as well. So I have written only part of it to a full narrative, but condensed another part of it. I hope it is satisfactory. This chapter is dedicated to everyone who has read my story so far, but most specifically Ryan, my first reviewer. Thanks for your review Ryan and agreeing with my present approach. I hope what will happen next isn’t a disappointment.
Chapter Five: Showdown at NCIS In the changing room, Tony and Tim got ready. Gibbs, with a begrudged smile, agreed to referee the match. Ziva, with silent amusement, followed them down to the Gym. Tony put on his training gear of a red vest and black shorts. Tying his shoes, he gloated about the many things he would have McGee do when he mopped the floor with Tim’s sorry face. Tim ignored him as he took out his own vest with a green dragon printed on it and black track pants. The vest was his favorite and he wore it today for luck. As he and Tony walked out to the mats in the Gym, Gibbs went over the rules. Just as he finished, Abbey, Ducky and Jimmy walked in to watch the match. “This ought to be amusing,” Ducky said to the others as he arrived. “A contest to find out who really is the tougher of the two men. I brought my medical kit just in case. You never know with these things.” “I think this is going to end badly for someone,” Jimmy put in, looking at Tony and Tim stretch and warm up. “I think this is going to be fun,” Abbey said with a smile. She wasn’t sure who she wanted to win because she had loyalties to both of them, but whoever won was going to be as happy as she was. “Let’s get things moving,” Gibbs said. He stood between Tony and Tim. “Shake hands!” Tim put his hand forward and Tony took it and shook it. “Right, let’s begin. Round one.” He let out a low blow in his whistle, and Tony jumped from side to side like a boxer, his guard up. His plan was to out-move McGee and knock him down in his confusion. Tim just put up his guard and opened his stance. After a moment, Tim moved forward with a kick, but Tony dodged it and went to hit Tim, but his attack was blocked and Tim countered. Tony blocked back, and the exchange happened again. Finally, Tim left himself a vulnerable spot and Tony went for it. Catching Tim off guard, Tony managed to get Tim off his balance and knocked him over. Gibbs blew his whistle, indicating the end of the match and the point to Tony. “Not such a bright idea, was it Probie?” Tony asked. “That was only round one,” Tim replied. “First to five.” “Get ready,” Gibbs called. “Round two.” He blew on his whistle again and this time, Tim moved quickly. He threw a punch that Tony blocked, but before Tony could react, Tim stepped forward and caught the blocking arm and twisted it. Kicking out at Tony’s knees, he was brought to the ground with an arm twisted behind his back. Tony went to throw a punch with his free hand, but Tim stepped onto Tony’s back and forced him down. Gibbs blew his whistle and the round was over. “One all,” Gibbs called. Returning to their positions, Tony and Tim reset their stances, and Gibbs began the third round. Tony took to the offensive and threw punches at Tim. Tim caught each one and twisted Tony’s arm outward but before he could go for an attack, Tony threw another punch. Knowing Tony was trying to force him backwards off the mat, he had to find a way out. Waiting, Tony threw another punch, but this time he caught the fist and then locked the arm. Tony threw another punch but Tim manipulated Tony’s arm to act as a shield. Moving one of his arms, Tim twisted and locked Tony’s arm behind his back again. Tony tried to get out, but Tim held him by the one arm and Tony couldn’t go anywhere. After a few moments, Tim manipulated the arm again and threw Tony to the mats. “Scores are two to one in McGee’s favor.” Gibbs called. “Impressive,” Abbey said. “Agreed,” Ziva commented. “The number of times McGee could have broken Tony’s arm in just that throw are almost uncountable,” Jimmy mumbled. “But Tim knows how to avoid that,” Ducky assured him. By this point the two boys had resumed their stances and Gibbs blew his whistle. Tony threw a punch, which was deflected. But Tony had decided that he had enough of losing, and kicked out at Tim’s knees. Hitting home, Tony kicked out at Tim’s side and sent him sprawling to the ground. “Two all.” Gibbs called. The fight had continued for a while, each of them getting the upper hand and then losing it until now where the scores were even at four. “This is it,” Abbey said. “God, it is too close to call,” Ducky muttered. “Enough from the peanut gallery, let’s finish this,” Gibbs said. Tony and Tim, both sporting some nice bruises, took up their stances for the last fight. Gibbs paused for an extra moment then blew his whistle. Tony took to the offensive first. Kicks and punches at Tim to ensure that he couldn’t get a hit in. Tim deflected most attacks but a few hit home. But he was determined to win. Finally, he found his chance. Tony did a round house kick which was aimed at his head. Tim caught it and held it. Tony tried to pull back but Tim held him. Tony couldn’t kick out or hit McGee. “Oh crap,” Tony muttered. “Game over,” Tim muttered before moving forward and using the force on Tony’s upheld leg to push him over. He then pushed the leg towards Tony’s fallen body to the point where the stretch was too painful for Tony. Gibbs blew his whistle and the massed crowd of agents, as well as Ducky, Abbey and Jimmy applauded. Tim let Tony go and stepped to one side. He extended a hand to help Tony up. Tony took his hand and stood, looking defeated and sorry for himself. “Where and when?” Tony asked. “Friday night at my apartment, twenty to midnight. Your 24 hours begins at midnight on our day off.” Tony put his hands on his face and shook his head. “A deal is a deal. I’ll be there,” he said through his hands. “Well done McGee. Go and get changed, we need to have a talk.” Gibbs said as he patted Tim on the back and walked out. “Yes boss,” Tim called. Later, NCIS Board Room Gibbs sat with two cups of coffee, waiting patiently for McGee to arrive. He knew what he had to ask, since McGee was a valuable and, frankly, irreplaceable member of his team. But for him to remain that way, he had to be sure of Tim’s motives and abilities. It didn’t surprise him to know Tim had more training than he led on, nor did it escape his knowledge of Tim’s attraction towards men. It wasn’t these things that fazed Gibbs; it was what McGee was doing in covering these things up until now. Sipping his coffee, Gibbs recalled the few minor points in his life where, despite his own hiding it, he had rare attractions to men as well. But he never let his mind sit on it for long. Gibbs definitely preferred women. Four marriages should be enough to prove that. There was a knock at the door and Gibbs looked up to see McGee standing there, dressed in his usual work clothes. “Come in McGee, and shut the door. Wanna talk to you privately.” Gibbs indicated the seat at the end of the table where a cup of coffee sat. “Thank you boss,” Tim answered as he took his seat and sipped his coffee. Gibbs had to be a listed coffee connoisseur, or had a long memory for people’s taste in coffee. Tim never really thought about it until now on how Gibbs always knew how he had his coffee. “Well McGee, we need to talk about you and who you seem to be becoming.” Gibbs was being gentle on the subject, knowing he should let McGee tell his story rather than lead him into it. “I suppose I do owe a few explanations,” Tim began. “I think you do too. Let’s start with your true knowledge on fighting. Why didn’t you share it with us?” Gibbs asked. “Because I thought that if I did I’d be pushed beyond my means to be a better field agent and then booted because I couldn’t keep up. I have used what I know about fighting in the field, just not obviously,” McGee explained. “I know. Up until now, I have simply excused it as your second wind or subconscious kick-in. But now I can’t.” Gibbs looked Tim in the eye with that gaze that could hold any man or make him recoil in fear. Usually Tim would stutter and look anywhere but at him, but this time was different. Tim was neither intimidated nor backing off. “Do you really think I’d kick you off my team if you didn’t perform to what I thought was your standards?” Gibbs asked. “I know it sounds stupid, but it tied in with other fears, and I just decided to keep it quiet.” McGee answered. “And what are these fears?” Gibbs questioned. “Do I have to answer that one?” McGee asked. “No, but I think now is as good of a time as any, don’t you?” Gibbs offered. “I suppose so. Back when I first started working for you and wasn’t sure what to make of who you were, mixed in with Tony’s bullying, I decided that it would be better to keep my sexuality quiet. But now that I know you a bit better, I have to say that I’m bisexual, and that on and off throughout the years, I’ve been lightly attracted to your... personality.” Tim finished, the first signs of his shy personality coming through. “Thought as much,” Gibbs muttered offhandedly before sipping his coffee. “Excuse me?” McGee asked. “I had a hunch, like most things, that you might have been bisexual, but it has never been my place to discuss it with you because it isn’t my business. I knew you’d tell me when you were ready.” Gibbs looked at McGee with what could only be described as a fatherly understanding for a child’s frustrated or upset emotion. There was a long pause between them “Well thank you for understanding boss,” McGee said at length. “One more thing,” Gibbs said before McGee could move to leave. “I know you might be settling a few scores around here with Tony and Abbey, but just make sure that this doesn’t blow up in your face. I want you and Abbey to work out the problems you have before we have to go into a case where you two have to work together. As for Tony, well, I am curious to see where this goes.” Gibbs stood up to indicate they were finished. “I’ll talk with Abbey soon boss. And as for Tony, well, you’ll have to wait and see.” McGee put on a cheeky smile that Gibbs returned. That evening, Abbey’s lab The email form McGee had been just as brief as the one she had sent him. Be in your office at 6. That wasn’t a good sign. She hoped he didn’t want to tell her off more than what he had. She was sure she had been a good friend to McGee all this time, dating or not, but it seemed that their friendship wasn’t as strong as either of them had thought or hoped. Sitting inside her fridge was a bunch of flowers she had purchased for him. She knew what he liked, and it wasn’t black roses. He preferred violets. It seemed to match his personality before, but now it didn’t seem to be quite the same line up. Especially after seeing him kick Tony around the mats today, she had to say she was impressed. The number of times he could have broken something of Tony’s but didn’t, was amazing. So she had taken a wild leap into the world of flowers and added some tiger lilies to represent strength and courage. Her clock said that it was two minutes to six, so McGee was on his way. What would she say? She felt bad, but at the same time had a lot to tell him as well. He had hurt her badly at times too. He was a secret keeper and often didn’t tell her things she should have known. But at the same time, some of it wasn’t her business anyway. A teary lunch break with Gibbs had let her get the worst of it off her chest, because she was too upset to try and confront Tim again. Gibbs said he’d have a word with Tim, but until then she should find a way to make it up to him. She had done that and booked them into a restaurant he loved. She had double-checked his online planner and the note to say he was taking her to dinner had gone. Nothing had appeared in its place so she guessed he was going to be free that evening. The buzzer to her lab door went off and the hiss of it opening brought her attention back to earth. Looking about, Abbey saw no one. “McGee?” she asked. She walked up to the office door and looked in but found nothing there. She turned and looked at the fridge. She had a slight shock when she saw black flowers instead of purple and orange. When she calmed herself, she took them out and had a smell. Sure enough, the black roses were her favourites and real. She opened the card. To Abbey, I’m sorry for snapping at you. McGee “That’s a sucky note,” Abbey said with a smile. “Probably because I am going to say it to you in person,” McGee said form behind her, making her jump again. “McGee... you’re getting sneakier than Gibbs and it is freaky.” Abbey said as she put the roses back in her fridge to keep them alive. Tim put his violets and lilies down and stepped forward and hugged Abbey. “I’m sorry I snapped at you Abbey,” he said. “I’m sorry you felt that you had to just to make me pay attention,” Abbey answered. “But you are still my friend Abbey, and I really do care about you,” Tim continued. “And I am always going to be your friend,” Abbey answered. They let each other go and stepped back. “So are you free Saturday night?” Abbey asked. “No, I have got Tony for Saturday,” Tim answered with a bit of a wicked smile. “That’s right, you do too. Damn, because I booked us into your favourite place to eat for that night,” Abbey said with a sigh. “You don’t like eating there,” McGee answered. “But I’m doing it for you,” Abbey continued. She turned back to her computer and started the logging off process so she could go home. “I know that, which is why I cancelled the reservation for that night and moved it to tonight. I also got you and me tickets to one of your favourite places to go out for next weekend,” Tim explained. Abbey turned around with her jaw hanging down. But her expression turned to curious and suspicious. “How did you know?” she asked. “I got you one back and looked at your online journal,” McGee confessed. “You sneaky little hacker,” she said with a mix of fake frustration and excitement. “Just don’t do it again.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
